Flounder at the ferry

First post here, so be nice!

I've been hearing conflicting reports on flounder at the Cameron Ferry, so it was suggested I join and ask y'all. Any reports?

Thanks in advance.

I know there is a land owner who has been pressing charges for people trespassing on his land to access water ..

Don't know if they are catching fish but they catching fines

PistolPackinMama 11-13-2012 07:01 PM

Thanks for your quick reply. I was reading up on some older posts on this forum and didn't know if the waders that someone was complaining about included those right there at the boat launch or not. Where are these fines being given? I haven't been out there since last year and I don't remember seeing posted signs at the boat launch (this is the one that is chained and locked).

Some where around the ferry area ....not sure exact location but I'm sure its on the North side which is the easiest to access from road .

The local Sheriff dept had to go yesterday because the land owner called him. They had 10 cars parked and they were going on his land to get in water . They also had left trash all over for the last week

southern151 11-13-2012 07:20 PM

That last sentence is what kills me! A couple ruin it for the rest!

PistolPackinMama 11-13-2012 07:22 PM

There's a huge parking lot where I'm talking about.

And, southern, I agree.

"W" 11-13-2012 07:22 PM

99.9% Are from Texas ... Who wade the channel for Flounder from what I hear. I have not been down there to see with my own eyes but I know a lot of buttons are getting pushed

PistolPackinMama 11-13-2012 07:28 PM

We must be talking about two different ferries? This is the one by Monkey Island. There are some pretty boys out there, with their fancy fishing shirts, but lots of locals there.

W, any way you can guide me to another forum where I can read about buttons getting pushed? Want to make sure we're talking about the same place.

Dink 11-13-2012 08:53 PM

PistolPackinMama 11-13-2012 09:04 PM

Hi, T! It's me!

Your brother said he's going out there this weekend. If I can find someone to ride in the truck with me, I'm going. Everyone is being so tight-lipped!

(FYI: I made a call tonight for y'all to do some work for us. Might see you in the next couple days out at that job site on Cameron.)

PistolPackinMama 11-13-2012 09:26 PM

I think maybe the tickets are being given by the pogie plant.

Dink 11-13-2012 09:27 PM

Hueys Baptism is Sunday. We arent going. Ill let ya know when we do

Jadams 11-13-2012 09:28 PM

Kojack said they wrote over 40 criminal tresspassing tickets today

PistolPackinMama 11-13-2012 09:33 PM

Jadams....where? At the pogie plant? Or right there by the boat launch?

Jadams 11-13-2012 09:44 PM

By pogey plant

PistolPackinMama 11-13-2012 09:45 PM

I guess I can call the SO tomorrow and ask. Thanks for the input, y'all.

PistolPackinMama 11-13-2012 09:45 PM

Sweet. Thanks, jadams. Just what I needed to hear!

"W" 11-13-2012 11:39 PM

I was told the land lords hired a guy to patrol area

Big Kahunaz 11-14-2012 12:10 AM

Park aside GIS dock and wade into the canal by the captains quarters. Bout the only way I think u can get around it without problems. Good luck

cduhon 11-14-2012 02:02 AM

I've seen the game wardens and cameron sheriff both down there alot already. Wardens were checking license and fish, sheriff was strict on parking
and trespassing. Not sure how many tickets written but they have been down there. I have to agree about the trash though, last year was crazy the people and trash they left behind.

W and Cduhon, where re y'all talking about? At the boat launch? BigK, thanks, but I think the boat launch is fine. If its not, I'll try your advice.

Ray 11-14-2012 08:08 AM

You can only park at the ferry landing public parking lot.
But you have to cross private property to get to a wading spot.
The other places are not public.
They owners are pissed cause of tearing up the property.
There is only one ferry in Cameron.

PistolPackinMama 11-14-2012 08:13 AM

Someone with some answers! Are they ticketing those who are fishing ON the boat launch, Ray?

Ray 11-14-2012 08:15 AM

No tickets on public launch.

PistolPackinMama 11-14-2012 08:18 AM

Thank you! You've been very helpful.

Same as what Ray said. Only one ferry down there right past the Pogey plant. All the parking you want but most people walk north to wade fish which is private property. If you fished at the Ferry that is fine, just cannot cross north across the private property. People were walking 500 yards down the bank north last year across a fence and private property. Other people were fishing at the curve near the drain ditch but were parking on private property. You cannot park anywhere along side the hwy. Most of where people were parking is private property and people have trashed it. Trash, huge holes, beer cans, dead fish, etc..... The amount of people fishing down there seems to double every year. It got crazy last year all the people. Guess the property owners got tired of the mess and starting enforcing their property lines.

You can fish at the boat launch and all along the shore near the launch but just show respect to boat owners trying to launch. Launched there many times and people fishing the boat launch think they own it.

