Hot Tip from Texas

I got the following topwater tip from Texas Fish and Game's daily e-mail.

Weird Fishing Tip #3 – Hot-dogs make excellent topwater baits. You don’t believe me? Try rigging one up, and see just how easy it is to walk-the-dog. Plus, it leaves an excellent oil trail. And when the fish want a little more splash, just slice off the rounded end and carve a concave face onto the ‘dog. (Warning: each hot dog is only good for one or two fish, so bring an entire package if you plan on fishing all day).

"W" 06-22-2012 08:48 AM

Only a idiot would even do a thing like that

I'm sure sheepshead love it

BaseballFisherman 06-22-2012 09:00 AM

I'm gonna do this for kicks and video it one day this fall when I get back on the lake. Do you think trout prefer pork or beef franks? Maybe kielbasa when targeting larger trout?

dayum my secrets out

The true secret is to get a footlong from Sonic... very durable and can make adjustments. I like to order the chilli and cheese coney. I think the chicago style is over kill and the trout turn off of the relish scent. basic chilli cheese marinade over night. cut slits on the side for water dispursion and cut the bottom half at a right angle on the nose.

I have seen others add ketchup to mimic blood... but to each his own. :help:

I totaly agree with this statement....I add two french fries in an X to the back "secured with a tooth pic" as a modified PROP bait. this seems to really get the lazy trout fired up and ready to feed.

and yes W this is also the best bait for sheepshead in the WORLD....well kept secret until now :work:

SaltERedneck 06-22-2012 10:19 AM

I like to customize my own baits.... this one here works like a corky or submerged bait... here is one of my finished batches. I added my own fish eyes to the bait... i am now taking orders

I'd say it is best to go with a Hebrew National dog.

I'm tryin' to figure out how to anchor the hook hangers and line tie.
They seem to hold better in turkey franks.

dmtfish 06-22-2012 01:56 PM

The dog is THE go to cobia bait...... If they won't bite a jig or bait....try a hot dog. (Tip from an old oilfield hand, thought he was full of ****e until i tried it myself)!

Can't imagine that it's that far fetched and don't see why it wouldn't work... Jalapenos work just fine...
