What's Your Best Trick at the Boat Ramp?

I think most of us have needed a second try at the trailer when the wind and/or tide pushed us sideways. But last year I had a few memorable ones:

good

The 90hp Merc would only go in reverse. We put in at Calcasieu Point and backed out. We had to go in reverse in a big circle back to the dock and then hand line onto the trailer.

better

Lifting a cooler out of the boat in the prep area at Calcasieu Point. The handle of the cooler broke off and I was lifting with so much force my fist flew into my nose and left me bleeding all over the parking lot.

best

I was talking about all the fish we caught with the guys at the dock. Wasn't paying attention and walked right off the dock into the water. The good folks at the dock fished me out, but were joking about it for weeks. I'm glad no one took a picture of the last two.

I got nuthin on you!

Duck Butter 04-02-2012 08:39 AM

Both involved LOW water, once at Beouf River bout 4 in the morning been frog hunting seeing tons of gators backed too far down, had to get in the water and push up the trailer while buddy pulled up

2nd time was with Superthrill down in Golden Meadow in February, tide was LOW and went off end of ramp. Figured I could get in the boat and pick up the bunks of the trailer and hold em up while he drove off. Ended up using the net to grab one of the bunks well it didn't work and the net broke. Had to strip down and push it out was cold, but next day we were fishing and he hung a beast of a trout (well over 7 lbs) right next to boat and since we had no net you know the rest of the story:( At least it wasn't me:D

:work::rotfl:, that reminded me of when I was around 14 we were going to meet up with the members of this hunting club we had just joined. I had my hat down low (was 14 so I was a tough guy:grinpimp:) guys were sitting around outside and there was a front end loader with the bucket up between us and them and I didn't see it. Walking along and BAM! my head runs into the bucket knocked me down funny as heck

Armand16 04-02-2012 09:01 AM

Lmao thats funny. I had a friend walk off of a dock before and that is a hilarious site to see

I've busted enough nets in my life and also had multiple fish on at the same time enough times, that now I don't leave home without 2 or 3 nets in the boat, and I'm thinking about getting a gaff.

Lake Chuck Duck 04-02-2012 09:09 AM

We were down at a buddy's wharf at big lake old settlement doing some night fishing. This was the best night of night fishing I ever had in my life!!!! Slung trout and reds all night! Well I had my ice chest that was full to the top with our catch sitting on top of one of those rolling ice chest with the handle in the middle. Guy was walking in front of me rolling the chests and my hands were full of rods and tackle box. He hit a bump and there went the chest! It hit on its side on the wharf and cracked open. There went the catch for the night! Back in the water they went. So mad:pissed:

Armand16 04-02-2012 09:20 AM

I went fishing with a lady friend so I had no help launching the boat. I park the truck then hop in the boat and take off. As soon as we got on plane water rushes forward. No plug. Tried to force the plug in but the pressure was too great. Hauled but back to the landing and sprint to my truck to load the boat by myself. I cut everyone in line and didn't have time to explain. They prob thought I was some crazy a-hole. The boat had about a foot of water in it but at least it didn't sink.

Fishing this past Saturday, and was boarded by the Coast Guard, they were checking safety stuff, and asked about throwable device, and my good friend handed the Coastie a Cast Net.

When my wife or son fish with me I get out the boat and back the trailer in and they will run the boat on the trailer. I pull up to the dock give my wife the wheel and step off the bow and lost my ballance. I put one foot back on the boat but she was all ready backing away....

I did a split one leg on the dock the other on the boat until SPLASH in the water! She just about wet herself laughing.

Duck Butter 04-02-2012 02:58 PM

Not at the boat ramp, but in January water was high we were riding around looking for ducks and I had to urinate. Got on front of boat and let er rip, buddy was driving and we were going into this slough and there was an old houseboat right there at the entrance. Well that houseboat was anchored to a cable that was on the other side of the slough. That cable was about 9 inches under the water so when we went over it and the slack finally got out of it, I was catapulted into the water:rotfl:
Cold cold cold. Shoulda left right then, but later that night same buddy busted his butt 3 times on the icy boat ramp and got soaked, ran outta gas on way back to camp, all kindsa things happened that night

Montauk17 04-02-2012 03:02 PM

Worse one I had was loading a 36 foot contender by hand. We had two people in the back swimming pushing the boat.....three in the front took 2 hours. Customer jumped a reef and smoked the lower units.

