Ford Gas Mileage

I have an 06 F140 with a 5.4 2WD. I get terrible gas mileage, and I drive pretty easy. With a mixture of town and highway driving I get about 14.5. I changed the air filter and it didn't make a difference at all. Anyone else have this vehicle and get bad mileage? Should I run some fuel injector cleaner or will that even do anything? I love the truck, just wish it was had a little bit better fuel efficiency

CajunSaint 07-12-2012 11:32 AM

I've got a 2012 F150 I average 17mpg?

have ya tried changing the fuel filter??? and if u havent then try that and pour fuel injector before u put in a new fuel filter not air filter it doesnt really make a different. fuel filter does make a different in some ways due to clogged up lines or others reason. last resort wud be new fuel fiter and a k and n air filter. i have a k and n filter in my f-150 also i usually change my fuel filter every once a year.

I was gettin 13 miles per gallon in my truck til the rear end went out and had to be replaced, now I get 18. But mine is a GMC, don't know but might be worth goin get your rear end checked out.

marshrunner757 07-12-2012 11:48 AM

I also have the k&n. Not worth the money from my experience. I average about 15 MPG. Ford is just not great for fuel mileage.

Armand16 07-12-2012 11:49 AM

I put Lucas injector cleaner / fueal treatment once every 3 fill ups and I've noticed it helps a little

MattMigues 07-12-2012 12:13 PM

I have 06 F150 5.4 4x4 and I average 13.5 since I bought it. All I've owed is ford and they all are thirsty.

Yea it is. It's a solid truck though and I like it. I'll probably change the fuel filter and see if that helps

jkcckc2002 07-12-2012 12:39 PM

It has alot to do with the transmission in that year. I had an 08. It had the same tranny. Then in 09 or 10 they changed to a 6 speed.

"W" 07-12-2012 01:24 PM

I just bought a new Ford XLT 4x4 last week (2012)...... It gets awesome gas mileage vs my chevy I had,,

Coming to work which is about 340 R/T miles I avg 18.5 miles to gallon

In town running about 15.2

My chevy would get about 12-16 at best

Love my new truck...

PUREBAY2200 07-12-2012 01:36 PM

inchspinner 07-12-2012 01:51 PM

Got a new f150 with 5.0 no highway for me just in town and towing i get 16-17....

"W" 07-12-2012 01:52 PM

Yea 5.0..5.4 was old engine

PUREBAY2200 07-12-2012 01:56 PM

the 5.0 is the old mustang GT engine, its a beast!!

Tightline11 07-12-2012 01:57 PM

I have a 2010 F150 4x4 Lariat with the 5.4 and have found that certain fuels give less mileage than others. I was getting 13 to 15 mpg when using Kroger and SAMs club fuel in town and 17 to 19 mpg on the highway. I started using the Conoco station around the corner from my house and now I get 15 to 16 mpg in the city and 20 to 21 mpg on the highway

I have noticed how it could use another gear on the highway

my 05 f 150 was horrible on gas, but i did have it lifted and 35 in tires.
city was 13mpg
hwy 15mpg
towing @ 65 .......8mpg

mcjaredsandwich 07-12-2012 02:16 PM

At least its not a 97 dodge with the 5.9....I get 10 mpg city on a great day.

sammich

Keith_Stone 07-12-2012 02:23 PM

I have a 2012 F-150 4x4 with the Ecoboost engine. I get about 16 in town and about 20 to 21 hwy. with the cruise set.

cajunforeman 07-12-2012 02:43 PM

I have a 06 f150 with 33 Toyos on it and I'm getting 13. I haven't changed the fuel filter since I bought it bran new. I gues I need to do that soon. Heck I might even 13.5 after that!

PUREBAY2200 07-12-2012 02:51 PM

one mechanic said i could change out the rear end diff and get a gear ration for my needs.... but the price was unreal..... i wanna say like 3k after parts and labor.....

PUREBAY2200 07-12-2012 02:54 PM

my new toyota tundra has the big v8, loads of power. 18 mpg hwy 16 city. aint towed with it yet. its got 33 in tires and 20 in rims.
my buddy has the same truck , towes a 26 ft wellcraft(8,000 lbs loaded) and he gets 11 mpg @ 65 mph.
so im hoping a 2500-3000 lb bayboat load will give me about 13-14.....

I saw it parked at your house the other day. BLACK????????? Really? Didn't pick you for a truck in black. Good looking truck by the way!

nguidry 07-12-2012 03:22 PM

Ford = Fuel. My 2010 drinks the gas but pulls my boat like no other. Makes about 14 and that is a stretch. When I hook the boat to it I do not even check e mileage. Do not want to ruin a good fishing trip. I do have bigger tires and a level kit. My 2002 was the same way. No 4x4 with any power does much on gas milage

Thats just a Pic of what I got.....NO I dont have the Eco Boost

hubcap28 07-12-2012 03:46 PM

i had the same problem on my 04 lariat 5.4. Changed fuel filter and spark plugs. A lot more throttle response and a little better gas mileage. The truck does have 105,000. Was at 13mpg before change now avg 16mpg. I chopped old fuel filter open it was DIRTY

PUREBAY2200 07-12-2012 03:47 PM

Dub..... U got an Eco boost???
That's the 3.6 v6
Show us a pic of ur truck.

