Can I

Shoot a duck out of my boat on Big Lake if my motor is killed???

They had two big groups of Bufflehead ducks with lots of Drakes....could of got some good shots of them on the water.....

had one group land 30 yards away from us...about 15 of them

I know tomorrow morning when I go back fishing in the Fog I could smash some birds

Micah 01-08-2012 08:37 PM

Public water...shouldn't be anything wrong with it.

Ray 01-08-2012 08:39 PM

Motor has to be shut down and out of the water.

X 2......that includes trolling motor.

cajun bill 01-08-2012 08:57 PM

I speak from experience. All forward (or backward) motion has to be stopped before you shoot. Cost me $375 for four coots even though my motor was tilted up and out of the water.

So you can't be drifting with wind and shoot? Don't people drift hunt rivers all the time?

Top Dawg 01-08-2012 09:13 PM

Gotta be anchored. The boat has to be connected to the bottom some kind of way. Power pole will work.

flounder_smacker 01-08-2012 09:24 PM

should be able good as long as your stopped and motor 's' out the water. never read of being anchored to the bottom but they might mess with you because your in a bay boat and not a hunting rig.

Top Dawg 01-08-2012 09:28 PM

Reason sink boxes are illegal is because they are suspended and not attatched to the bottom. Call the wlf. They will be able to help you more than us.

huntin fool 01-08-2012 09:36 PM

Just go shoot some and toss your anchor out. Simple as that.

"W" 01-08-2012 09:37 PM

Calledwl@f....motor out water....not power at all to cause boat to move

That's it.....nothing about being anchored

meaux fishing 01-08-2012 09:38 PM

Im pretty sure the law reads something like : you can hunt from a boat as long as the motor is out of the water and all motion as a result from the motor has been stopped

"W" 01-08-2012 09:45 PM

I talked to a warden on the phone...even told him what I wanted to do...

Told him I have been fishing an area in the am and they have had some buffleheads their.... Told him were I was and that not s signal boat has been in that area ..... I said I just want a bufflehead

He said make sure gun is never loaded until motor stopped and out og water .... No method of any kind to held you move...... Etc trolling motor

He was laughing and said...man never has someone this honest or straight about what he wanted.... He said..you want to eat tbem??? I said not really.. I just want one male to mount. .. But I will eat them if I get extra.... He laughed and said good luck... I might go try myself never shot one of those ....and I saw two canvas backs also

Micah 01-08-2012 09:53 PM

No method of any kind to help you move? Does that include wind?

Don't think they will have much wind in the a.m.

I just hope I don't scare the **** out of someone in the fog...its gOing to be loud

cajun bill 01-08-2012 10:01 PM

Out of all the answers, I think Meaux Fishing is the most accurate. When I went to court, the judge ruled that although my motor was out of the water, my forward motion (as a result of my motor propulsion just prior to me pulling my motor up) had not stopped. I argued that while that may have been true, it was the wind that caused me to continue moving. As Judge Judy might say, "sorry".

As far as what might or might not have been true, the agent was positioned on a point in full view of where I was and observed the whole "capital crime". Hard to argue with an agent of the court.

Lesson learned.

All forward motion from the motor/trolling motor has to be stopped before you can legally shoot. Boat does not have to be anchored, you can drift with the current or wind or paddle a boat and shoot. Just as long as you are not using an electric, gas, diesel, etc power source to propel the boat.

So, would I have to lower the mast on my sail boat before I could shoot?... Lol!

you have to lower your sail. Like a duck won't see a sail.