ElectricChicken 04-02-2012 03:22 PM

I gotta tell on my buddy Rockfish. We are at Millers Lake in a 12' jon with a trolling motor. Springtime and its chilly. We have busted the bass. He catches one 5 3/4lb and I catch one 6 1/4lbs on back to back cast. It's getting late and we are trolling back to the landing fishing the camps. All of a sudden the boat rocks and my buddy hits the water. He grabs the side of the boat and is going to try to get back in but it will flip so he swims to the lauch. He walks up the boat ramp and I swear he looked like the Boggy Creek Monster coming out of that water with them arms held out dripping. Maybe even Squatch!! It was cold so he went to the truck while I trolled in. Priceless!!

PUREBAY2200 04-02-2012 03:26 PM

i witnessed a wife and husband loading a brand new skeeter 24v at the rigolets in 2009.
husband backed trailer in strait, wife put the boat on sideways....... for some reason she turned the wheel when she was 1/4 the way on the trailer and hit the throttle..... boat landed high and dry on the ramp..... nuttin but cement under it.....

there was some construction goin on at the landing, so they used 2 fork lifts to raise the boat and the husband backed the trailer under the boat........he never yelled or screamed at her; his first words were " baby, are you ok"

she just cried and cried.

it was a sight for sure.

southern151 04-02-2012 03:36 PM

At Fred's on the River, we used to go sit on the patio on Sunday evenings just to witness the drunken idiocy...

One Sunday, a husband and wife pull up at the dock, she stumbles to the truck and backs it down. They had idiot sticks on the trailer and all. She did a pretty good job considering she could barely get the truck unlocked! Well, he completely missed the trailer! He pretty much dry docked that boat on the ramp. The screaming fit that followed about how stupid she was for not backing the trailer down where he told her to and how only a moron could not back a trailer sent her walking away, cussing him till she was out of sight!

After the laughter subsided, several of us helped him push the boat off of the ramp and another man loaded it! Great times at Fred's!

Damn fellas! Pretty funny stories. I've been pretty careful at the launches, no stories for me....yet

Big Flounder 04-02-2012 03:59 PM

I used to work with this guy Mr. Danny and his son in law. We all went fishing one day after work in seperate boats. Well Mr. Danny and his son in law were the first ones back and I pulled up just in time for the show! Danny told son in law to go get the truck so he does. Mr. Danny fails to tell him he has some new Teflon boards on the trailor so he drives the boat on the trailor and signals him to pull forward! That dude punched it and drove all the way to the road to give other people room to load and never noticed Danny and the boat sitting in the middle of the launch! Thank god it was not a glass boat. With the help of the rest of the people laughing their butts off we pushed it back in and tried again but hooking the chain that time.

Raymond 04-02-2012 04:14 PM

Gary's landing, 3 days before Christmas and the water was very high. Big backed my boat down past the ramp and it was too deep for me to even grab the side bunks and I was not going to get necked. I finally told him to drag it out, 4 wd low did it but the axle came out sideways. Made out hunt and after driving to Eunice for another trailer we got it back to be serviced.:shaking:

Last summer wife wants to go crabbing at Lamberts, launch boat by myself and park. Get back to boat and she informed me I left the plugs out and water was coming in!:pissed: Find plugs hit bilge and she was semi dry going through Grand.:pissed:

bohunterbiff 04-02-2012 04:24 PM

My then 8 year old son was helping me put the boat in, I had untied the tie-downs, and loosened the winch bow strap. As I backed the boat in, it started floating and didnt stop!!!! My son had gone around and "helped" daddy by unhooking the bow strap. After a good 60+ yard swim I got the boat back. To this day that is his favorite story!!!!

MathGeek 04-02-2012 04:29 PM

Wow, got some great stories here. One more:

Not at the boat ramp, but my kids keep reminding me of it, so it must be memorable:

It was about our third trip fishing the Colorado mountain reservoirs, and we were absolutely smoking the (freshwater) trout. Three of my kids and I put a limit in the box in a couple of hours. Things were fast and furious with multiple nets in use at the same time, flipping the fish into the bottom of the boat just to free up the net for the next fish. We get home and when I clean the fish, I notice that we're one fish short of a limit, so I simply figure that we miscounted in all the excitement.

Three days later, the smell coming from the boat revealed that we had counted correctly and one of the fish had flopped into a storage area.

