Dog pain killers
Although my lab is only 7 1/2 years old, she gets VERY sore after making a hunt. Pretty much after a hunt she gets stove up and cant get around well until the next day. If its real bad I hunt her one day a weekend. If she seems fine I hunt her both days. Well after yesterday's hunt she seems to really be hurtin. She seemed fine once we got home but that afternoon I went in the backyard and she could barely get up from laying down. Takes her a sec to get up on her back legs.
Took her to the vet last season for soreness after a hunt(when I first realized it) and the vet said she was just sore and gave me some doggy pain pills to give her after a hunt. Well I ran out and went to get more and they said I had to bring her back in because it has been over a year and I couldnt just get more. Question is, does anyone know what type and amount of regular pain killers I can give her to hold her over? Bayer, advil, tylenol? She seems to be hurting alot. Do yall think she may be getting that degenerative hip syndrome that labs are notorius for? |
man, i hate to hear that, she is a gorgeous dog and well mannered. Hate seeing a good dog in pain. That rice field aint no joke. Bet that goose that ran 120 yards didnt help any either.

Probably a joint supplement would be best. That way you are not cover up the pain, the would help live the joints. The will probably prescribe something with glucosamine in it. Although, you can probably get it online a lot cheaper. Hope this helps.

My vet told me to try buffered aspirin when I had buster. We found it at Petco.
|
Ecotrin, it's a buffered aspirin and should be safe for dogs. She has bad wheels (hip displaxia) and vet should have shot x-rays to diagnose properly. Google; toe step kennel and order the joint supplement bill sells. Probably best to retire her because it ain't gonna ever get better. Bad hips are usually genetic, this why clean dogs cost more (testing).

Lady I know had a 8 yr old black lab that she had to retire from hunting because she thought it had arthritis. It would just hobble around. The vet told her to try changing his food to just regular Purina Dog Chow, and that sucker is a new dog now:)
|
Don't ever give a dog Tylenol or Advil - buffered aspirin only!
Also, what food is she on? I ask, becasue certain foods are cooked down so much, some things they need daily are no longer in the dry foods. Thus, supplements are needed. I use only Diamond Premium adult food for my dogs and the extra cost is worth every penny. Paying $32 for 50lbs. |

We just recently moved and my dog has always slept in a kennel. Well the first couple of nights the dog cried all night in the kennel so my wife brought him to the vet and they said it was suffering from anxiety from the move! So they prescribed him Valium. We gave him that for 3 nights before bed and now he is back on track. When she told me that I was like what the hell! They trying to turn my dog into an addict! Anyway hope your lab gets better.

Be careful w aspirin. 3 days at therapeutic dose can gastric erosions. There is a reason for the newer meds. Mobic is now available generic and is a much cheaper option just limited weight range. Again, careful w aspirin

Diet, I put mine on raw food diet and he stopped itching and acted like he got a new carburetor... Never stiff even after swimming all day, or running 6-7 miles.
I made my own food with 5lb 80:20 ground beef, a cup or two of olive oil, a can of steens, a can of whole oats, a half box of corn flakes, and a couple gelatin packs to help keep it all together. You can add other supplements for joints too. Hand mix all that and put it in sandwich bags and throw it in the fridge. One pack a day, either all at once or half twice a day. His snacks were raw turkey necks, giblets, and whatever else was cheap in that section of the meat department. This supplemented minerals that he wouldn't get from the main diet - talk about a happy dog. And no, it didn't make him want to eat my birds. |

My big lab had some issues when she was 90 lbs; I changed her food and she lost 10 lbs pretty fast. She has stayed at 80 lbs for 5 months and she runs and jumps with no issues.
Those 10 lbs were really hurting her. I get 50$ bag of food from the local feed & seed ; 18$. Love that price. I brought the ingredients to the vet and he said it was quality food. So I'm sticking with it. Both my labs weight has leveled off and it's easier to regulate Them now. |
I feed Pro plan 30/20 performance which has glucosamine but not in therapeutic levels. Tractor supply has it for about $45 a bag. There's a food called Star Pro that is verbatim in ingredients to pro plan but about $20 cheaper. My dog didn't do well on it but a lot of other people switched to it and love it now. If you wanna get a full therapeutic dose of glucosamine you will have to use supplements to get it.

Bring her in and get the (rymadil) pain meds. It works like a dream. As some people have mentioned some ibuprofins can be deadly(causes internal bleeding). So be careful. What area do you live?

