Chokes

I've been shooting a normal imp cyl choke alll my life 15yrs + and think of getting an extended range choke. How big is the pattern difference and how hard is it to adjust. I shoot ic for everything and deadly at short range but long range not so efficient. Tia

bgizzle 09-06-2012 08:42 AM

What's the difference between ported and non ported?

CaptainBG 09-06-2012 08:51 AM

Ported reduces recoil an there alil bit more expensive, so IMO there's no diff between ported r non ported unless u want to reduce some recoil.

cmcnabb 09-06-2012 09:02 AM

I didn't believe the hype until I shot someone elses gun that had a patternmaster. It really does make an excellent pattern with steel shot. If you decide to go that route though, DO NOT get the extended range. It was made for one thing, skybusting. The mid range is perfect IMO. Mine is not ported, but I honestly don't think porting does anything

bgizzle 09-06-2012 03:49 PM

From shooting an ic all my days then going to pm mid range how much more on my game do I need to expect to be from devoting birds to 50yd flybys? Is extreme difference should I practice ALOT? I'm think of getting one tomorrow if I can get enough reviews and good feedback!!

cmcnabb 09-06-2012 04:10 PM

I doubt it's going to be a huge difference. As far as praticing, I wouldn't worry about that. The reason I like my choke is because of the uniform pattern. With my factory choke, there were big gaps in my pattern. With this patternmaster, its very uniform. Even for shooting decoying birds, the mid-range is not too tight. You have to be on, but in my opinion you need to be on no matter what choke you shoot

bgizzle 09-06-2012 07:19 PM

That's basically what I was asking. If I shoot like I normally shoot with ic choke would I be ok as far where i put the bead on the bird, or should I need to makes adjustments on catching a bead or just catch a bead like always did.

bgizzle 09-06-2012 07:21 PM

Dont get me wrong I've shot birds at 50yds with improved cyl before but lately I've been told a mid range pm makes remarkable difference especially for weary mallards and specks. True?

SULPHITE 09-06-2012 07:24 PM

I likem for that last shot on group of 40+ teal...pick me a straggler out an lead the piss out'em...;)

I do not sky bust. Hate that

cmcnabb 09-06-2012 07:41 PM

Don't think, just point. Your brain will move your arms where they need to be. You will be fine swapping chokes

Kenner18 09-06-2012 08:42 PM

I use the Patternmaster extended range and its a winner in my book . Only thing is if they are really close you dont have to worry about cleaning them ,it does it for you .

bgizzle 09-06-2012 09:34 PM

That's a Lil too tight for me on decoying birds. Ill check out the mid range and the hevi shot. I'm thinking of briley 2.. Anyone own one or know someone who does?

I have the mid range hevi shot which is ported on all of my guns. As you guys know I am new to the sport but my shots have improved greatly and I have fewer cripples. I did not notice a difference in recoil.

bgizzle 09-07-2012 08:36 AM

Wow. I've done that to enough birds with an ic choke I could imagine pm long range. Ida had a wing left..lol

I have tried all the different after market chokes from Duck Commander to Patternmaster and I always end up back at my trusty ole "stock" modified choke. Got a cabinet full of after market chokes that I don't even use. Maybe you should try just using a modified instead of improved cylinder. Improved cyl more for skeet and doves IMO. Only time I might use my pattermaster is later in the season when the ducks aren't working as well.

I only have one Patternmaster for the newer generation Benelli thread patterns (SBE II and Vinci). I wanna keep that one. But I have at least 1 Patternmaster and 1 Duck Commander for the older guns (SBE I and M1) that I would be willing to part with. Sucks that they changed the thread patterns. My M1 has a modified choke permanently stuck in it. :pissed: I have tried everything to get it out. Only thing they could do is cut it out so it's staying.

Top Dawg 09-07-2012 11:38 AM

Dang. I have he newer

bgizzle 09-07-2012 03:23 PM

I've always hunted in the intercostal marsh where the duck are always in yo face. No need for tight pattern and my teacher always told me to shoot IC and nothing else cuz that's what worked for him for 30yrs so I did and I can shoot very well with it. Now I hunt ricefields and notice further shots have to be made to kill birds because bubba in the next blind is gonna call em off you or sky bust at geese that are migrating if you don't hurry and finish your birds so I'll let a speck make 3passes if he don't finish and he comes directly over me in decent range I'm trying to make him meet my pattern. By the guys I'm leasing with this yr I've never hunted in the same lease with and seem to be considerate and knowledgable. We will see come November. Teal don't give a crap what's going on so I don't either I just try n decoy big flocks better than others by strategy

specktator 09-07-2012 04:39 PM

Rice field blinds are the only times I would use a Patternmaster. Will definitely help in those cases. Usually a lot longer 2nd and 3rd shots in rice fields/pit blinds.

bgizzle 09-07-2012 09:11 PM

Yea there's 50-100acres they can land where in a marsh 2max mostly 1-1.5 and smaller

beachblind 09-08-2012 11:50 PM

Shot Briley's choke tubes for years awesome chokes and pattern steel shot really well, and there customer service is second to none, they are based out of Houston Texas and usually your choke will be here in two days. The have several models but have been shooting there duck choke which is basically a Light Modified choke. Learned about them severel years ago at the gun range in Lc, guys with 15,000 dollar pirazzia's and kriegoffs had Briley chokes in there guns. Figured if they was using them in there prize guns that there had to be something to them. Have been using them ever since, with good success. Make them for any guns. I use the ported chokes for less recoil and muzzle jump.
