which line?

Been using Cajun Red for a couple of years, but not happy with its memory and apparent "backlashability". I've used PowerPro braided line also, but not completely satisfied with that either. What line do y'all find is the best for a baitcaster? Just curious if there is a clear favorite among the group.

I'm a fan of Berkeley big game but also have heard good things about Ande tournament

redaddiction 11-12-2012 02:06 PM

12lb big game

bambam075 11-12-2012 04:58 PM

Berkley big game 12 lb test . Can catch antthing on this stuff. I tried the cajun red and i had the same problems with the memory and the back lashes. Glad its not just me that thinks this .

jpeff31787 11-12-2012 05:04 PM

I've also always heard good thing about big game, but I used pline halo 14lb test... I use it for bass too thats why i have the heavier test

j.e.hagen 11-12-2012 05:23 PM

12-14 pound big game is the best all around line to me I use power pro in the marshes and once u get used to it you can't beet it in a marsh

Duck Butter 11-12-2012 05:27 PM

I used the 6lb Cajun Red for white perch when it first came out and never bought any more of it for the same reasons but on a spinning reel. For my jig poles now I use Stren in the hi vis yellow and tie a 2' leader on it so I can see the yellow line move. I started thinking about that red line and how it was supposed to disappear under water because red is the first color that 'goes' when you get down to a certain depth, i.e. red snapper don't look red at all past about 10' down. Then I started thinking that lure makers were selling bleeding shad and bleeding mullet with red stripes on it to appear it was bleeding. Well, you can't have it both ways, you can't say red line disappears and red spots on a bait make it look attractive to fish underwater. To answer your question, I use 8lb diameter 30 lb test braid now for saltwater and tie a 2' 30 lb. fluorocarbon leader on the end.

I been using 12# Trilene XL Armor coated and absolutely love it for Top waters and jigs with my Cronarch. It stays a float good with topwater baits and is just as strong as big game IMO. I only run 10# Power Pro on the Spincast. No wind knots as long as you put it on wet and tight. ( ha ha. Wet and tight) Big Game is great also. I ran it forever and it's freakishly strong for 12# but it does have a little memory but it comes on a big spool and is cheap comparably so just respool. XL Armorcoat is awesome tho.

Clampy 11-12-2012 06:17 PM

Cajun Red is the absolute worst line and I'm ashamed to admit I bought a spool at one point. Ps Dura Cast Braid sucks also IMO. After running power pro I don't see how other braid companies stay a float. I've tried so many and always came running back to the PP. but I can't stad to throw any treble hooked baits with anything but mono.

Montauk17 11-12-2012 06:50 PM

I use stren original and stren sonic braid

meaux fishing 11-12-2012 06:54 PM

I use stren original and suffix braid

dhebert307 11-12-2012 06:55 PM

Not a fan of cajun red either. Just spooled a couple reels with suffix siege 17# like it so far.

Duck Butter 11-12-2012 07:01 PM

Where is the cajun red line made? Is the person who invented it from Louisiana

sniper3726 11-12-2012 07:08 PM

X 5 6 or 7. Berkley Big Game

biggun 11-12-2012 07:17 PM

It all depends what Ur fishing for??? Saltwater. Hands Down. Suffix Seige 12 & 14# in the green..

Great Abrasion resistance.. and Floro: I use Vicious floor in the 15# for reds mostly..

Seagur Abriz X floro is also Top of the line.. Pricey .. But Worth every penny...

Very Little memory on all the above lines..

Clampy 11-12-2012 08:05 PM

Suffix siege mono is really good also. The abrasion resistance is second to non for mono.

P&Pguide 11-12-2012 08:18 PM

Playing with some Power Pro Super 8 Slick, so far good, price is ridiculous , cast a mile

fishnla 11-12-2012 08:23 PM

berkley trilene 100% florocarbon for most everything other than topwater.

cmcnabb 11-12-2012 08:23 PM

I had a friend tell me red line disappears in 6 foot of water and he tested it in his pool. I said BS show me and I'll believe. Needless to say, at the bottom of an 8ft pool you can still see the red line just fine

Duck Butter 11-12-2012 08:38 PM

Had to look it up, these are the depths at which the colors fade, the whole Roy G Biv thing and all

Red - 15ft
Orange - 25ft
Yellow - 35-45ft
Green - 70-75ft

Keywest18 11-12-2012 08:48 PM

I use big game and suffix mono on my baitcastt reels. 12-15lb. The suffix 12lb has really surprised me

jchief 11-12-2012 09:45 PM

Big Game, Suffix (mono and braid)

Reelman2 11-12-2012 10:31 PM

Try line butter on your line about every three trips and you will see a difference. It works like no other.

Berkley Big Game and Ande Back Country. Good stuff for the price!

cajun bill 11-13-2012 05:50 PM

thanks to all

Bought a large spool of Berkley Big Game today and also a small spool of Berkley 100% flourocarbon just for kicks. I use the larger flouro for mangroves, never thought of using the smaller test for specks and reds. Great forum. Thanks to all who responded, but it appears that Big Game is the "go to" line according to those who responded.

MathGeek 11-13-2012 05:59 PM

All my reels are power pro 30, 40, or 50 lb. I have used Berkley 100% fluorocarbon (main line) for leaders, and it works fine. I've taken a liking to Ande fluorocarbon for leader material, so that's probably what I'll buy from now on.

redneck 11-13-2012 09:06 PM

Hey, do you use a different line on spincasting reel for specks and reds? Thanks.

Captain Brian 11-15-2012 07:36 PM

It's taken me awhile to warm up to flourocarbon but I'm sold Berkeley 100% in 15 is "the business"for deep jigging, much better direct contact with your lure,It's ridiculous the fish I would miss fishing deep with mono.

Catcher'sMitt 11-16-2012 11:10 AM

most everything, except the last post by cap Brian is old school stuff. I have been hearing and reading about lots of good new stuff. Nobody has tried any? I have been using big game 30 and triple fish 15 camo. I have bulk spools of both. One report from a friend of mine, Mark B., that is a skeeter team bass fisherman, he went trout fishing with a guide. they were catching good, and Mark had to retie his mono often. he noticed the guide was not retying. he asked him about it and he said yea, i used to have to retie all the time like you are doing. I switched to fluorocarbon a year or so ago and hardly ever have to retie because it is so much more abrasion resistant. Another friend has switched to a copolyomer line and he says it is the bomb. waiting on a text from him of the name. He catches more specks than anybody but the guides and only because he doesn't go everyday. Y'all know his camp, it is the one on the weir on south end of BL.

The co-polymer line is Gamma.

kktnt 11-16-2012 12:14 PM

line to try

I fish with power pro for awhile and was like you not completely satisfied. I have recently tried the power pro super 8 slick 30 lb. I love this line. it is a smoother cast and line and gets better as you use it. give it a shot and let me know what you think.
