Eco vs 5.0

I need alittle input, I am looking into buying another truck asap, I really Like the Ford F150 SuperCrew 4x4 3.5 Ecoboost or 5.0 engine, I will be pulling a camper that weights about 6,000 Max, if yall had to pick an engine witch one would it be.

Thanks,
David

How much will you be pulling the camper? Weekly, monthly, etc

DMG 07-25-2012 03:05 PM

Maybe twice a month.

skeeter10 07-25-2012 03:12 PM

I have a 2011 FX4 with the 3.5 ecoboost and I pull a 24ft bay boat around regularly without any problems. Doesn't weigh as much as your camper but I have been very impressed with the 3.5.

jchief 07-25-2012 03:16 PM

My son has a friend that regularly pulls a trailer about 4000 lbs. No problems with it. I think the towing capacity is like 9000 isn't it??

jlincecum 07-25-2012 03:28 PM

both are good choices. I have the 5.0 but havent pulled anything that heavy yet. Dont feel as though I would have a problem with it. Know plenty of people with both and havent heard of any issues with towing yet

fishaholic82 07-25-2012 03:56 PM

Either would be great choices just make sure you get the 3.73 automatic locking rear end. I have the Ecoboost and haven't had any issues.

kbolton 07-25-2012 03:58 PM

David,

The 5.0 in a 4x4 SuperCrew with 3.73 rear axle will pull 9,300 lbs.
The Ecoboost in a 4x4 SuperCrew with 3.55 or 3.73 rear axle is rated at 9,700 lbs. If you add the Max Trailer Tow Package, the Ecoboost will pull 11,300 lbs.

I've put thousands of miles on both engines. I've pulled heavy loads with both engines. Personally, I would go with the Ecoboost. I don't think the Max Tow Package would be that important in your case. Obviously, both engines are rated similarly, but the Ecoboost has the extra torque that makes pulling heavy loads a breeze. Call me if you have any other questions. Thanks.

Have a 2011 ecoboost, tows my 22' pathfinder no problem and I get a consistent 21 mpg on the highway. Love the truck and the only reason I would sell it was to get another ecoboost! Would tow your camper without breaking a sweat, like said above get the 3.73 gears.

TNP 07-25-2012 06:56 PM

what mileage are you guys getting with the 3.73 with the Ecoboost, I have a 2012 4X4 LWB W/5.0- 3,55 LRD-getting around 16mpg Great ride.....

dptrahan 07-25-2012 08:17 PM

I have a 2011 4x4 Offroad SWB Ecoboost with 3.73. Leveled with 34" BFG ATs. I get 14.5MPG in town and 20MPG on the highway. Backseat is one of the best features of this truck, especially when strapping in my little girl.

Top Dawg 07-25-2012 10:18 PM

I just bought a '10 model with the 5.4 I average around 17mpg. X1000 on the back seats.

Ecoboost has turbos which means more moving parts compared to the 5.0L. My question is how good have the turbos been holding up on the ecoboost. If good, ecoboost hands down.

kbolton 07-25-2012 11:01 PM

Our shop hasn't touched a single turbo yet. Very reliable motor. If you haven't seen it yet, Google "F150 Ecoboost torture test".

A Volkswagen will tow dang near whatever you want, stopping it is the problem!
Buddy of mine has the Eco, it's got some giddy up.

I purchases the Ecoboost a few months ago. I went from the 5.3 Chevy, the difference is amazing. Good mileage, lots of torque, quick get up..Love everything about mine. My wife has a 2010 tahoe, now she drives my truck everywhere when I am home from work...

Don't go home! ;)

I have 2012 Ecoboost with 3.73 that was bought from Bolton Ford. I tow a 7,200 lb toyhauler that when loaded is around 9,000 lbs give or take. The Ecoboost pulls it with no problem. My truck came equipped with the trailer brake module as well, so stopping the trailer is no problem at all. I would highly recommend the Ecoboost.

The only thing I wish I had were the stock 20" Fx4 wheels over the 18" Fx4 wheels. Other than that I have zero complaints.

bayouchub 07-26-2012 07:47 AM

I have a 2011 5.0. Love the truck but it gets horrible mpg when pulling my boat and not a day goes by that i dont have issues with the sync system.

Dink 07-26-2012 07:55 AM

If you have a wheel choice, get the 20's!! Putting new shoes on will be much cheaper than with the 18's. Doesnt make sense to me either, but its true......

cajunyoung 07-26-2012 09:55 AM

For those with the EcoBoost, if you have checked, what kind of mileage are you getting while pulling a camper or bay boat?

I have too she has; the money, the kids, and the keys to the castle, unfair world I know but what you gonna do....I was driving by the other day and saw you outside messing with boat, was gonna swing around and stop by but I had to hurry and pick up the rug rats from the day care...

BA1125 07-26-2012 12:42 PM

I get 10 pulling my toyhauler loaded running between 65 & 70

outdoorsman 07-26-2012 01:44 PM

I have the ecoboost, 4X4, 6 1/2' bed, 3.73 gears. the truck is a beast for a 1/2 ton. If you keep your foot off the floor it is also great on fuel. The heavyest load I have pulled is arround 8,500lbs. It pulled it with no proble at 65-75mph, no wind drag it was a very low load , even got 14mpg. Pulling my fema camper, with the wife and kids things, seams like everything they own, I get arround 10mpg, but it pulls it real good, can still spin tires. I do not have the max tow package, I did not like the side mirrors that it came with. I have 19,000 miles and have not had any complaints yet.

weedeater 07-26-2012 02:08 PM

Has anyone broke 100,000 miles yet on their ECO...... curious how they will do in long run.

I average around 14mpg's pulling my 22' triton.

catch.and.fillet 07-26-2012 06:27 PM

Buy now. Ford's looking at changing to aluminum body parts and an even smaller engine for the F150 to boost gas mileage. Wonder what will happen to towing capacity? Hope they wait til 2014 for this change.

fordfan 07-26-2012 09:20 PM

I just bought the 2012 4x4 with ecoboost and i love it. 3.73 locking diff. and it gets 20 mpg pulls great.

DMG 07-27-2012 04:33 PM

Ecoboost

Well lets see if i made the right choice, I just purchased the 2012 FX4 3.5L Ecoboost with 20" rims and it has 3.73 Electronic lock RR Axle:) Thanks for all the advice.

Slidellkid 07-27-2012 07:05 PM
