all in one shot, got a few more coming in that i picked up for cheaper

some of them are in need of new hooks, i know i can buy treble hooks from academy, but does any one know where i can pick up some of the little rings that hold the hooks to the lure, the parts that look like little tiny key rings

You might want to try to look in bass pro shop for that

Split rings.... academy or local tackle shop. Sulphur tackle sells em but thats kinda outta your way. Make sure you get something durable and compares sizes to whats on your other lures.

fishfighter 07-26-2012 08:05 AM

thanks

thanks for the tips, never had a need for them so i never looked for them, will check academy for them, if not will do some research on line

You need to put VMC hooks on them ,,, every bait I buy I remove the hooks right away and put VMC treble hooks
You can get all the sizes at Academy

fishfighter 07-26-2012 09:46 AM

cool

make sure you get the same size hook. The extra weight can change the action of the bait

A good pair of pliers makes it much easier. I can change out a Spook in about 2 minutes. Stout rings also make it easier. Once they open...they don't twist.

SGib 07-26-2012 10:10 AM

I swapped out to some owners trebles and they are the sharpest I've tried.

Gamakatsu should be illegal.

"W" 07-26-2012 10:27 AM

Gamakatsu are the sharpest , Owner hooks are good but none of them hold up to saltwater like the VMC hooks ..

Jeremy, are these Zara Spooks? If they are, you definitely wanna change the hooks whether they need changin' or not. A Zara is a freshwater bait and doesn't have saltwater hardware.

Too, if you must use nose rings on the line tie, get the oval ones. They will allow for more freedom of movement.....not as much as a loop knot, tho. ;)

All I ever used on Bombers were Gamakatsu EWG #4. Never had a problem with corrosion or breaking. If a trout touched it...that's his azz. To each his own, tho.

SaltERedneck 07-26-2012 10:42 AM

I am gonna have to try that loop not.

they are a mixture of spooks and something else, some are heddon some are excalibur, some others aren't tagged, most of them do have freshwater hooks but a few of them the excaliburs are labeled saltwater

i messed with them a little last night, some of the hooks are good and sharp(my fingers will tell you so) they should suffice for freshwater

SGib 07-26-2012 10:42 AM

My hookups have increased for sure. If gama is sharper that's not even fair.

Gamakatsu EWG's are sticky sharp. Most of the trout we hooked on 'em were hooked outside the mouth...because of that reason.

I re-painted some X-Raps for Inch. Those things have some weird-lookin' trebles on the rear. The center hook is bigger than the other two. They are pretty sharp, too. I think they are VMC. Not as sharp as a Gamakatsu, tho....IMO.

It's the only way to go...on any lure. :)

I use needle nose plyers and a knife.

Hold the ring with the plyers and then incert the knife [about 1/4 turn away from the end of the ring wire] to open up a gap so the new ring can be installed on the lure.

After you get the new ring stuck through the eye on the lure..... then you also put the new tribble hook on the split ring. Using the plyers, rotate the split ring so that the ring turns to mount the split ring and the new hook at the same time.

Those hooks on the back of X raps are sure set hooks... Don't think they are VMC but I put the VMC hooks on my spook jrs and your hook ups double with that hook for sure . I made plenty of believers about that hook

YellowMouth7 07-26-2012 03:15 PM

I use a Rapalla knot as my loop knot....for corkys and tops.....very easy and durable.....never lost a fish with it

Only reason I said "VMC" is because the box says "VMC"....just beneath "Sure Set".

The KVDs from Mustad are fantastic hooks. We looked at using them in a few different applications and cost was the prohibiting factor.

Prolly my fav to repaint. Just sand and spray right over it. Bone is a good base color.

Do not skimp on the split rings or this happens and you drop a 6 boatside.

What size are those vmc hooks "w"?Just thought about this but by putting one size larger hooks on a baby skitter or a spook jr. Would it walk in the water the same or would it change the presentation???

Off my head I can't recall size but I matched the hook size for the spook jr and skitterwalks

fishinpox 07-29-2012 05:37 PM

I'm a true believer in changing out the hooks . I swap with EWG trebles n hook up ratio is way better.

bearwash87 07-29-2012 06:13 PM

I have #2 ewg on my skitters and spooks

Don't really throw baby skitts but don't think it will matter much

Those VMC trailer hooks are on sale at the Academy in Lafayette for a $1.27 for a 4 pack. Just bought about 10 packs should be good for a long time.

SaltyShaw 08-01-2012 06:10 PM
