Mopped up at the Jetties over the weekend

Saturday was a figuring things out day. We bounced all over the place from the lake to west cove to the ship channel. Even tried to go offshore but it was way too rough. Started picking up a few at the jetties then the sharks and ladyfish showed up. We caught 22 keepers on saturday and a few reds.
Woke up Sunday morning and headed straight out to the same spot at the jetties we picked up our 22 trout the day before and started slinging Logs in the boat every cast. As the morning wore on and got hotter the fish started dropping lower and lower.
Finally when we started catching sharks under a cork and trash fish on the bottom we all switched to sliding cork rigs set at 6-8' deep we started hooking into specs again.
We were fishing in 14' of water and the trout stayed suspended at 8' the rest of the morning. Finished off our 3 man limit by 10:30 and catch and release till 11:30 then headed in. Caught 4 reds also.

We had boats beside us not really doing much and I don't think they knew we were using the sliding corks. Most boats left and headed back up the ship channel while we were steadily slinging them in no matter where we fished on the rocks.

Sounds like a heck of weekend of catching. Congrats!

Good job.

Why you bringing all the east side crap over here? Sliding corks are for sacalait fishing ;-)

Hey,I'm quite confident Norton Sand eels would catch on Lake Pontchartrain also.

Asterisk-Rich 08-06-2012 08:26 AM

DUCKGOGETTER 08-06-2012 08:37 AM

MOJO 08-06-2012 08:40 AM

Nice haul

ragincajun327 08-06-2012 09:00 AM

That is a great report. Thanks for the advice.

swamp snorkler 08-06-2012 09:01 AM

Thats nice. I've never fished the sliding cork method but I'd like to try that out some day.

What stops the cork from sliding all the way up?

SGib 08-06-2012 09:06 AM

Heck of a haul!

YellowMouth7 08-06-2012 09:11 AM

Very nice

CrazyD 08-06-2012 09:32 AM

Nice catch. Guess I am going to have to try out a sliding cork setup now. Been hesitant but have heard they work well.

Dude, literally everyone out there had corks, just not the right kind, lol.
Anyway,we did well Saturday using small split shots about 8" above the shrimp. This technique however did not work on Sunday.

Also, you need to put a name next to that phone number you got the text from the other day!

we did not try inside but saw several boats both days fishing the inside. Didn't get a chance to see how they were doing cause I can guarantee you that as soon as you took your eyes off your bait the damn cork would have gone under, haha.

Nahh,I know who he is but I was with ButchR and my friend Terry. Butch has a brother in law who has a very nice camp right off the ship channel where the camp with the Gold roof is. He's a very generous guy who lets us use his camp from time to time. He mainly uses it as a duck camp and has several leases in Hackberry.

I love fishing over there. It's a decent break from the Lake Pontchartrain freak show. I need to learn how to wade fish Big Lake during the spring and fall bad!!!!

we thought about it. I really have just given up on tourney fishing. I know some are benefits but I just think it's a whole different game than just fishing to have fun. No wild scamper to get on a spot. No hurrying back to not miss a weigh in.
I just don't have fun fishing tourneys anymore at all. Thanks for the invite though.

Slidellkid 08-06-2012 05:39 PM

Good report.

Do a google search for "slip bobber" there are a lot of instructions out there. You tie a bit of string around the main line at the point you want the bobber to stop. This determines the depth. It is very effective when you need to suspend a bait more than 5 ft down.

Jetties is where its at!!

For white perch in the dead of winter suspended deep, its the bestt way:)

Not sure what brand or anything, but you can buy 'bobber stops' at Wal Marks.

Here's what we do.Capt. Dumas taught me the proper way to rig a sliding cork for specs.

Go buy the sacalait slip cork strings that are wrapped around a small plastic tube.
Comes with little beads with holes in them.

Rig in this exact order. It's a pain to do and you may want to do it at home before heading out in the boat.

Start with braided line on your reel. Mono will allow the small string to slide easier and you don't want that.
Run your fishing line through the little plastic tube, pull the string that is wrapped around the tub upwards and off the tube.
Pull the little knot tight and clip off excess string hanging off the knot.

Next, pull the line through the little bead with the hole in it.

Next, get a decent sized unweighted cork with the plastic tube running through it(you know the old school kind that looks like a mini marker bouy) and run the fishing line through the plastic straw in the cork.

Next get a 1/4-1/2oz egg weight and run the string through it.

Next tie on a swivel.

Tie on about a foot of 20-30 lb. flouro leader material to the swivel.

Finish off with a good treble hook about 4/0

Thats it.

Set the first little string knot to the depth you want to fish and the little bead will hit that knot and the cork will not be able to get passed it.

Sorry for the long writeup but doing this procedure correctly will save a bunch of fishermen a lot of headache and frustration.
