Fly fishing leader?

Is it necessary to buy a leader or can you just put some fishing line?

I just use some mono line.

I use 4 lb for bream fishing.

eman 06-07-2012 06:18 PM

I tie my own. redfish its 17lb 14lb 12lb. Trout it's 12 lb 10 lb 8 lb. taper helps the leader roll over and get the fly out to the end.
Bream i tie 8 - 6 -4

huntin fool 06-07-2012 07:15 PM

You want it to be taper'd. Tie a blood knot between lines.

Geauxtigers1421 06-07-2012 10:33 PM

Sorry for all the questions, I just started this two days ago and haven't been fishing for very long. What is taper'd?

Bigger test/size to smaller.

Starts out .125" and narrows to .100 for instance

Geauxtigers1421 06-07-2012 10:44 PM

Oh okay, thanks! Last few questions... Would the same tests work for bass as trout? The lighter line at the end or the heavier? And about how long should each be? Sorry if I'm being a pain and thanks for all the help given!

correct it will actually help the bait to roll or lay out...heavy to light

Lighter line at end. Trout and bass will be the same. I usually have around a 3 ft leader...others do differently

Oh alright, makes sense. That would also explain my troubles before with the fly landing behind where the leader starts on the fly line. I bought an already set up fly rod and reel from bass pro and the leader was just one line tied to the fly line so I guess that's why it did that.

A 3 foot leader, so about a foot with each size line?

SULPHITE 06-07-2012 10:53 PM

yep you can buy premade leaders to...which will "taper" down and will be suited for the species of fish your after

I might end up doing that. From looking at what was on mine, I thought you could just tie one strand of fishing line and be good to go but I was wrong haha. The problem is, I wouldnt know where to start when looking for one to buy. I just looked on bass pro and cabelas and there is so many lengths and makes etc. that I wouldn't know what to choose from. I will most likely just do like was posted earlier on that YouTube video though

So how do you attach the leader/tippet to the floating fly line?

eman 06-08-2012 09:16 AM

Loop knots work for attaching and i tie all my leaders w/ loops . that way i can change my tippet if it breaks or needs to be lighter / heavier.

jlsch1 06-10-2012 08:01 PM

I use to tie my own now I don't fly fish as much as I use to and check cabelas bargin cave for leaders.
smaller number like 2x is larger fly leader and 7x or higher number lighter leader.
Redfish/bass rod which 8wt I would go to 7ft (2X) or clouser/bass leader and 4wt for bream I still use 7ft over 9ft (7x/6x)due to water not as clear here as in clear stream in mountains.

Need the taper on the leader to make fly balance out when lands.

Only time I don't use leader is on intermediate or sinking tip.

I don't like loops and use nail knot. Each person likes to do it their way some like loops and some nail knot.
If I fly fish in grassy areas if got loops or knots with no glue over it chance of catching grass on it is high.
When made my leaders I would put glue over my knots to reduce the chance of them catching floating grass or leaves etc.
If not that knowledgeable about nail knots easiest ways is like eman said if fly line has loop put loop in top of leader and just attach that way.
Loops are easier and quicker to change out.

If I can recommend a local fly fishing website its laflyfish.com run by Catch Cormier he very helpful or just ask question get alot of answers.
They got guys on there most from local clubs like Redstick fly club in Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and one in Lake charles that can help you.

Size of leaders these 7xand 6x leaders 7ft and 9ft more for bream fishing/trout throwing light lures
7ft can turn a heavier lure like my beaded fly easier than a 9ft leader.

I like my bend head fly because it looks like minnow. Then bend at the top of the hook weights it down to ride like a minnow.
Deadly caught bass, bream, yellow bass, hybrid bass, rainbow trout, brown trout, scaliat, redfish, speckletrout on this fly.

Get some Braided loop connectersto attach the leader to your flyline

Geauxtigers1421 07-14-2012 02:33 PM

Alright guys, haven't had any time lately and just got back to it. I bought leader and tippit to attach to my line but have a problem. The leader has a loop tied already on the end to attach to the fly line. I looked up the loop knot for fly line and it all shows the loop on the fly line, not the leader. What knot should I be tying?

Man I had this same problem... A guy told me about a app... It's the app for Orvis Fly Fishing.. It shows you everything... In slow motion... Lol it's fly fishing for noobs!!!! Best app for beginners like myself.. It will show you many different ways for knots.. Good luck

PaulMyers 07-14-2012 05:33 PM

Do you have a loop on the end of your fly line also? If you do, all you do is slip loop to loop. It's made that way so you can change leader/tippit quickly.

jlsch1 07-17-2012 03:57 PM

Orvis use to be know zebco of fly fishing world.
Use to be beginners brand until moved something else.
Orvis line some products are good and others are ok.
Like older dxr fly reel and CFO reel made in England.
Rods they got nice ones and bad ones.

As far as loop to loop on leaders or line some mfg like Orvis and some cabelas brands fly lines and leaders have it.
If got loop to loop on fly line and leader quick way to change out leaders.
Put loop from leader over fly line and run tag end through fly line loop and pull straight.
You are now done tight lines.

If fly line don't have loop knot the best way to attach leader is cut off loop.
Then attach with nail knot.
