Took the kiddos to the Jetties last night to see if we could them on the STAR Tournament leader board for The youth gafftop division. (yes there is a gafftop category in the Texas STAR) We didn't catch any trophy gafftops, but we did catch a few blacktips.

I knew some Sharks were edible but I didn't realize black tip was one.

Make some fish tacos with that, thats the tradition fish used for it.

Shoot I'll take a lil shark like that over specks or reds any day of the week. They are fantastic. Best fish I've ever eaten fried.

I thought sharks had to be 54''

Caught one yesterday on a yellow swim tail gulp of all things!

I had some fried a few times and it is excellent!

Grill shark on the pit and you will never fry it again.

Gonna get one of those kids on a gafftop before its over with. Nice catch for those kids!!!

Before long the STAR people are gonna rename the youth gafftop division the "Bridge City Shootout"

24" is the minimum legal length and one shark per person per day in TX. We caught some bigger ones, which we released, I think the smaller ones taste better.

Any method to cleaning them? I always Let them
Bleed out before cleaning them.

I filet them just like a trout. I've never done anything different with them than I've done with specks. When we have get togethers at the house, we usually fry fish, and its always a mixed bag with several species all mixed together in chunks on cookie sheets. Whenever somebody comes across a chunk of fried shark, they almost always say "dang that good, what kind of fish is that?" Its very white and has a dense texture. More like chicken breast tenders than fish IMO

I don't belive I want to put a 54" shark in my little boat!
Wouldn't be enough room for the both of us!

My goal this year is to catch a 4ft plus shark in the kayak

I think this weekend would be a good weekend for to head to holly beach and start working on your goal. :-)

Are you being serious??????? We love it fried, but have not tried it on the grill. Any tips?

I blackened an atlantic sharpnose once on a skillet, and it tasted like a very tender steak. i thawed it in sugar and milk all day long before i cooked it to get the smell out. it worked, and it tasted amazing.

In Louisiana, the Atlantic sharp nose has no size limit. Is that the same thing as what we call a black tip??

Nah. Different species.

Atlantic sharpnose is kind of a brown color, with a very pointy nose. they are very common at the rock breakers between holly beach and johnson bayou this time of year on a north wind, or very calm day. with clear waters. they're notorious bait manglers, and stealers. they're tricky to hook, but if you have enough patience they can be caught pretty easily.