"W" I like your taste in trucks. Mine is an 07 with a 5.4. 113K miles and get about 15 mostly city and about 11 towing the boat. Had to get rid of my truck with the 4.6 after I bought the boat. It just wouldn't do it and got about 7 towing.

Matt G 07-12-2012 04:38 PM

Man y'all complaining about 13-16 mpg?? When I drove my old '87 Chevy with the 350 it would make 8 on the highway. Talk about I was excited to see my '02 Chevy get double digits (10mpg)!!! Now my '08 Chevy averages 13.5 city and I couldn't be happier. If you want fuel mileage buy a Prius.;) Although when my buddy pulled my boat with his Eco-Boost it made almost 15. I was really impressed with it.

That's ethanol for ya. No good for mileage at all.

fishinpox 07-12-2012 05:01 PM

weedeater 07-12-2012 07:36 PM

Eco boost does great towing!!
Towing power of a V8; mpg of a V6.

So you watched the commercial?

PUREBAY2200 07-12-2012 08:17 PM

Lol; no my neighbor has it. He pulls a work trailer; prob 6,000 lbs.
He gets 14 mph.
Pretty impressive.

calcutta37 07-12-2012 09:45 PM

I have the 2012 F150 w/ the ecoboost its pretty impressive pulling a boat. Power is crazy, u would not think it was a 6 cyl

PUREBAY2200 07-12-2012 09:50 PM

Calcutta; how many HP does the engine produce?
Me and my neighbor " raced" when I first got mine. I beat him to 70 mph but man I was shocked he was so close.

jlsch1 07-12-2012 10:11 PM

I use to work on fords after I trained at uti on ford trucks back in 1990's.
Don't even know if new vehicles use sensor like old ones since I don't work on them anymore.
Dirty mass air flow sensor use to be a culprit in all vehicles.
One thing I heard from my mechanic friend is changing plugs in newer fords are not fun.

Here link to explain mass air flow sensor.
Got to be careful thin wires.
http://www.fordf150.net/howto/clean-...low-sensor.php

jlsch1 07-13-2012 09:20 PM

I cleaned my father's F150 and my F150 today here is how simple it is.
I believe Ecoboost have MAP not MAF.

1. buy cleaner made for MAF around $7.99 at major auto parts store
Has directions on the bottle
Don't break wires on MAF they are not cheap to replace
typically screws take T-20 torque driver and should be the correct tool to take off the screws
http://i49.tinypic.com/2pr5jtl.jpg
2. This typically where your Mass air flow sensor is.
this what looks like on 2009 F150
Un snap the electrical harness connected to it
http://i47.tinypic.com/330vksm.jpg
3. This what some newer MAF look like.
Spray stuff in there DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT TOUCH THE SMALL WIRES
DO NOT TOUCH THE WIRES THEY ARE DELICATE AND YOU COULD BREAK THEM
THEN YOU WILL HAVE TO BUY A NEW SENSOR
Spray the stuff in the area where the wires are it will take off the dirt and clean up quickly
DO NOT USE CLEANER THAT HAS OILY RESIDUE USE PRODUCT MADE FOR CLEANING MASS AIRFLOW SENSORS
http://i50.tinypic.com/31353b9.jpg
THIS IS WHAT THE HOLE WILL LOOK LIKE WHEN TAKE OUT THE MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR
http://i47.tinypic.com/34rf02q.jpg

PRETTY SIMPLE NOW AND YOU SHOULD SEE BETTER ENGINE PERFORMANCE IN YOUR GAS MILEAGE!!!!!

UTI was a good school back then and I did learn alot. Having these skills helped pay my college along with Army GI bill.
Back in those days you could specialize in Ford or even get specific and go to school for just Ford trucks.
I didn't know squat about vehicles and I came out knowing alot more than people my age at time who were so called backyard mechanics.
What I hated was where I worked I knew newest techniques to fix new Fords and other guys my age who didn't have background screw stuff up. I would lose commissions taking time out of my day to fix their stuff. Worst part is they didn't keep up with buying right tools for job.

Yeah, I did meet some good looking young ladies in my class back when I was single.
They were like our buddies and we couldn't figure it out. They could drink us under the table and always get good looking women.
One day one of my instructors told us that was because we didn't have the right tools! That was funny, but you would have had to been there.

weedeater 07-13-2012 09:26 PM

2009 was older body with 5.4? I will have to try this on my 2005.

Dink 07-13-2012 09:38 PM

Screw all that......old 5.9 cummins.......ill out tow ya and have better milage

jlsch1 07-13-2012 09:47 PM

Weedeater I think yours has MAF.
Just please be careful easy to clean just don't break the wires.
Some of older ones will have two wires where you can see them.

I think its just 2012's have MAP which whole different can of worms.

I got out of business after I graduated and hated changing timing belts on 4cyl Ford Rangers.
4 hour from hell job. Heck those engines went back to Ford Pinto's.

Loved my friends that drove chevy's tell me how bad for inline 6's were.
Those were heck of an engine.

Top Dawg 07-13-2012 10:26 PM
