Best Liquid Weed Killer

For the lawn. Lawn is mixed grass, I sprayed ortho weed b gone max in the fall and need to spray again - not sure if I was too impressed with its effectiveness. I'm fixing the previous homeowners mess and hope to knock them out with this application so I can get the grass back to normal and let it keep the weeds at bay...

What have y'all had the best kill rates with?

Bumping because I'm kind of curious too. My yard looks like crap covered with weeds and clovers.

mcjaredsandwich 03-22-2013 10:46 AM

Goooh, are they mostly broadleaf, parallel vein or sedge weeds?

budndawn 03-22-2013 10:53 AM

Amine 2-4D is a broadleaf killer. I mix it with round up ultra to kill just about everything. If i remember correctly its like 4 oz round up and 3 oz 2-4D to the gallon.

Mostly broad, but I do have some tall weeds growing up with bluish/purple flowers on them.

Whoa! I have to apply to e lawn as a whole, just want to kill the weeds mixed in with it - not the whole yard!

What kind of grass do you have?

Bermuda, Empire Zoysia, St. Augustine... Find something that kills everything but that. I have Bermuda so I use 2-4-D

There's plenty out there on the market but for me the good ole 2-4D works... Whether its pasture or yard.....

mcjaredsandwich 03-22-2013 01:26 PM

2-4d specifically attacks broad leaf plants

That's a serious dose!!!

Go to your local Helena chemical distributor and get honcho instead of roundup. Same thing but cheaper

Goooh 03-22-2013 03:46 PM

Good tips guys, I researched 2-4D and didn't know until now that it was the main ingredient in most lawn weed killers. I'll be going with a liquid that has a nice shot of 2-4d in it.

Once they are down, it's preventative from there. Gotta keep the grass healthy to chime those suckers out!

The trick to weed n feed is to put it out early in the morning when the dew is heavy. This way the poisone sticks to the leaves.

PaulMyers 03-22-2013 04:20 PM

What kills Virginia Buttonweed and will leave the St Augustine alone?

Never had this stuff before Rita.

weedeater 03-22-2013 07:27 PM

you can treat whole yrd with liquid 2-4d but beware that it will kill shrubs and trees if wind catches it or it gets on roots..... your best bet is Scotts weed and feed applied right now and then do it again in about a month. Scotts will kill the biggest part of your weeds and also fertlize grass so it will get healthy and choke out weeds but you will need to fertilize with triple 13 or triple 16 this summer to help it get healthier.

I use antrazine it works great kills everything but centipede and st. Augustine

I've heard that name before. Where can that be bought? Feed store? Is it liquid or dry?

DannyI 03-22-2013 08:36 PM

Atrazine can be bought at Lowes, brand name Image. It is a liquid and is also in Scotts Weed N Feed. But you can also mix the liquid and spray on additionally if you want. Will not kill your grass. I use Scotts Weed N Feed in my yard, front all St Aug, back mix of St Aug & bermuda. Use before a rain or use a sprinkler. If put to strong and isn't rained on, it could burn your grass ( I know )hehe. But I do put more than called for. Now is the time to put it, especially since its suppose to rain this weekend. Already put mine. Results - you will see the weeds dying out in about a 2 week period.

Danny, how long after putting down the weed and feed can you come back and spray with the atrazine?

DannyI 03-22-2013 08:47 PM

The atrazine will not hurt your grass at all, it is made strictly to kill weeds. So you could spray it right after putting weed/feed

DannyI 03-22-2013 08:59 PM

Also, it will work better to spray it when there is no rain coming. Google atrazinefacts.com. It recommends not using on bermuda, but I havent had any problem. I guess it depends on your formula and how much you spray.

Thanks Danny and you too Doug.

I went to lowes in Abbeville and I'm sure some of the others have it. It's a southern weed and feed with bug killer regular $36 a bag I got for $15 on clearance and they had a pallet and a half left. If you're going that direction it's a pretty good deal.

How about dollar weed. Never used to have this problem but has been taking over for the last few years. Tried the 2-4D but was only mildly effective. Any other suggestions??

Mix a detergent like dish washing liquid with it and use hot water.

Forgot to update.....

I killed the entire lawn with Roundup (like I said I didn't want to do), came through with a power take after 2 weeks of die off and bagged allllllll the dead grass. Dropped the rake down low low and let it eat, this ripped up the dead stuff and scratched the soil good.

After that I came through with a core aerator, then re-seeded with centipede. Watered daily until and now have good germination. I have a ton of Dallis grass, goose grass and crab grass back now, but the centipede is creeping in. I'll hit it with a post emergent killer, then keep on too if it with fall and spring pre-emergent.

Should have some serious turf next year...

PUREBAY2200 06-19-2013 10:32 AM
