fishinpox 12-16-2012 02:27 PM

That's what I do

1fastmerc 12-16-2012 02:29 PM

Yep that's how it's done!

jdm4x43732 12-16-2012 02:40 PM

Butthole, backbone, head, flip.

got my new signature

redaddiction 12-16-2012 02:53 PM

Yep, you get a perfect filet every time. With no bones.

rustyb 12-16-2012 03:07 PM

Nice video. (As always)

Will"E"Fish 12-16-2012 04:37 PM

And cut out backbone an use head and remaing body for crab bait. No waste!

Jrchip1 12-16-2012 04:39 PM

Yep....I keep a couple bags of "heads" in the freezer for crab bait.

Slightly different.......After cutting down to the tail end with the knife, I slide the knife blade back towards the "belly" area and flip the meat using the knife blade, instead of grabbing the meat with my hand.

Gottogo49 12-16-2012 08:29 PM

Yep, that's how I roll. If you back up the blade a little after you make the cut along the backbone from head to tail you can flip the fillet back over without touching it. The guides can do it without ever stopping the blade they just change the directions quickly. It doesn't work on redfish of course. How about a good flounder cleaning video. I've seen some dudes butcher a nice flounder and then trow away the white side. HaHa.

x2
and i put a rubberband around the trigger so i dont have to squeeze it

inchspinner 12-16-2012 09:09 PM

Thats how i do it, but for the vid i just used my hand to be percise lol.....its hard to do it slow...

wishin i was fishin 12-16-2012 10:07 PM

saw some guides do it that way a few years ago. once you get a rhythm you can roll through some fish.

Ray 12-16-2012 10:54 PM

Terry Shaunnessy showed me that technique In the early 90's

Go on you tube and search how to debone a flounder. They have a fella from Dularge that shows how to debone it.

speck-chaser 12-16-2012 11:10 PM

yessir!!! Butthole,backbone,head,tail---nothing but trout.

SuperDave 12-17-2012 07:11 AM

That's exactly how I fillet my trout. Great minds think alike!

swampman46 12-17-2012 12:00 PM

So I assume it can be done that way on reds also?

jchief 12-17-2012 12:05 PM

Nope, or not that I have had success with. Reds backbone and rib cage is different than a trout.

SpeckJackin4Life 12-17-2012 02:41 PM

Nice

"W" 12-17-2012 04:39 PM

I can clean 60 trout under 5 mins (with all trout with in reach)

getonfish 12-17-2012 04:52 PM

Nice vid Chris.......................the real question is how long does it take to skin and clean a squatch?

bgizzle 12-17-2012 06:31 PM

And 1 every 5 sec. U a bad dude!!! Make a YouTube vid dub like the redfish cleaner at cocoa marina. I gotta see this. Bet thAt cocoa marina guy can clean(half shell) 15reds before you can clean 60trot. Check tape

Will"E"Fish 12-17-2012 06:52 PM

Dats sumbad azz knives, and a bit pricey.

Was cleaning trout one day, and guy said you clean a trout about every 5-7 seconds ( that was not trying)

Had Josh time me on 60 trout a few weeks back and it was right at 5mins 22seconds

rustyb 12-17-2012 07:00 PM

I remember you said you used a hamilton beach knife. I use em also and just bought another and the trigger has to be pulled back a little and down. It is a pain to do. Are they all like that now? My older one was easy to pull.

rustyb 12-17-2012 07:03 PM

PS. I cleaned my catch saturday, in half that time!

You dont, bring it to the taxidermy...

cajun bill 12-18-2012 09:53 AM

just wondering

I wonder if anyone has compared the results of cleaning fish this way and the "traditional" way of filleting. I think I'll try a test next time I go/catch some specks. I will try to pick identically sized specks and clean them both ways and then weigh the resulting fillets on my wife's Weight Watcher's scale which is very accurate (and seldom used for its intended purpose, but that's another story :grinpimp:)

Just seems like there would be more waste cleaning them according to the video, but perhaps I'm wrong.

jchief 12-18-2012 10:37 AM

You are not wrong. If you cut off the belly meat. But fighting that damn swim bladder isn't worth it to me.

Ray 12-18-2012 07:55 PM

You just lose a little meat outside the ribs.
If you bring in a limit, you don't lose much.
It's much faster and easier. No extra time
to cut off the ribs.

On 45 to 60 trout ...... NOT worth the time for a extra trout worth of meat

That swim bladder will screw you on every fillet. The only way to clean trout is just like the video shows. Heck I thought everyone cleaned em that way! It works on bass too!

coastalobsession 12-26-2012 09:37 PM

If you are going to use a electric knife then hamiliton beach is the way to go. I personally like a traditional knife such as
Bubba Blade
Forchiner
Dexter Russel

Clampy 07-02-2013 10:19 AM

This one time at spicers I cleaned 100 trout in 12 mins. They were all 8.5 lbs too all caught on the same sparkle beetle.

"Its Just a Ride "

swamp snorkler 07-02-2013 10:28 AM

You averaged 4.56 to 7.1 seconds a fish, That's pretty good.

Clampy 07-02-2013 10:48 AM

Cleaned them with a butter knife too.

"Its Just a Ride "

bmac 07-02-2013 11:15 AM

Bookmarked that video. Now I just need to learn to catch fish so I can get some practice cleaning them!

Clampy 07-02-2013 11:40 AM

All you gotta do is launch early and follow a Haynie.

You will never go back to cleaning them any other way.

swamp snorkler 07-02-2013 01:33 PM

I agree I showed my neighbor how to clean them like that 7 years ago and he never went back to the other way.

bmac 07-02-2013 05:02 PM

Will it work for reds also?

Sea-Trac Offshore 07-02-2013 05:49 PM

I have always done it like that. Very fast. Keeps everything together and less mess.
