Fished out of the Saltwater Barrier

1 Attachment(s)
Launched out of the Saltwater Barrier for a change of pace...

Fished the East powerline cut, lots of water coming out and good pickle bite... Ran up to 171, and fished down the West bank hitting the cuts... No water moving there but picked up a couple of keepers... All fish on red/black soft plastic creature baits, texas rigged with no weight...

Back on the trailer for 0930... Hot, still, and hazy this morning...

Just to the North Paul... Another month or so and I'll start the annual search for specks from Prien to the North, the barrier is on my short list once things cool off... Last year we did so well in Lake Charles that we didnt run upstream much past I-10...

I can't wait for that first cold front !!!

So the prien to lake charles area does well during the fall? This is really my first year fishing saltwater...

bull1134 08-12-2012 07:15 PM

got that one on a gulp shrimp on the bottom. good luck in a yak, I really didn't want to get it in my boat with plenty of room, once you see that mouth open, and all those teeth, kinda makes you not want to mess with him!

When the water gets salty the trout will move up to the Salt water barrier area. Watch this link and when it gets up to about 8 ppt, trout should start to show up at the SWB. The current reading is ~2.5, so it will 2 or 3 more weeks.....or longer if we get more rain NE of Lake Charles.

Some trout are in the I-210 area now.

I am up for challenge and chance to learn how to clean them

bull1134 08-13-2012 08:51 PM

they are easy to clean really, take a hatchet and lay them belly down. take the hatchet and go down from back to front taking scales and skin down the top of the back, once it's off, run your knife down each side then pull the whole deal out. you can cut the meat into steaks (my fav on the grill) or chunk the meat and make gar balls, either way, they're damn good eatin.

and by the way, when you kill em, make sure you hit where the skull meets the scales, you could beat a hole in his skull and do nothin but piss him off!

SuthernBowRush 08-15-2012 05:14 PM

There was some talk back there about specs at the SWB...I been trying to catch up to the reds around that area...not much luck. Catchin a few throwbacks...but not like what I have heard. Fishin gold and silver, Johnson sprite spoons, weed less wobble minnows and spinnerbaits w soft plastics...

Fishin point where old river meets channel at SWB, that bank...and the left bank cuts headed towards lc from SWB. Also, near port in lc. Phew....tough. :help:

Those bait should catch a Red somewhere in that area.

During the summer when it is hot, sometimes they like a very slow presentation and let the bait stay down near the bottom. Fish the dropoffs.

chief paul 08-16-2012 06:58 AM

Am I looking at that site wrong ? Looks like 9ppt. salinity

SuthernBowRush 08-16-2012 01:15 PM

yeah, looks like it jumped from 2-3 all the way to 8ish in one day
