Line twisting problem!!

I throw a jerk jr with yellowouth hooks. My reel is set up with 12# big game. The question is why does my line twist so bad after a while of casting.

Raymond 05-17-2012 10:48 AM

Your not using braid Scooter?, no memory = no line twist. Get ya some 20# Slick 8 today at lunch and try it out. The eel baits twist and turn when ya jerk them causing the twist and shout with mono. Put two rows of mono backing and wind it on tight as ya can.

SaltERedneck 05-17-2012 10:58 AM

super slick braid with fluoro or mono leader will solve that problem

RAGINJROB 05-17-2012 11:10 AM

What type reel? You put line on backwards?

Armand16 05-17-2012 11:15 AM

This might help

meathauler 05-17-2012 11:16 AM

It's a curado. I dont think so on the line backwards part. Gonna try Raymond's idea today

I fish the same setup as you have. I don't have any problem with line twist.

So..... if we have the same reel and line the only variables are the rod and bait tied to the end of the line.

IMO.....what rod you use, should not make any different as far as "line twist".

This leaves the bait!!!!!!! It could be that the jig head hook is "off center" on your bait. If so, this could cause your bait to turn circles as you retrieve the bait.

This is What i use...P-Line Dura-Max High-Speed Rolling Treble Swivels
Its 30lbs and real small....

I tie this to end of my line then take about 10inch of Florocarb 20# test line and add to other side then bait

(if you have bad eyes you will have a hard time with these they are real small)

mako1 05-17-2012 02:22 PM

yep. use swivels

Skittawalk 05-17-2012 06:19 PM

Spro swivels and about 10'' flourocarbon leader
Saw another who fishes same rig just diff brand swivel

jchief 05-17-2012 07:03 PM

Donnie, braid with swivel and fluoro leader. If the bait is not on perfect, it will twist the line.

meathauler 05-17-2012 08:35 PM

Went to the tackle box today and got the hook up on everyone's suggestions. Ran into Raymond and he convinced me to buy a few extra things. He never stops being a salesman. Thanks Jedi and also all of yalls input

Same set up and yes if that bait is just a slight bit off center it will spin when you cast and retrieve. Notice when you cast if the bait is holding straight and not turning or spinning. Any spin will cause line twist.

Those swivels W recs. are great at stopping that line twist

I hope you didnt buy that 20 lb braid . I hope you got 50 instead. The smaller braid digs in itself bad and it will drive you crazy .

I throw a jerk jr with yellowouth hooks. My reel is set up with 12# big game.

I use the same line and have never had this problem....???

Kenner18 05-18-2012 11:52 PM

I use 20 lb power pro regular and slick 8 ,both dig into itself on the spool and cause backlashes . I also get line breaks in the middle of a cast when it digs in and backlashes. I was told to go to the larger size line and it would solve the problem .

mcjaredsandwich 05-19-2012 03:20 AM

I fish the same setup as you. I notice it a little bit, but not to the point where it wraps around my rod.

"W" 05-19-2012 06:13 AM

Best Braid out there is Fins Wind tamer , does not dig and never breaks ..
I use 20lb test with a florocarb leader for topwater and other hard baits
Still use mono only for plastics

If you think 12inch 20lb florcarb messes my top water bait your an idiot... I will tie two spooks with same length and lay side by side and you will see zero impact on the bait

fishinpox 05-19-2012 07:01 PM

Flurocarbon sinks= fact

Ray 05-19-2012 07:05 PM

Not if it is just a leader. I fish with 15 lb. braid and 20 lb. floro leader.
No sinking issues with topwaters.

fishinpox 05-19-2012 07:12 PM

I've tied a tw plug on jig rod that had fluro leaded... Plug nose dived. Now I used a 5' leader not 12"

well you have some gay leader.....

I have been using a leader for 7 years and never once effected a topwater.....and I have caught thousands of trout on topwater

fishinpox 05-19-2012 07:15 PM

Why would u even use a leader for TW???

Because I don’t like to tie to braid........and it gives shock and it has 0 effect on the topwater bait so it really don’t matter

Take off the mono and spool it up with some Fins wind tamer. Also try using a mono leader connected with a small spro swivel, I personally don't use a swivel.