CajunSpecial 04-02-2012 04:54 PM

Pulled into Sweetwater Marina early one morning, and my buddy and I commenced to loading gear, unstrapping the boat, talking with the guys working around there, getting our sweetwater special, general early morning excited hustle. We backed the boat down the ramp and into the water. Kept going back, and as the trailer went deeper into the water, the back of the boat started to drag under too. Water started pouring over the back. Only then did I realize that I had only taken off one of the two straps that hold the back of the boat down and the second one was dragging me down with the trailer. Damn near sunk the boat at the ramp. The sweetwater guys got a kick out of that.

Here is a slick trick for trailer backed down too far- off the end of the ramp. Ease the anchor down and catch the back of the trailer, pull it up a little then slowly move truck and trailer forward and back on the ramp. Doesn't always work but it's worth a try. Better than stripping down when it's cold.

Great idea, would've never thought of it.

oldwelder 04-02-2012 07:06 PM

OK before I start I have to clarify that the following is not my wife's fault. I had a very high trailer that tilted the only way to launch was to pull the pin to tilt. One day when returning I backed the trailer down , then told her to pull up when I waved, drove boat on trailer gave the wave and off we go. Didn't realize I had not latched the trailer when it got to the top of the launch it tilted and we launched in the middle of the parking lot.

Not me but my son. Having trailer issues. Brought it to the shop and they put teflon on the bunks. Son took the boat to Ellender's Bridge to launch and undid the strap and all then started backing down and launched the boat in the middle of the ramp.

4 of us arrive at my camp early one morning, we hook up boats & go to launch on our landing, When my 2 buddies start down the ramp one is backing down with truck & the other is sitting in seat on front deck, ramp is STEEP & about 50 yards to the water, well in their hurry they didn't latch it when it was set on the ball so when the boat started down the landing it came off the ball:eek: Let me tell you 50 yards is a LONG way!!!! As boat & trailer came down the steep ramp it was gaining speed & the tongue was slapping the concrete about every 10ft! My buddy on front deck was bent over in the seat (going backwards) leaned over with both hands grasping each side of the boat screaming OH LORD JESUS HERE I COME!!!!:*****:The boat gets 20ft from the water & does a 90 degree turn & stops between 2 cypress trees! Boat has come to a stop & he is still hanging on & still screaming OH LORD JESUS HERE I COME!:p

I have another one. My in laws live on the Bayou Teche in Patterson. One weekend I had my boat in the bayou and had left it behind there house. I unhooked the trailer and just left it there all weekend. End of the weekend I had to pick up the boat mother in law is going to hep me. So I go to the landing in the boat and she hooks up the trailer to my truck and goes to meet me. I'm waiting at the landing when she drives up. She never put the younger jack up! She drove over 4 miles with the trailer tounge jack down! That little plastic wheel was dang near worn off! I asked her didn't you notice? She said I thought it was a little loud.

If you have a really long winch strap and the water is warm, run your winch strap under the last crossmember on the trailer. Hook the strap to the eye of the boat and then winch the slack out. This should lift the trailer enough to clear the edge of the ramp.

I was a young teenager a very long time ago, but remember it like it was yesterday. We were at the I-10 launch and were loading our boat on the trailer. Not sure if it is still the same, but there used to be a double L in the sides of the wharf. I was tasked with holding the rope and pulling the boat to the trailer once it was backed in the water. We were nosed up to the L, so I had to push it out to get the boat around it. Well I gave a really hard push and leaned into it - past the point of no return. Gravity took over and I took a swim.

gasdad 04-03-2012 06:54 AM

Fishing with a friend and when we approached his pier to dock the boat one of crew jumped out the boat with bow rope in hand. Once his feet hit the deck of the pier it seemed like he had springs in his boat shoes. He hit the deck, made a small jump in the air and flew into the water on the other side of the pier--LMAO. No harm done to him other than his pride and wet cigarettes.

My buddy picked me up one morning to go fishing. He had a 20' welded aluminum boat with a 150 on it. He was pulling it with a datson pickup. I was leary, but figured it would be okay. We launched in Hackberry, no problems. When we got back to the ramp, it was low tide. We trailered the boat. He tried to pull out and sure enough, the truck wheels just spun on the wet cement. In fact every time he tried the truck actually slid further back. I tried pushing the truck. It would not budge. Luckily there were a lot of people there. By the time we finally got the boat out we had two guys jumping in the back of the truck and four pushing. Never again.

When this happens, let boat come back into water & put motor in gear & push with boat, it'll get truck momentum going & drive right out. Don't forget to trim up!
