Any Turkey Hunters Out There?

Just wonderin if we got any turkey hunters out there? Gettin into it this year, so just wonderin if anyone from the Lake Charles area hunts and if they hunt the public lands around here. Unfortunately, that is my only option for the near future. Hoping to get on West Bay lottery.

wtretrievers 02-06-2012 12:51 PM

Me & my boys turkey hunt, but we hunt in Mississippi. Our place is loaded with birds.

I hunt on my deer lease in DeRidder. If you are looknig for public land to hunt I would try Clear Creek and Kisatchie NF/ Fort Polk. I know alot of people who have success up there.

Duck Butter 02-06-2012 02:42 PM

Every bit of public turkey hunting land in Louisiana is hunted and hunted pretty hard, BUT many of the people will only hunt opening weekend and most of them only opening day til about 9 am (many 'turkey hunters' are just 'turkeys':), they see a flock of turkeys during the winter where they deer hunt and they get real pumped up and when they get there opening day where they saw those turkeys and don't hear ten turkeys gobbling at daylight they get discouraged, those turkeys split up and may be 5 miles from that area:rotfl:) Hunt the weekdays and especially the last week of the season. There will be less people and the turkeys are not as 'henned up' later in the season and are actually looking for some female companionship. I only got to hunt twice last year and it was on a new area I never stepped foot on before. Went to check it out on the afternoon before the last day and ended up killing one within an hour of being there. Didn't see a single person. Also, be REALLY REALLY tight-lipped if you do happen to find a bird or two, tell anyone who asks you about your hunt that you didn't see or hear anything and that you were leaving to go fish Big Lake because the trout were jumping in the boat at Joe's Cove:grinpimp:

Here are some I've taken over the past few years. I can't call worth a crap so I have to spend alot of time in the woods and try to be in the right place at the right time.

Good advice, thanks Duck Butter. I know the WMA's are heavily pressured when it comes to anything, but good advice about hunting the last week of the season.

Also thinking about hunting those, especially clear creek late in the season. CC may be my only option if I don't get drawn for West Bay. I'm a little iffy on Kisatchie because I know that is a hot spot for turkeys and ALOT of people hunt there.

Those Birds are from Public WMA's.

I love turkey hunting. I hunt Sherbune WMA a few times a season. Since the last storm, real hard to get on birds with down trees. I have some private land in St. Francisville that I hunt mostly.

It's addictive!!! I will be hunting our new place in Mississippi this year. We have a ton of birds, but we have way too many hens. I had 35 in one food plot the last weekend of deer season, and only had 1 tom in the bunch. He was huge and will be hard to kill with all those ladies. It should be a good year since we had a good food crop and we have some great habitat for them.

PBJ, maybe you could line 'em out on that Kisatchie turkey hunting, like where to go AND WHERE NOT TO GO :grinpimp::p

You're right. When you hear one gobbling its head off and coming closer and closer it really gets the blood flowing. Good luck this year!! If you hunt where there are alot of turkeys and spend enough time in the woods you will eventually get one.

DUCKGOGETTER 02-09-2012 02:27 PM

I've never been, but it's definately on my bucket list

Duck Butter 02-09-2012 03:03 PM

You think Big Lake fishing is bad, go to Big Lake WMA on opening day of turkey season:shaking: I almost hope that I don't hear one gobble at daybreak, because 10 others heard him too!

My cousin lives in Texas and had a lease. He killed turkeys in the fall but never in the spring. I talked him into makin a spring hunt and we finally did it. The first Mornin we had a Jake standing by the decoy and a double bearded boss bustin through the mesquites to get to us. I thought my cousin was gonna shake all the acorns off that little scrub oak we was sittin against.

That is not a stretching the truth.

I was up there a few years back. At 4 in the morning, they needed a traffic cop to direct traffic.

We had located some Toms gobbling at sundown the day before the season opened. There had only been one other person down this trail that evening.

The next morning, there was 3 other trucks parked at this trail more than an hour before daylight. After we made the 3/4 mile walk, there were 2 guys waiting where we heard the gobbling. They told us that there were other hunters 200 yards down the trail. Before daylight several hunters walked on past us and 2 more stopped just a little down the trail.

Daylight...... Wow! First 2 Tom's gobbled off to the north just as the sky first started to lighten up, then one or 2 gobbled to the SW. Then a group of a dozen or more "shook" the trees just a few hundred yards to the south. This went on for a little while and our little group talked about which direction we would head out.

We headed out toward the big group of Toms. By the time we got set up back in the woods, there was a hunter making lots of calls [this in not good] off to our left a hundred. We decided to make a big circle to come in from the back side of these Tom's. Our "circle" got cut short because we spotted 2 other hunters off in front of us, so we setup in the first good spot we found for the 3 of us to hunt.

About 30 min later I spotted a hen moving through our area. Just as the hen was going out of sight.....Boom, my friend shot at a Jake, but we did not get him. He said the Tom walked up close to the other hunter so he could not take that shot. The Tom got spooked and took of flying.... that is when he took a shot.

With all the turkey and hunters in that area..... there was only 1 other shot that morning, and it was fairly far away.

I have not been back up there and don't ever plan to go again. The picture is actually on Tensas River.
