LDWF investigates illegal harvest of deer near casino construction site

http://www.kplctv.com/story/21316074...struction-site

A recent picture of a large deer near L'auberge du Lac Casino and Resort is the subject of an investigation by The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
The picture is of an 8-point buck near the construction site for a new casino and LDWF Sgt. Stuart Guillory said with the animals this close to human activity is a concern for wildlife in the area.
"Since the construction began out here, it's kind of moved into an area where a lot of deer were bedded down," Guillory said.
Guillory said the picture lead to the their investigation for the deer in that area, but also to the discovery of the illegal harvest of the buck from the picture.
A construction worker from the casino site killed the buck with a bow at close range.
"It was on a day that they had got off of work early and he went out and shot the deer when no one else was around," Guillory said. "He was more concerned about being from someone from the public or a coworker."
After multiple interviews with the hunter, officials said the deer is believed to have been killed on January 27th.
Agents charged the hunter with taking deer in a closed area. According to Guillory the area wasn't open at the time when the deer was harvested (Jan. 27). Hunting deer by means of archery began Sept. 15, 2012 and ended Jan. 15, 2013.
The man is also being fined for not tagging and not recording the harvested deer. He is also facing charges to obstruction to justice for hiding information from LDWF agents.
The name of the hunter has not been released, but he worked for a construction company. We're told the man has since been fired. Wildlife agents also said he will likely face more fines after their investigation is complete.
Wildlife officials said they recovered the antlers and meat of the animal, and the bow used to kill it. Guillory said LDWF will donate the meat to the Boys Town program in Calcasieu Parish.
"It's not something that it's not like you go out in the wild and the deer sees you and leaves. These deer were just standing on the side of the road and they still are. There are still a high number of deer in this area that we're keeping an eye on for potential people going out and taking them," Guillory said.

weedeater 02-24-2013 12:10 AM

Don't make what this guy did right but, Not sure if they still issue permits or not but I was told that at one time you could get permission to bow hunt on the Port Property...

Lake Chuck Duck 02-24-2013 12:10 AM

I really didnt realize there was that much woods there until they came and cleared it. But still it just doesnt really seem much area for a group of deer to be in. Seems like there would be reports of people hitting deer on prien lake lol.

jchief 02-24-2013 12:53 AM

Why are they calling a poacher a hunter throughout that whole story? Call him what he is.

We had these two awesome bucks that would hang together in late January in Tensas. Uncle would put corn out in the yard and get them every night right outside the camp since they were 2.5 yrs old. Got pics of them when they were 4.5 and then a guy shows me a picture of a buck that an acquaintance had shot with a bow that weekend. He had entered it into a constest at Simmons and that was one of the bucks. I was working at Tensas at the time and the guy then sent me another picture and it was the other deer. He had killed them in the exact same spot. We found that there was a permanent stand with corn and rice bran in a thicket on the NWR right down the road from us in front of another camp. The game warden tried to catch this guy but wanted to get him in the act of hunting. He said there was an almost zero chance of getting him on the charges of shooting those deer over corn, because he would have to basically admit doing it. I ran into the guy the next year out in the woods. We were talking and came about that he had shot two big ones the year before. I wanted so bad to call him out on hunting over bait but am hoping that he will get what is coming to him. People like that just get greedy and will slip up one day. Both of those deer were 160" deer
On another note, a couple of the self-proclaimed greatest bowhunters at Tensas NWR and also the loudest in voicing their opinions:rotfl: got busted a few years back. They constantly talk about need for antler restrictions, archery only, blah blah blah, yet one was caught with a spike and a 4 pt during the gun season:eek: The big bust was right close to the headquarters in a reforested area in the early season where a huge buck had been spotted. There were 4 of them and they all set up lock on stands and all had rice bran piles. The wardens were onto them and just had to catch them in the act. They caught them all on stand hunting over bait and they also had night sights on their bows. They had planned on hunting all day and night to kill this deer. Never got to see the pictures, but it was supposedly a beast. They had to pay a fine but still get to hunt there. Had they actually killed the deer it would have been different.

My dad and his nephew take care of the land behind bww that's cleared. They have seen multiple deer out there and the tracks of one that looked liked to be of a good sized deer. It makes me sick to think that this was probably the deer. Attachment 46619

Yep, 'they' say west of Lake Charles is about to get really developed. Another plant coming soon, something like clearing 1,800 acres and then a couple other large projects as well. More jobs though I guess.

Yes but the land that the plant bought up is already developed. They bought a bunch of houses and are tearing them down.

simplepeddler 02-24-2013 04:46 PM

there is a 16 BILLION dollar LNG project coming to Lake Chuck......me thinks the Louisiana casinos will do just fine for the time being........

That deer's blood line is from Spook's herd. He use to raise and breed deer. Back in the late 80's a tree fell across his high fence and some deer got out. Over the years I have seen some nice bucks on the port property.

Ray 02-24-2013 07:38 PM

We saw a nice buck and 2 does crossing Indian Bay from Rabbit Island to the Casino area one morning this fall. Before they cut down all the trees.

These self-proclaimed greatest bowhunters .......are they brothers from a nearby town. If so, I hunted up there this fall with a guy that had a problem with them a year or 2 back. My firend had found 2 of there tri-pod stands while one of the brothers was hunting on it. They exchanged words and the next day his tires were cut. The Game Wardens know about these 2 guys but just can't catch them.

There are a couple sets of them, but yes they are all from nearby like Delhi, Tallulah, and all the little towns in between. They will do anything to kill bigger deer than the others. Jughead is the nickname of one of them. I wouldn't call anyone out usually but this guy has been caught before more than once, so he is guilty. He hangs around the Sharkey area mainly. There are some others like you mentioned that hunt the reforested areas and hunt from tripods. Every year there are meetings at the headquarters and these are the ones who think they run the show and voice their opinions the loudest and the ones that really don't like people from south Louisiana coming to hunt 'their' refuge. The reason your friends tires got cut are likely due to the south Louisiana thing unfortunately
