Salt water spinning reel

I am looking to buy a new spinning reel for salt water . Something in the price range of $100 to $150 bucks i use 12lb big game mono any suggestions?

Frank Buck 02-03-2012 11:40 AM

Shimano

Might get hammered on this one, buy I like Shimano Sahara 2500FD or even the Sedona 2500FD...Just my .02...

meaux fishing 02-03-2012 11:51 AM

I got a couple of shimano symetres had no problems with them and all I fish is salt I think they are around $100. I personally like the 4000 series but some people prefer the 2500

Montauk17 02-03-2012 11:52 AM

Hard to beat shimano....although I got a cheap quantum I been using in salt for a few years with no problems.

Garfish 02-03-2012 11:53 AM

Shimano Spheros. My brother has one and it's been a workhorse for him. I need to get one myself.

YellowMouth7 02-03-2012 11:57 AM

SHimano for sure

inchspinner 02-03-2012 12:07 PM

shimano......nuff said.

Fishing line

Not trying to hijack here, but we have overwhelming support for shimano....My addendum question here is what fishing line to use for spec red combo...? I have 30lb powerpro which is strong....however doing a quick bait change or re-tying is a beyotch....Wont cut with my side cutters on my needle nose, usually have to stop and get out the fingernail clippers...Do I change line or just get a better tool to cut the line? Just wondering what you guys do...

eman 02-03-2012 01:09 PM

i use okuma and 30 lb PP. carry a small pair of scissors cuts PP like butter.
Polmar knot is quick and easy to tie. I have a 4" long pair of scissors that fit in my back pocket along w/ a 8" section of broom handle in case i get snagged.

Montauk17 02-03-2012 01:10 PM

Braid is the way to go for spinners.....holds more line and no aggravating line twist to deal with.

X2 Penn Battles are great spinning reels

mr crab 02-03-2012 02:03 PM

I just bought a Penn 260 Slammer. It is the best spinner I've ever had. (Not that I've had many) $100 on amazon.com

mr crab 02-03-2012 02:05 PM

Oh yeah. I spooled it with 14lb cajun red mono. No problems so far.

X2 - I only have an okuma spinning reel I use for salt water and I have never used aything but braid on it..

YellowMouth7 02-03-2012 02:17 PM

I always tie a 3-4ft floro leader to my braid for the low vis and the easier bait switch. Learn to tie a uni to uni knot if you do not lnow already and this will make life much easier.

X 2

I have some Shimano Stradic CI4's. More than you want to pay, but light weight and great for saltwater.
If I were you, I wouldn't put more than 15 lb. braid on them. You get a lot of line twist with any braid over 15 lbs. on a small spinning reel. I moved up to 20 lb. once due to being in a hurry and not looking for the 15 lb., big mistake, in my opinion.
I love using a light weight reel to fish inland. Makes it a lot more fun.

speck cc 02-03-2012 02:35 PM

call me cheap... but i have been using the quantum optix from academy for the past 5 years... $25 and i haven't had one fail on me yet... still work like the day i bought them.

Same one I got.....handled some big nasty reds no problem.

Jedi Lure Tricks 02-03-2012 03:11 PM

shimano for sure.. stradic is in your range and is a smooth reel.

i got a pair of the Lew's anodized aluminum pliers with the side cutters for $30. the cutters are tungsten and they cut braid awesome with one snip! and if the cutters eventually happen to wear out, they are replacable as are the jaws of the pliers! got em 6 months ago, shot it with corrosion-x and havent seen a speck of rust.

check em out here: http://www.sportsmansfactoryoutlet.c...Fishing/Detail

Ray 02-03-2012 03:12 PM

Them green and blue floating fishing pliers cut braid real good too.
X-Tool or something like that.

kenmore_mo 02-03-2012 03:43 PM

penn battle

Frank Buck 02-03-2012 04:01 PM

all this fishing talk and all this rain....Lawd help dem fishies when all this freshwater moves out...You guys would laugh if you saw me tie a fishing knot...The OP said to tie uni with flourocarbon on the end for quicker bait change and visual....I would need to go to a ROCO class for 8 hrs to get that right! LOL...Great idea when you think about it, but I guarantee you I'd find a way to screw that up!

bambam075 02-03-2012 05:24 PM

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. Think i might check out the penn battle. I like the shimanos but i find they are a little over priced. I have a shimano cardiff and i have used the calcutta and i find my ambassodors do just as good of a job as the shimano (baitcast) i guess it just preference. Thanks angin for the help.

PaulMyers 02-03-2012 06:38 PM

Outcast Reel Co. Makes a great spinning reel and it sells for 89.95. Glen that owns Stick'Em Rods owns Outcast Reel Company. Great guy and backs up his product.
I have one at the house if you want to take a look at it.
+1

fishaholic82 02-03-2012 07:12 PM

I've been using US Reels 240 supercaster reels for 4 years now and I love them. Great drag and can handle a wide range of line size from mono to braid. They're definitely worth throwing in the mix of possibilties.

If the shimano's are a little out of your price range, go with Okuma. I have a couple that are about 5 yrs old and still silky smooth.

SGib 02-04-2012 09:55 AM

If you tie directly to your bait try using Tony clips. Makes swapping quick and easy. Fins windtamer is my braid Of choice.

Jrchip1 02-04-2012 01:38 PM

It's all about how easy it is to "click the bale" over. I've owned about 10 Spinning reels in the last 10 years, love to fish with them, but in general I find none of the ones I've bought in the +/- $100.00 range hold up more 2-3 seasons of moderate use. Bait casting on the other hand go and go and last forever.

That Stratic CI4 is light for a spinning reel. You don't know how light it is till you fish a few times with one then swap to the aluminum Stratic. It's a tough reel too. I have caught some Reds up to 30 lbs. and a Drum that was 40+ lbs.
Light weight rod and reel makes all the difference on a long day of fishing.

Wide Open 02-09-2012 01:26 PM

I bought 2 CI4's last year , and used em all summer! Couldn't kill em! They are extremely light and good! I bought the 2500 series, they're like the Core 50mg of spinning reels take care of em and they'll go forever!

Ray 02-09-2012 01:32 PM

I got 2 of them too. Love them thangs.
