Paddletail vs Eel bait

Searched the web and can't really find much on the topic. Figured Some of you trout masters might. Do you use one more than the other? Or paddles for reds eels for trout? Use one based on conditions? Thanks in advanced.

I prefer paddle or curl tails when its warmer and the fish are more active ,and the eel type when i fish slower during the colder months.

fishinpox 02-18-2012 10:27 PM

I like a curly tail for the action , in the cold months nothing beat a curly tail grub very slowly moved and just let the current move the tail ..

Top Dawg 02-18-2012 10:33 PM

I like eels.

"W" 02-18-2012 10:53 PM

100% eels last time I used a paddle tail was back in 1980''s when I fished with cocahoes with my old man

Until I stop catching with straight tail baits....don't see change

Ex.p . Sand eels, sparkle beetles, grubs, tidle surge split tail etc.

SGib 02-18-2012 10:58 PM

W. You throw eels year round?

mcjaredsandwich 02-18-2012 10:59 PM

Depends. Some days Ill throw a sandeel with no bites and put on a hackberry hustler and get bit or a swimbait and get bit, some days Ill get no bites on a paddle tail and get bit on a eel bait. Just depends I guess. If I am not getting bit I will change baits often to see what they want.

SaltyShaw 02-18-2012 11:00 PM

He forgot Jerk Jr's lol
Straight tails here for me as well, but I have been throwing paddle tails lately
I like em both me they both put fish in the box

He also throws exclusively waterloo rods and core 50mgs. He is a pro on big lake.

And falcon rods suck btw.

Oh yes there is.......old ones rock! New ones suck

SGib 02-19-2012 10:44 AM

Mine is an 08 tunnel. Seems to be built solid no problems at all (knock on wood) but that etec is a different story. Sooo eels seem to be the popular trout plastic. I feel when I use paddletails I catch more reds but it may be related to where I toss em.

Yeh you right chum bucket . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . NOT:p

mr crab 02-23-2012 12:53 AM

Paddle or curly tails seem to work better for me.

Ratdog 02-23-2012 02:44 PM

Don't know if dis matters cuz I don't use plastic often but I do notic a change from shrimp back to shad then to shrimp during this time of year. They both have a color change in the tail as well as shape diff. But take it as u like .
Bout to switch back to shad now/ next week.
I try a double rig to see what's on da minue and then double up on dat.

SGib 02-23-2012 03:09 PM

Rat dog!! I'm honored you replied. Real man of geunis!

coolhand 02-23-2012 04:15 PM

Paddle tails for me. Cocahoes, Saltwater Assassins, and Tsunamis.

Thanks bro. Might I also add depth change due to salinity .
I think. But that is linked to temp too.

Gottogo49 02-23-2012 07:25 PM

If the fall, I do better on eels or shrimp tails like a DOA.
Later after the shrimp have left the lake, I do better on plastic cocahoes.
In the summer when it's hot, I like a gulp swimming minnow.
The problem with swimming minnows is that the croakers and pinfish eat the tails off
but flounder love them so it's worth the hassle.

The Browns Flappin Devil is a sweet bait. I use these and also cut and splice them with a mini solder iron to make them a 3.75 inch bait. I prefer prefer a wiggling tail v a rat tail but carry both in case my buddy is hammer'n them on the rat. It happens. :-)
