Me and bayouchub Went to madisonville to tow in a boat with engine issues; planned to bass fish after but the wind laid down and we decided to hit the causeway. Fished from 5-7:15.
Caught 8 trout fast, weren't planning on keeping. But after catching a few so fast we decided to start keeping.
Got on a good bite even with the wind and dirty water.
Caught em on matrix shad lemon and salt/pepper bay chovey.
Kept enough for a fish fry Sunday.

It takes more than ideal conditions to catch fish in Lake Pontchartrain....unlike Big Lake.

PUREBAY2200 04-07-2012 08:43 PM

^^^^^^^
Funny!!!!

And true.

PUREBAY2200 04-07-2012 09:12 PM

We got back to the launch yesterday and there was 3 other boats that had been fishing....zero trout.

It ain't as easy as it appears.

2 person limit on lake p is a great day and will take a while.
3-4 person limit would b amazing!!

And that's a 25 fish limit..... Not 15.

fishinpox 04-07-2012 09:14 PM

I had five nice ones today, n missed another 10 and lost 3 more at the side of the boat. Very hard to feel that soft bite when it's that bumpy n windy out . I saw the fish move my line before I felt it today

Yeah, if bottom bumpin' ain't your thing....you best steer clear of the real Big Lake. Personally, that just never was my cup o' tea.

PUREBAY2200 04-07-2012 09:20 PM

They were blasting the lures yesterday!!
When they hit they ran with it; not the usual bit and sit.

Ita hard to set a hook When it's windy and the boats moving up an down.

Salty 04-07-2012 09:30 PM

I've only been to the Causeway a couple times and the only fish I caught were by accident. Either the fish swallowed the lure while it was sittin' on bottom, or, hit it on the retrieve back in. It's fun pullin' up out of that deep water, tho.

ckinchen 04-07-2012 09:42 PM

Great report, thanks.

Garfish 04-07-2012 09:50 PM

Lake P fatties! Nice.

Dink 04-07-2012 10:17 PM

I didn't get off the motor all day. Had 2 newbs with me and no trolling motor. Had to struggle to keep the boat in position with the big motor......structure running north/south with an east wind ain't easy!!! They were drinking more than they were fishing......its my buds bday

PUREBAY2200 04-07-2012 10:19 PM

Haha!
Sounds like fun Tim.
And u did a good deed while out there; the fishing gods will reward you!

The area where the bridges are is 12 ft average.....

But like bob said there are spots to throw top water.

The banks out of bayou lacombe are shallow.
And there are a few spots on the south bank by trestles and twin spans that I have caught on topwater.

You ever tried the north bank from the mouth of the Tchefuncte towards the Causeway? We caught 'em there a couple times. Also, headed east from the north foot of the Hwy. 11 bridge where all the pilings are.

PUREBAY2200 04-07-2012 11:18 PM

I've caught reds on that north bank; had a buddy catch trout there a few times.
Never fished the spot off hwy 11.
I have caught a good mess in lakeshore estates a few times.

Salty 04-07-2012 11:21 PM

One time in October when the Tchefuncte was really low...we caught rat reds out the wazou around them lilly pads in the mouth......on a Pop R'a. Now, that was a blast.

PUREBAY2200 04-07-2012 11:25 PM

Haha
I bet so!!
There are stumps and logs galore in there!
