Spawn is starting at Lake Martin

My brother called me up this afternoon wanted to make a afternoon run. Figured it would be tough after the front, boy was I wrong. We fished the north side of the lake in the lilly pad and grass mats with a black n red pitt boss. Fished for 3 hours ended up with 12 bass. Nothing huge 2-3 pounders but they were all full of eggs and in 1-2 fow. Next full moon it will be on.

Armand16 01-31-2013 08:44 PM

Good report.. Music to my ears.

Montauk17 01-31-2013 08:44 PM

I plan on going back saturday with the jig pole try to catch some slabs. My brother does not fish for sacalait much so we didn't even try. Will be in a light blue 15' duracraft with a 60 johnson.

Thanks again!

What's dive limit on em over there caught a few in recent trips threw em all back tho. 12-13 1/2"
Same with sacs do they have a size limit on em?

Montauk17 01-31-2013 11:19 PM

No size limit on bass or sacalait at lake martin. If you want to keep bass the 12-15 inchers are the best to eat. I let all the bass go they were about to pop with eggs. Sacalait is a different story though, pop them in hot grease. No size limit on them statewide cept for toledo I think they gotta be 10"

bgizzle 01-31-2013 11:25 PM

I knew I heard 10" somewheres that's why I didn't keep em other day. I threw bass back for reason you stated. They were in 2' of water and egged up so I figured that. I may go tomorrow afternoon to check the strength of battery and finish running ethanol fuel out.

Montauk17 01-31-2013 11:27 PM

I think darbonne recently changed to a 10" limit as well....no need to go that far though plenty of sacalait down south.

Country Boy 01-31-2013 11:27 PM

Good to know, thanks for the info. I'm not to much on bass but I'll tear up some sacalait !

I love to catch bass but while I am bass fishing I always end up picking up the jig pole when the area looks crappie.

let me know how u do with sac a lait there cux im dying to go back there to catch some. cux last year i went out there but it was too late for me cux they finished spawning earlier than expected due to warm winter we had last year but i did catch a few nice slabs but hopefully this year i can be right on them and i even got the clear jig tube u were speaking of the other day but this clear jig tube has some black spots on it so im hoping its clear enuf. will try that out to see if it really works even i love using blue and white. but will try to see if i can catch some grass shrimp to tip them on the end of the hook of the clear tube.

Montauk17 02-01-2013 09:22 AM

I love fishing treetops or grass mats ripping them out...never caught a sacalait on a beetle spin.

They there I promise you....Fish the north bank in the lilly pad mats. It can be tough fishing....sometimes you gotta make a opening in the lillys to drop your jig in. I use something similar to a frog gig to open up the lillys. Don't use a cork either, tightline. Shiners work good too when they get picky.

north bank is when u go straight across from boat launch right? cux i tried there a few times and didnt catch maybe its because im using a cork. i need to try without it and see if tha makes a big different but what abt the area where that water pump is on the right side coming out from the boat launch. i think there that watch tower by it and a pier u walk out on. i did catch a few good size in the trees around tha area. im still learning my way around at lake martin but when people say north bank or etc im like ahhh where is that at lol...

Montauk17 02-01-2013 10:15 AM

North side is where the dam is....it's not a watch tower just a small wooden peir by the pump. Water is spilling over the water is so high but the current is helping the bite I think.

a dam! that is new to me.... i never seen a dam over there in lake martin im thinking of the one where u come in onto the gravel road and see a big drain where the water drains out from lake martin and there a little long walkway to sigh see right by it. but as of in the lake itself i never seen no damn just that pump and big pier to fish off of.

Montauk17 02-01-2013 10:42 AM

I say a dam but it is just a spillway...once the water gets to a point it drains over the levy into the canal on the other side of the lake. It is right by the wooden peir to your left if your in a boat.

fishingonewild 02-01-2013 10:54 AM

yea yea yea i get ya now i remember now i used to go back there by truck and on the other side of lake martin there this canal tha ends up in vermillion river i think tha canal comes from a lock cux i was told people usually go there by boat for catfish. but now i get where ur saying and yea that is pretty much where i ususally fish around tha area which u call the north banks

Montauk17 02-01-2013 10:59 AM

Yeah you can get in that canal from the river....the lock is a ways the canal past lake martin by hwy 31. Good spot to go frogging.

fishingonewild 02-01-2013 11:02 AM

but what i dont understand is why its so tough to fish for sac a lait in lake martin cux the way i see it they got everything in that lake tha can produce good sac a lait like millions of cyepress trees underwater trees and stumps grass beds , water lilys shades, deep spots but those sac a lait are really really hard to find when it comes to a great day of fishing. some friends of mine told me that the water is tooo clear that they get spook too easy and they said best to fish before sun rise or sun set or during the night under a full moon. but me i rather be out there on a nice day with little to no wind. even i tried around the duck blinds but uusally that wud be better during the summer but not very often they wud be around them duck blinds in the middle of the lake.

Montauk17 02-01-2013 11:04 AM

It is a tricky lake to master but the old timers fill up ice chests....gotta put in the time to find the sweet spots. Took me 10 years to find areas that produce on a regular basis. After the spring I leave it alone for sacalait....I do much better in the basin.

fishingonewild 02-01-2013 11:09 AM

lol speaking of the basin... u heard of mama pond. im still learning my way around the basin... i usually go to mama pond when the river stage falls down to like 5 foot or less...

Montauk17 02-01-2013 11:12 AM

Yes I fish mommas pond....I rather fish around gravenburg or charenton on that side of the basin. I mostly fish henderson and bayous to the east. Fausse point can be good during the spring too but the water is high and muddy almost everywhere in the basin right now.

fishingonewild 02-01-2013 11:17 AM

i know that what is making me walk back and forth diggin myself into the ground thinking of where can i go fishing while the water in the basin start falling but now mardi gras is coming up so im gonna be caught up with taking the family to parades on the weekends hoping it wud keep my mind off from fishing for sac a lait if the water is still high in the basin.. i usually go to henderson too but dunno if the water wud be clearing up by then in the texco canal. also i usually go to faussie point cux a buddy of mine loves to go there very often and we usually do well in fauisse point but yea water is high in faussie point too

Montauk17 02-01-2013 11:19 AM

LOL I hear ya....the freshwater fishing bug hit me bad this year after a terrible hunting season. Henderson is muddy.....butte la rose canal should clear up first.

fishingonewild 02-01-2013 11:27 AM

well i dont usually do well in bute la rose cux i tried all over in bute la rose and only came out with one sac a lait i must be hitting the wrong spots in there.

I will be out there next week an afternoon or two as well. We did well last year in the snags right across the boat ramp in 4' of water. That would be the west side!:rotfl: Blue/white jig, but there is an old man that fishes about 200 days a year out there and you will see him in an old Ford pickup on the side of the road catching grass shrimp. He is a hoot if you talk to him. Anyways, those fish are spooky because its a shallow lake but that means the lake heats up earlier in the spring = spawn earlier.

If you go when you hear they are biting by word of mouth, you are a week late:rotfl: We caught some decent fish in there, much larger than the average fish that came out of Henderson or other parts of the Atchaf last year.

Top Dawg 02-01-2013 02:33 PM

No size limit on sacalait in Toledo any more either.

Plenty of levee to bank fish from, also the canal on the other side of the lake is full of little catfish.
