Close call offshore this morning

After loading and backloading five lifts this morning, we hooked up the personnel basket to put some guys on the boat and then the boom winch decided to fail internally and the ratchet pawl assembly failed to catch with two men hanging 70 ft above the water. Luckily they are ok. This could have been real bad.

Wow.....glad everyone is safe. When a person leaves for work, they always expect to come home.

simplepeddler 08-05-2012 07:02 PM

No, I was in the tool room. But I damn sure felt it.

PUREBAY2200 08-05-2012 07:05 PM

I bet!!!
Im sure that crane operator was shaken up after!
Not to mention the guys swinging below....

Man I sure hope you guys have all your paperwork in line. Glad everyone is okay. I hate the fact none of our cranes have weight indicators, once you pull it off the boat you are committed.

Top Dawg 08-05-2012 07:08 PM

Man! Glad we weren't still tied up under. Glad everyone is ok. Sure looks a lot calmer out ther than it was yesterday evening. I feel like I got my azz whipped I'm so sore today.

Yep, they hit the water. They had already climbed up on the boat landing by the time I got to the production deck. Hell, after they dried off, they wanted to swing onto the boat and go run the field, but the area supervisor and HS&E sent them in to get checked out. They got back out this afternoon, and it hit them how close they came to getting seriously injured or killed. I have some troopers on my crew. Glad they're still here.

I have had 2 guys fall overboard in one day, no crane involved and I was on the platform still scary as hell. Them guys have "huevos grandes!"

PUREBAY2200 08-05-2012 09:05 PM

We were offshore back in may; and there was a crewboat come up to the rife we were at.
I see a rope drop down...... Then a bag fly of the rig to the boat.... Then a dude slides down the rope!!!
That was crazy!!
Waves were 2-3 ft..... Guess he figured the rope was easier??

calcutta37 08-06-2012 04:59 AM

Who owns that rig?

papap 08-06-2012 05:46 AM

Good to hear they were not hurt. thank goodness they were not over the boat when it failed. that is why i prefer swinging on to boat.

You don't like Oysters?

Frank Buck 08-07-2012 03:50 PM

They would still be cleaning that basket and putting booms on the water to catch the contaminates that I would have surely released instantaneously!!! That is my biggest fear!!! Back when I was on my tools, from time to time I would have to be lifted off of the crew boat onto the rig in that donut basket crap....My systolic blood pressure had to be 250+....I have goose bumps looking at the picture and imagining that....HOLEEE C_RAP....Guarantee you I would have been hugging expanded metal on the bottom of that basket like a cat screaming like a prom date with velcro undies....