She can ride on my 4 wheeler anytime......

I have the same problem with my lab. He is almost 10. I have only hunted him 5 or 6 times this year. It's tough for him to get around the marsh. I just bring him to find the birds we can't find when one of my buddies with dogs can't go. He doesn't hear well either. Thanks for the info.

I agree, if taken for prolonged periods. It is still the best pain reliever, it will def. help. But like all pain meds, or non steroidal anti inflammatoriy, in moderation. It also comes in a generic. Dont remember the name. I think it is similar to tramadol.
|
Yes, not looking for a daily use because generally she gets around just fine. Just the day or next day after a hunt is when it is the worst. This time seems pretty bad, I just feel bad for her.

This is her...

If that's a recent pic of her I would really consider pulling some weight off of her. You might be surprised what that will do just on its on.

She needs to look skinny to most people. When you look down at her she should have an hourglass shape. You should be able to see the last rib. She has kinda square figure. Not much waistline. |
So youre looking for a morning after pill for your dog??
|
she aint really that fat. She looks like she weighs more than she does. My lab is heavier and "fatter looking" than she is.
|
Those pics are all from this season. How exactly does one go about getting there dog to slim up? Hunting season is the only thing I have found to slim her up. Do they make a Jenny Craig for dogs?

It is as simple as less food. I have a lab that can only be fed a small amount or she gets overweight quick. They make foods that are for overweight dogs but, less food works fine. If a dog is overweight it is consuming too much food.
|
Should I slowly decrease little at a time or decrease alot right away?

Whatever you can stand. Cut back over a week. That usually makes you not feel as guilty.
|
Lake chuck duck,
I do not have Rimadyl. I do have tramadol. Tramadol is only a pain killer and is a short term fix like all pain killers. Rimadyl is a super anti inflamatory. (My VET buddy just left and educated me.) Call if you need the doggie drug hook up. LOL 337-316-4193 |
You should feel guilty about making your dog healthier. I monitor my dogs weight constantly. Simple fact is te more they way the harder it is on their joints. How often are you working her during the off season? How much are u currently feeding? Very important to keep your dog in shape especially before the season starts. How would you like to go run 5 miles after you been on te couch for 8 months? It would be very hard, same thing you are asking her to do. It's not just about their weight, they need to be in shape. If it helps I feed eukanuba salmon and rice. I feed 3 Mardi gras throw cups a day during hunting and 2 1/2 during off season. I watch his weight very closey and adjust accordingly.
|
Dood she b PHAT! Cut her ration n half now, when she look anorrexic up it gradually. You wouldn't keep stopping at McDonald's if yo kid was a fat azz would ya?
Pookie, stop feeding ur hound also!!!! |
I give her 2 parade style cups full(actually mcneese tailgate cups) of Iams large breed every night.
|
I would try just 1 cup a day
|
Leave it to Raymond not to sugar anything, at least i tried too. Tell raymond to stay away from jack in box. Lol, all seriousness she needs to drop at least 10 lbs.
|
So you agree go to one cup of food?
|
Al dogs are a little different. Its just like people. Some can eat like a horse and not gain weight, while some eat like a bird and put on weight. More about metabolism. Cut your food in half, if he gets too skinny, bump it up a little.
|
Most folks wit fat dogs thinks mine is skinny. He is actually in great shape. But for real, your dog is fat. Cut back to one cup.

Buddy(5'8" 350#) brought his well muscled trained lab to vet one day. The lady next to him remarked of how skinny Dutch was. He turned and told her that it was his observation that most fat folks had fat dogs and he wasn't going to have a fat dog! Lose 10# and use her another 3 yrs or keep feeding her and be done the choice is yours my friend. |
puriana pro plan 1 cup (parade style) a day. but thats coming from someone that owns a 54# full grown lab. haha and my dog looks skinny to most but she is fit!during hunting season i do bump it up to 1 1/2 to 2 cups a day.
|
Might wanna research that Iams food too. I havent seen real good reports on that brand. Most big companies like that spend more money on their advertisement than they do on their ingredients. Sometimes vets arent the best nutritionalists either. My local vet only sells science diet. Its very low on the list of quality food, but they prolly get a comission for selling it. Check the first 3 ingredients of the food, should have at least one good meat in the first 3. Ive been having good results with my dogs on call of the wild. Its made by diamond. If you want a good supplement also, check out Nuvet. Very good success stories.
