Just got back from doing some public land turkey hunting around Hays, KS. Hunted Natoma and Hill City, KS. Had never been to Kansas before. Awesome landscape. Saw a lot of deer too.

Great news from Kansas

That sounds good for Geauxtigers1421....lots of deer and great country. Nothin gets any better. How did the turkey hunt go?

specktator 05-14-2012 08:40 AM

Had a great time. First morning I killed one with 10 1/4" beard and 3/4" spurs. Called one in for my buddy that afternoon and he shot right over his head. Next day was tough we couldn't get them to cooperate. Last day I was just trying to get my buddy one but winds were blowing 40mph. Couldn't make it happen. Saw tons of turkeys and had a great time. Be back next year for sure.

If yall ever have a chance to go pheasant hunting in Kansas I highly reccomend to go. Did that once for a week and it was awesome!

Nothing better than being outdoors! This years trip is my senior trip but Every year I save up my summer workings and spend it all on a hunting trip or hunting gear later in the year. Lol
I don't know anyone who has been bear hunting so ive never really considered it!

Thanks for the pictures. That's a great bird! Congrats!

Goosepond Monster 05-14-2012 05:38 PM

Nice bird.

I've seen pictures of that bear before. It is definitely a monster. The story I read said they were calling for elk and it rushed in on them.

Yep, that's what I read also. Supposedly It was 5 feet away from the caller when the shooter saw it. Took 5 shots according to the email

Great job

Don't worry, I'd have a heart attack too...I am an outfitter for Black Bears only and believe me, they don't get that big. A nice size Black Bear here will go 300 lbs with the average size being between the 200-250 range. Here is a pic of 1 that would be in the 300 lb range.

Stupid as in pheasants everywhere. We would walk these long standing corn strips about 500 yards long and 30 yards wide in the middle of a cut corn field. If you were blocking at the end you couldn't load your gun fast enough. Also we drove a 180 class buck out of one strip. I know cuz the guy that lives up there killed it the next week.

Canadian Black Bears 05-14-2012 07:43 PM

You must have been on a preserve or something as I have hunted pheasant (cocks only, hens are illegal here in Nova Scotia, Canada) with a German Short Hair and they certainly were not easy to find. We hunted grain and corn fields and the dog, he was a top notch performer, found them ok but the wild birds were hard to raise once he went on point. We pretty much had to kick the bird in the air to get a shot. We always knew there were lots where we hunted and if not for the dog we would have been hard pressed to get 1. It sounds more like you were raising huns (hungarian partridge) as there are about a dozen or so of them in a cubby. I know there are preserves here which offer hunts for pheasants and it's nothing to get your limit in a day as they are raised by the owners of the preserves.

Lake Chuck Duck 05-14-2012 10:22 PM

I went with a friend and his dad who is originally from the area. Knows a guy that puts them up in his climate controlled barn every year.
