What's best for gnats?
 

Hi,
I am about to make my first trip to the marsh in a couple of weeks and I am looking for the best thing to help keep the gnats away. I have heard that
victoria secret amber romance works well but I wanted to see if there is anything new out there that might be better.

Amber Romance, have tried other things but can't beat it. Also Avon Skin So Soft lotion helps, just not as good. I worked 7 and 7 in the marsh for over a yr and that is what we used.

Guy I work with uses the Amber romance, he said he doesn't give a rats &?? How sweet he smells cause it works.

Swamp swatter=Amber romance, don't be fooled and pay quadruple for the same stuff.

Swamp swatter i have never used but heard it works good. Its like 8 bucks a bottle..Dont know how much amber romance is..

Amber romance is $7.50 for a bottle 4 times the size. I will say, the stuff works. My fishing buddy's and I stopped at a little diner in Leesville after fishing Toledo and the waitress smelled just like us. I asked her if she was wearing Amber Romance, she said yes, how did you know? I told her it was my favorite...for bug spray.

I bought the swamp swatter it works but the victoria secret is a lot more cheaper. skin so soft works too. I'd get a misquito net for my head and wear a breathable long sleeve shirt.

Amber romance!!! Went flyfishing with lucas and austin n they busted that out n were smellin like strippers. I declined......until the gnats started then i put sum on and felt like hittin da stripper pole

the spray and the lotion both work... give it a shot cant hurt. If you are married you better tell your wife about it first though lol

Get you a cheap bottle of vanilla extract, and a spritzer bottle from wal mart. Spray the extract on straight. Have to reapply every few hours, but no more gnats. All for less than 5 bucks.

My wife has informed me that she'd prefer to place the order for Amber Romance from Victoria's as she'd rather I not be getting all the follow-up emails with the scantily clad women.

But first, I thought I'd ask if the gnat issue is expected to continue into June, or is it a seasonal thing? We usually make our LA fishing trip in June, and I don't recall a gnat thing the past few trips. I do remember lots of bugs growing up, but I can't recall which months had which bugs. Did we just get lucky last year with respect to the bugs?

Also, what precautions are needed with respect to the Amber Romance and keeping live shrimp alive? (I'm religious about keeping other bug repellents and sunscreens out of the bait well.) Would the vanilla extract be better with respect to not contaminating live bait?

One thing I love about Colorado is the absolute absence of bugs and snakes in the mountains.

I would say the vanilla would be better for live bait since it is non toxic. Not saying the Vic Secret stuf is toxic, but it has dyes and perfumes and such in it. Just my 2 cents.

Seems the amber romance is the best bet. Looked on the Victoria's Secret website and there are lots of amber romance fragrances. Does it matter if it is a spray or lotion. Any advice on which one to choose? If I am going to smell like a stripper, I at least want to be using the right smellum.

Went to WB Saturday with my first bottle of Amber Romance. Got bit by a gnat and sprayed a couple of shots. Gone!!! I could not believe it. Works like a champ! Great advice!! EC

I heard of a new concoction yesterday for gnats, mosquitoes and all the other biting buggers. Put one half Listerine, the brown kind, and one half vanilla in a spray bottle. I sprayed some on myself and didn't notice any bugs, but it was really windy, so I'm not sure if it was the spray or the wind keeping the bugs away.

Pepsi Cola smells, appears, and tastes similar to Coca-Cola, but it is not Coca -Cola. I suppose that is why someone came up with the Coke/Pepsi challenge. We think you should try the baitshop/panty store challenge: $12 a bottle Amber Romance (dont forget the wonderful trip to your local teenage daycare , oops, i mean local mall) versus $8 a bottle swamp swatter in the marina .at the launch. It has been done by many of our retailers; spray one arm with panty store stuff, spray other arm with Swamp Swatter and you be the judge.

Here's another test: pour amber romance out on one plate and swamp swatter out on a seperate plate, leave both plates out for 10-15 minutes, you will begin to see swamp swatter begin to oxidize, amber romance will remain the same. We dont have access to all the fancy dies and chemicals that they do over in china. Swamp Swatter is hand made in Baton Rouge, LA, is by far the absolute best remedy for gnats and no-seeums.

Mal-Wart was interested in stocking Swamp Swatter last May (2012). We politely said, "No Thank you."

I have no idea what to use bc I usually just try and cover myself head to toe in clothing until the wind starts blowing. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this entire post and laughing out loud. Good stuff! Guess I'll be hitting up my local Victoria Secret soon since you guys have learned me up. Thx again for the info and the laughs.

Long socks and big rubber bands around your ankles helps. Long sleeve shirts and neck gaiters (the tube-shaped fabric the Florida guys use for sun protection on neck, ears and cheeks) help a great deal.

I've never used the Amber Romance, but the Swamp Swatter has worked very well. And it's a local company.:cheers:

I have heard of good results from a spray called Rhino spray. They use it on the Georgia coast where the biting gnats are the worst I have ever seen.

Swamp Swatter, why didn't you want to sell to Wal-mart?

thats the ticket... you can get the lotion too. If its hot I find the lotion lasts longer cause you dont sweat it off as fast

any kind of fragrance with vanilla in it. my grandpa used to make his own out of vanilla extract

The dollar General makes a vanilla body spray! It's cheap cheap you may smell like a fairy but they won't touch you! Lmao.....
