Pogie or shad. Artificial when it warns up.

Buffalo cut up in chunks or catfish heads. Also herron, pogie, or shad.

If you are serious, you are full of ****.

southern151 02-19-2012 10:32 PM

Really, water conditions dictate what type of bait used...temp, current, etc...

flounder_smacker 02-19-2012 10:59 PM

One piece of pogie and two pieces of artificial.

My father-in-law put out a minnow trap last year baited with bread and a leftover chicken leg. The creek we put the trap in turned out to be a honey hole for crayfish. He put the trap in a few more times using only bread and continued to catch them until the water level in the creek was too low to cover the trap.

Beef melt!!! That's what every one I know uses

flounder_smacker 02-20-2012 01:45 PM

Beef melt works but they eat it to fast. If you are catching a bunch u need something that will stay in the trap. I helped a old craw fisherman one season he would put one piece of fish pogie or carp the two pieces of that hard artificial. He told me if u just put fish they will eat it to quick and start eating themselves.

This bait reminds me of cattle cake really. I'm not real sure where you'd find it in ill.

scooled101 02-20-2012 11:17 PM

Purina makes one. Find a feedstore that carries Purina and have them order some for you.

X2. It looks like a range cube on steroids.

Thanks for the replies, one more question I have some areas this season that a single net trap would work good but I see there are the square traps and the round ones that collapse. Anyone have any info/experience with these style of traps?

If you are going to recreational fish with drop nets, make some clips out of coat hangers and clip beef melt to the center so the crawfish don't walk off with the bait. The fish and artificial bait is normally used in wire traps.

Where in laffayette can pick up some square traps ? Twine place off of Cameron Street ?

T and F fishing 02-21-2012 07:46 PM

The regular pillow looking traps but they are square on the bottom and fold over at the top where you empty the crawfish out .

kibb 02-21-2012 08:41 PM

Maybe try www.crawfishcenter.com
