Mercury Pro XS

How many of y'all are running a Pro XS on an haynie or any other boat? How well do they hold up? And why a Pro XS over a yamaha four stroke.

Top Dawg 07-15-2012 10:58 AM

Here we go... Lol

Yamahas are junk that is why you see so many of them in repair shops.

250 Pro XS is a good fit for a 24ft haynie!

Neither get a Suzuki.... Lots of Haynes have a pro xs hanging on em though

ricky2110 07-15-2012 12:37 PM

I do not know anyone with a pro xs on their rig that did not have a problem at one point or another. lucky for them all these motors were under warrenty. "W" has an optimax and is the only person I asked with a new merc that is problem free. Thats one out of six people I talked to and he is the only one running the optimax, everyone else running the Pro xs in 225-250hp. Im in the market for a used boat and walked away from a fine shearwater because of the black pro xs on the back.

When I had my F150 yamaha all I did was put gas and regular yearly maint.

whunter29 07-15-2012 12:38 PM

Look how many older model Mercurys are still on the water and running and then look for older Yamahas I guarantee there are way more Mercurys than Yamahas. Yamaha = short lived expensive to maintain junk.

whunter29 07-15-2012 12:47 PM

I base my statements on what I have been told about their reliability from two different dealers mechanics who both told me there are much better motors out there than Yamahas. I was told their engines have corrosion issues which can get very expensive and that Yamaha doesn't try to fix their issues like other motor manufacturers.

jchief 07-15-2012 12:50 PM

I know several people that have over 1000 hours on their Yamahas with no problems.

Top Dawg 07-15-2012 12:50 PM

Look at what 90% of offshore charter boats run. I could care less either way. They're both good engines. I've always been a mercury fan. But if I were to buy a new boat it would have a yamaha 4 stroke on it.

Or a zuke

250 xs have more problems than 225 pro xs. 225 is way to go

My brother just took his off his boat (2008 Pro XS 250). It blew up 4 weeks ago at Spicers- calon flew 15 feet in air and flames shot out the side- loudest noise I ever heard. Women and children were running, after I shat in my pants we had to extinguish it. Motor was under warranty but mercury would not pay said a fuel float stuck causing gas and vapors to flood the calon. He made a claim and is now installing new Suzuki 225. Will be selling Pro XS, motor still starts, compression is good and lower unit looks great.

That is total BS....yamaha makes one of the most reliable motors on the market. I worked at a mercury warranty center for a few years. Opti's are known for compressor problems and coil packs. 90% of mercury's electronics are made in mexico and the quality control is not up to par. Don't get me wrong you can get a good opti that won't die,but they have more lemons compared to the rest.

What kind of problems y'all hearing about the 250's

jldsc 07-15-2012 08:58 PM

^^^yea this I would like to hear..Thats what Ive got ordered with my HO!! Im not going any less than a 250...It seems hard to believe a 250 would have more problems than a 225 when they are the same motor with different ECM's, possibly fuel injectors and exhaust tunner????

BayBolt23 07-15-2012 09:01 PM

Close to 200 hours on the 250 with zero issues! Hope I didn't jinx that biotch!!!!

ricky2110 07-15-2012 09:26 PM

from what i been hearing mainly coil issues, lower unit issues, and compressor issues. Another cat i work with had some fuel pressure issues not really sure exactly I would have to ask him but he said it was an expensive fix.

RigRatNoMeaux 07-15-2012 09:58 PM

Yamaha 250 SHO!!! It's a beast!!

"W" 07-15-2012 10:03 PM

I have just heard that the 250s tend to get put in shop more than 225s.. Not sure why but that is from the #1 mercury mechanics in Texas...

And the less trouble motors are optis ...not the pro Xs

ThePro XS seem to have more problems than the regular opti

That is what I was told by the Mercury shop Mechanic

SaltyShaw 07-15-2012 10:22 PM

I'm extremely satisfied with my 225 XS
Had a recall on my year motor brought it in change the coils and we been good to go since

sniper3726 07-15-2012 11:30 PM

Mercury changed coils about 3 years ago and then sometime after that they upgraded bearing design on compressors.

He has the 300 Verado and they (factory) changed the lower unit out for the heavier saltwater version.

That 300xs with the racing lower unit would scream!

RedXCross 07-16-2012 03:41 AM

This. X2,, 2011 250 Pro XS no issues and the most fuel efficient motor I have ran!

Kajundave 07-16-2012 06:55 PM

Ran it for 4 years, no issues. Very good on fuel and I would recommend the Optimax to anyone.

I run a 300 Verado. Zero complaints. It burns close to the same amount of fuel as my old 225 Optimax, just don't have to purchase oil anymore. The way I see it, when you hit the key and she fires up every single time, you got yourself a damn good engine no matter what the brand! Maybe I got lucky but, my Verado is sweet as hell!

Tonk hows that 300 V rod push the SW? is it a 22ft, or 24?

It does not have that hole shot power that my Optimax did but it pushes my Shearwater 25TE with ease. At 4,000rpm, I run about 35-36mph, 4,500rpm/40-41mph. My top speed is close to 6,300rpm/60mph. As long as I keep it under 4,500rpm's the fuel consumption is somewhere around 3-4 miles per gallon (calculated). My prop is a 19P Tempest plus. I've been playing around with a few different props and haven't found that magic prop yet. The shearwater runs different from my Triton as well. On my triton I would just trim the boat up to get on the pad and roll with it. The shearwater runs and drives like a bass boat more than a bay boat. It likes the boat to run more level than trimmed up on a pad. When running my in the sweet spot I keep the trim at .4-.6, other wise she will porpuse a little. I guess this is due to the weight of the 300 Verado. Though, when running wide open I can trim her up to 4.5, haulin azz. So far, I have only great things to say about the Verado 300. This thing is a beast.

Dont u have to run premium in verado?

Kajundave 07-21-2012 06:56 AM

I went on line last night the Opti is the most fuel efficient motor believe it or not! I was stunned to find the Yamaha 250 sho burns more fuel than the 250 pro XS

Not with the regular verado.....on the pro model if you don't run premium you actually loose horsepower and warranty. Not a huge fan of them but I must admit the power steering is bad to the bone.

Jadams 07-21-2012 08:29 AM

Yea I've drove one but that thing drank fuel