PistolPackinMama 11-14-2012 08:48 AM

We've always been respectful of those launching there. Not many - they all seemed to be oyster boats or crab boats.

bigtuna895 11-14-2012 11:23 AM

Em... That was when the landing was restricted to commercial use only.... The landing has been reopened to the general public and is busy as all get out now... So I would not concentrate on the boat ramp this time like we did last year.... too much traffic.... And be wary of trash to get hung up on... Bring plenty of jig heads....

PistolPackinMama 11-14-2012 11:36 AM

Thanks, Jake. I took note of everything you told me last night. If I can find someone to ride with me on Sunday, I'll be out there.

bmac 11-14-2012 11:37 AM

Sounds like a kayak would come in handy there.

biggun 11-14-2012 05:02 PM

Hi Guys.. I fished for flounders Friday in the wind.. When I say they had over a 100 people wading and fishing from the bank. They did easily... From the Pogie plt north to the rocks about 100 or so yards north of the west boat launch..

Everyone catching and some keeping more than their limit.... Alot of Texas boats of all sizes @ the West Launch..

For some reason the flounder WANT the bait swam up the ledge not from the bank and out to the channel..

I was fishing a glow swimming gulp minnow and a friend was fishing a WHITE Swimming gulp minnow.. I had none on one drift he had 4 flounder..

Friday the flounder weren't big.. I think with this front the big girls will be come out and down...

I agree with the trash comment.. It's out of hand.. They where also wading south of the pogie plt by the Pilot boats on the west side..

A friend was catching better size in the ditches on the north side of the road going to Holly Beach...

Alot of waders are using double rigs with one white and one chartuse.

I spoke to alot of fisherman as I would drift the west side of the channel from pogie plt to just north of the ferry.. I'd say 70- 75% were from Texas...

Never asked them if they had a LA. Fishing License.. Would like to know want percentage DIDN'T have a license..

I'm 150 miles south of the River until Next Thursday. Just came out today..

I'll be back @ it in Cameron trying to get a few flounder before it the run ends next week..

PistolPackinMama 11-14-2012 06:18 PM

Thanks for a most excellent report biggun. Looks like weekends are no good for wading, then.

"W" 11-14-2012 06:32 PM

Got a Text from a guide today... He knows of 13 trespassing tickets given today and 4 over the limit ...
All Texas fisherman

"H" 11-14-2012 06:39 PM

No way Im fightin a crowd like that!

PistolPackinMama 11-14-2012 08:33 PM

Doggone you, inchspinner. I had pretty much talked myself out of going.

biggun 11-14-2012 09:04 PM

Well I've seen with my own eyes people keeping very small flounder .. If they aren't @ least 13'' I won't keep them.. And that's if they are running small.. I normally give that size away and only keep the larger ones. DOOR MATS...

jchief 11-14-2012 09:10 PM

If y'all want to debate about who is trashing the place go ahead, but stop the bashing of the Texans.

One and only warning.

You are right, Louisiana does a great job of trashing the state without the help of Texans. I have spent the last 10 years in Texas after spending the first 25 years of my life in Louisiana and there is no comparison. Go look at any public fishing area in Texas and compare it to public fishing areas in Louisiana. I can remember the magots getting so bad in Rockafeller they shut down the weirs.

Lol...... Sad but true. We are our worse enemy.

Duck Butter 11-14-2012 09:23 PM

Louisiana is filled with trash and we have just gotten used to it over time and don't notice it. If you are ever away from Louisiana for a long time and come back you can see it. Look in any body of water and there is trash all over the place. I wish the littering laws would be enforced more. It is sad that when you go to Rockefeller there are 2 trashcans within 50 feet of the docks yet trash is all over the place, people are just lazy and trashy, sorry for the hijack

"W" 11-14-2012 09:26 PM

So we can't debate who is getting public fines and tickets ???

What has free fishing site become .....

yuppies

TNP 11-14-2012 09:27 PM

Moral behavior

Thank You jchief. I am a Texan. I have been fishing in LA for 8 years. Love the people, the state and the fishing. We have a place in Hackberry and buy our boats, tackle, groceries and BEER in Louisiana. We support the State and the economy. I will be the first guy out of the truck or the boat to choke someone trashing anything. Texas, Louisiana or USA!!! You guy's need to be sure and seperate the good from the bad, doesn't matter where your from, it matters what you do or don't do. See you on the water!!

Start your own thread about "public fines and tickets". This thread is about fishing for flounder.

PistolPackinMama 11-14-2012 09:40 PM

Not really, Paul. I think I got a good three posts of actual flounder fishing info. But, I agree with you.

Didn't a dam out of Joseph's Harbor get shut down last year because of jerks castnetting and leaving their bycatch on the banks? That's just obnoxious.

All of Rockefeller got shutdown a year or 2 ago because of nasty conditions. The same thing happened at Sabine NR because of the castneters.
