Getting a new boat!

2 Attachment(s)
Well, after much deliberation I have decided to get a new skiff to take trips out of. This is a big decision for me with Wyatt just about to come home but I need to take my guide business to the next level and a new skiff is the way to do it. I decided on a Beavertail BT3. The boat is an 18' flats boat with a Yamaha F70. I will be posting pictures of the build as I get them from Will the owner of the company. I am supposed to be getting the boat March 9th! I am really excited as this is the first thing I have ever bought brand new. After the 9th anyone wanting to take a trip in the new skiff is welcome. I need to pay for this beast! lol

Awesome man. Good luck with the new boat. Be sure to post up some pics when you get it!!

If you are looking at flats skiffs, I can say with no uncertainty that Beavertail has had the best customer service of all the other makers. I will put money on that right now. I will need to fish the boat a few times to tell you about its performance. Everything I have read and heard from people I have called with the BT3 tells me it is the cat's meow.

I was possibly looking at a skiff because I love to fish the shallow flat and sight cast, but with a rapidly growing family I may just go with a 21' or 22' CC but have not decided what I should do yet.

Congrats on the ride Lucas! Got a lot of friends in FL that love their BT.

BIGJ 02-11-2012 09:18 PM

Nice looking ride there Lucas.

ifsteve 02-12-2012 05:59 PM

Nice ride and congrats on the new rig. But you really ought to think about the 90. Three guys and gear in that boat with a 70 will be fine but a tad underpowered for my tastes.

Mediumheavyaction6'6 02-13-2012 12:22 PM

I appreciate the advice. When you pole 8 hours plus a day, I prefer the almost 100 pounds less in weight.

The Beavertail BT3 will be here tomorrow! I finally got some pics of the build yesterday. I am supposed to be getting some more but if I don't I'll take plenty when she gets here. I think the blue I picked out has a very classic Florida Keys look or at least that is I am telling myself. She won't sit long I take her for a test drive Friday and then I have a trip in her Saturday! Redfish, black drum, sheepshead, tarpon, and sharks all beware. I am coming with a fly rod to get you and nothing is going to stop me now.

The beavertail BT3 is bar none the best poling, driest riding, most stable technical skiff I have been in. The boat handle a stiff 30 mph breeze in lake robin on Friday afternoon. The chop was substantial to say the least and I was able run cross sea and stay dry. I poled into a 20 mph east wind all day yesterday and I have never been less sore or tired. The boat tracks straight and spins on a dime. Will, the owner of Aeon Marine tells me that the inverted keels on the bottom of the boat make all the difference in the world. I can say that I am absolutely in love with this boat and I definitely made the right decision. I will add some pics of her in the water when I get them from Will.

Micah 03-11-2012 02:58 PM

Boat looks great!!!

PaulMyers 03-11-2012 02:59 PM

Beautiful Lucas!

I'm glad its just what the Dr ordered. :)

+1

Montauk17 03-11-2012 02:59 PM

Congrats bro it looks really nice....how you like the f70?

Mediumheavyaction6'6 03-11-2012 03:06 PM

I really like the motor. It is so quiet. I need to get a different prop. The one on it is a Power Tech 4 blade 17 pitch. Will is going to let me try two more props on it to get the right one (on his dime). I am going to try a 3 blade 15 next. I am hoping to get the mid to upper 30's with that. I couldn't turn more than 4600 rpm's with what's on it.

Yeah thats way too low....those motors can rev to 6,300 rpm. My guess your will need a 13.5 -13 pitch 3 blade. It's a tunnel hull right? If so the powertech SWW would be a good choice. Get the right prop on it ASAP running a prop the motor wont turn to peak rpm can do damage. Even more so because you are still in break in. http://www.ptprop.com/index.php?page...mart&Itemid=46

Mediumheavyaction6'6 03-11-2012 03:41 PM

I will have it before my next trip next Friday.
