What is the best knife for cleaning redfish? Burned up two electric fisherman yesterday on them.

Moody 09-30-2012 03:27 PM

Mr twister saltwater piranha works for me

mriguy 09-30-2012 03:29 PM

Black & Decker

LPfishnTIM 09-30-2012 03:47 PM

same here no electric on reds or drum.

Nitramiii 09-30-2012 04:05 PM

American Angler. I think it has metal gears.

Duck Butter 09-30-2012 04:13 PM

I get a serrated kitchen knife and just cut right behind the gills down to the bone on both sides then use the electric knife to fillet it from there. Works really good, the first cut is what seems to dull my knives and this works well. You eliminate cutting thru the tough scales. Or just get a Dexter and don't worry bout it

Jellyworm 09-30-2012 05:39 PM

I second American Angler! After burning up two MisterTwisters I used the AA and it is night and Day better.

Tomball Tiger 09-30-2012 06:15 PM

American Angler, IMO........And I used to be a Mr Twister disciple.

swamp snorkler 09-30-2012 06:17 PM

Sawzall with a long blade

capt hoop 09-30-2012 06:23 PM

Dexter roast beef slicer is the best for cleaning redfish. Hamilton beach makes the best electric knife.

YellaBlazer 09-30-2012 06:26 PM

Blue Tournament Choice knife from Academy. Open the box and throw away the blades. Buy a set of Mr. Twister blades with the cutting point. Works on any size redfish.

trtdds 09-30-2012 06:29 PM

My vote goes to American Angler. They make a couple size blades and the big one works well on Reds.

budndawn 09-30-2012 07:32 PM

American angler for sure

thomas1950 09-30-2012 07:36 PM

Throw away your electric knife. Check out this guy cleaning a 30 lb redfish in 18 seconds with a good ole fashioned sharp knife. Nothing to it! :)

calcutta37 09-30-2012 08:41 PM

Get you a bubba blade they are sharp and clean reds with no prob..

Riceland 09-30-2012 08:50 PM

for reds and similar, dexter serrated, then mr twister elec knife to finish off. Cleaned manny fish with both, no problems yet

latravcha 09-30-2012 09:06 PM

I quit using electrics a few years. I use a dexter serrades to cut reds fom the bone then finish off with a 9 inch dexter. I use just the 9 inch dexter on trout.

LPfishnTIM 10-01-2012 02:14 AM

really I started using a filet knife about a year ago, always used electric, but with a regular filet knife your filets turn out to look neater and cleaner cut. and after doing it for a while, if you keep your blade sharp you can still clean just as fast.

What kind of knife do you use, pretty much all I clean is catfish and I had an old knife that seemed stay sharper longer and take an edge easier it walked off on me one day and I bought 8" rap aka I believe and it's easy to put an edge on but it dulls out after pretty much every fish

Get a dexter. Cheeper and better then a bubba. You can fillet a red in one slice. As well as snapper or sheepshead. Great all around fillet knives.

I have found that the Mister Twister Saltwater Piranha w/11" blade works well filleting redfish and the like!

Top Dawg 10-01-2012 08:49 AM

Get a Dexter-Russell http://www.dexter-russell.com/Item_D...id=476&line=SG , our local Hardware store carries them, They about $20-30. Keeps an edge and easy to sharpen. My wifes uncle is retired and fishes catfish for extra money and to pass his time and its all he uses. He doesn't skin his catfish either, he filets everything.

Msucowpoke51 10-01-2012 09:50 AM

I use the rapala electric knife from academy and so far so good, i havent had it too long though.

That's how I do it w/ reds, drum and sheepies. Extends the life of the knife. I use a Hamilton Beach.

LPfishnTIM 10-01-2012 07:03 PM

I have a gerber filet knife, a Rapala filet knife and dexter, I got a rapala electric knife its good for trout but gets hot fast I also don't like the curved blades on it, and I got 2 saltwater mr. twisters.

swamp snorkler 10-02-2012 12:36 PM

you don't need an electric knife........

SULPHITE 11-05-2012 08:17 PM

What type of sharpner or what works best to keep ur dexter knife sharp?

jchief 11-05-2012 08:19 PM

Dexter makes a sharpener. Don't know if or how well it works though.

SULPHITE 11-05-2012 08:20 PM

Looking to pick up a dexter or comparable knife at academy for reds and want to pick up a sharpener too

Ray 11-05-2012 08:29 PM

I got tired of the Mister Twisters breaking. Went thru 3 of them in the past year.
I stole my wife's Hamilton Beach and it fillets dang good.

SULPHITE 11-05-2012 08:37 PM

Agree. I been using hamilton beach now for 2 years and work awesome. I got 4 of them- cut like butter. I got several mister twister and motors seem to be getting weaker and weaker. Opened one out of package last week and motor kept bogging down- switched to hamilton beach and worked great.

Well what I do is throw all the redfish back. Has really really prolonged the life of my electric knife. Only clean flounder and trout now. Better eating fish than reds anyway.

BigChaf 11-06-2012 09:23 AM

Chain Saw

Bluechip 11-06-2012 09:59 AM

Sawzall ...

jchief 11-06-2012 10:01 AM

The Dexters are nice, hold an edge very good, but take some getting used to. CaptB on the site can slice one up quick. I haven't used mine enough. I don't keep them that often any more.

Ray 11-06-2012 10:01 AM

You can get a cheap battery operated saw-all at Harbor Freight for about $30 for Reds.
I don't cut thru the ribs on Reds. That will ruin your blades.
With the Reds back towards you, start at the tail and run the blades up till you hit the ribs,
then run around the ribs till you get to the head. Cut from the top of the head down till you
hit ribs again. Then fold over and cut the skin.
You will have a fillet with skin on, or you can then fillet the skin off.

Only bad thing about the Hamilton Beach is the blades are not pointed. You can't punch thru a Reds tough skin.
But they are good knives anyway,

The Mister Twister problem I have is one side of the knife always goes bad. One blade is running and the other isn't.
I don't notice, until I put my fingers on the little plastic thing on the blade and notice one blade isn't moving.
It makes you think the blades are dull and I end up pushing thru the skin, messing up the meat.
