Where does everyone Deer hunt?

Give us a little information and pictures.

I hunt public land......WMA's now and have hunted many different places included some of the "state" owned land in the Atchafalaya Basin. I killed several deer on the state land.

I mainly hunt Sherburne WMA....have been going there since about '87 when much of the current land was still hunting clubs. I use to live in Lafayette so I could get there in 30 minutes. I now live in Lake Charles....so it is a long long day when I go now. Hunting there can be good.....if you do some scouting and get away from places that get over hunted.

I also hunt at Clear Creek and sometimes at West Bay WMA's....they are about same distance to get there. I have also hunted at 7 or 8 other WMA's and Federal lands.

Here are a few pictures from Sherburne.

longsidelandry 10-20-2009 11:31 AM

Nice pics, is that a deer bedded down in the middle-right pic?

I deer hunt in Franklinton, LA on a 1200 acre lease. Every now and then I do some hunting in the marshes south of Delcambre.

LaAngler 10-20-2009 11:31 AM

this year i will hunt sherburne, a little in south texas maybe. and clear creek opener possibly....

RaginCagin 10-20-2009 11:47 AM

I hunt on a lease in Big Cane close to Lebeau that is about 2000 acres and also near simmesport on a good friend of mines property on the Red River that is about 1200 acres of family land. When I get a wild hair up my but I go back to my roots and hunt Grassy Lake WMA in Bordleonville but that is a rare occurance now with all the crazies that hunt it.

No.....The Doe is standing and looking at me ~ 75 yards away.

There is a deer "Permanently" bedded down in one of the pictures.

I hunt private property around my house. Undisclosed P-13 classified locations that no one knows of... including me

lol each window unit is a seperate room. That back piece is kinda like walking down a hall in a hotel, rooms on both sides (7 rooms, 1 bathroom).
The part the porch comes off of is the main camp, just an open room with a kitchen, card table and living room. The trailer in the back is where me, my brother, dad, grandpa and uncles stay.

Ray 10-20-2009 01:26 PM

I hunted in Rocksprings, Tx. when I was still in school. Lots of deer, but small.
Then I started hunting South of Merryville, when the timber land was open to the public.
Then I married a girl from NW La., around Converse/Zwolle area. I hunted that area for a few years, then divorced.
Now I am married to a girl from the Vidalia/Ferriday/Jonesville area(lots of hogs there too). My brother in law and his brother have a couple leases up there. I hunt about once a year. I can hunt more, but I am too lazy.
I was a duck hunter for 35 years, until my back stopped me from brushing up the blinds with saltgrass and from standing in the blind too long. Then Rita screwed up my spot on top of all that.

Is it October YET? 10-20-2009 01:40 PM

My uncle just purchased 167 in Lorman, Ms about 5 miles from Fayette. There are deer everywhere on this mofo. I will have plenty in the freezer this year. Last 10 years been killing at Thistlewaite. 2 1/2 hour drive from the house in Luling. East side represent biatch!!!

DeSoto Parish

I hunt on 800 acres of Private Land in DeSoto Parish. I am spoiled with our set up because it is family owned land and there are only about 4 people who hunt it (with some occasional guest). This is only my third year hunting so I am looking forward to it. Last year I killed a doe and a 6pt. Here are some pictures from our place. A few of some deer and one of our family camp.

PM me when u hunt Ft Polk...i know a few spots !!!!

EvinFord 10-20-2009 04:12 PM

Yeah, I am pretty lucky to have it. Been enjoying the land for my entire life (25 long years), but just recently got in to hunting. It is nice because we are able to hunt the property without putting a lot of pressure on the deer. By spreading ourselves out and since there are only 4 people, there aren't 4 wheelers and people all over the place every weekend like a busy lease.

Nah then. We hunt east of 171, and have to small creeks flowing thru, but i doubt its boggy.

Ray 10-20-2009 07:27 PM

If you go South on Texas Eastern Rd., you cross it.
Just wondering. It is pretty long and has a lot of other creeks flowing into it.
I have some friends who have land and cattle on the North side of the creek.

Adam......Do you have much problem at Fort Polk with getting there and finding out everything is closed to hunting due to miltary activities?

I went there back ~ 2001 to get some information and do some scouting......and everything was closed to hunting. The Guy told me that everything had been closed all that week and would not say if he though any areas would be open that weeked for the scheduled opening of gun season.

Is this the normal situation now......or how much of the land is normally open for hunting?

Jordon.....can you comment of this.

CatDaddy 10-21-2009 04:21 PM

Wherever my boat can go at night..

whunter29 10-21-2009 07:07 PM

I hunt mostly on a lease in Bienville parish. I also hunt Thistlewaite and Sherburne. Gerald hit me up sometime when you want to go to Sherburne. We normally kill 3 or 4 deer out of one of my spots in Sherburne for the first either sex hunt and I am trying to put together a crew who likes to hunt. Hell you almost have to want to hunt to go the mile back in the swamp where we go. Its one hell of a drag to get one out thats why I bought a deer dolly.lol

BIGJ 10-21-2009 07:20 PM

ST. Landry Parish in the Bayou Current area.

GERALD

this can be a problem. alot of the people leave when this happens we have been going for so long that we always stay during thanksgiving...you don't ever know till like a week before. i have several spots that i hunt just in case where i scouted is closed....alot of times i just go into kisa****ie because of this. they don't close it and there are just as many deer... we have good luck there always kill deer just got to put in alittle time.

Last year we got there and everything was closed in Fort Polk. we had camp ground to our self. we had pick of the woods in kisatchie too..
don't think it opened up to much last year ought to be full of deer this year....Just steer clear of RED LEG thats my spot :*****:

The one time I went to the "Check-in" building, they told me that they did not know what would be open until they got the word each morning. And I think I was told that the building did not open until 6 AM......way too late to hunt early.

Another thing.....the map that they gave me was terrible. I could not even figure out how to get out of the Base area. I just had to drive around some and figure out which road would take me the direction I wanted to go. I wonder if I still have that map somewhere?

Campground……is this on the south side of Fort Polk?

when we go at thanksgiving they have at least 3 to 4 days up..we go to the check in stations on the wma they have maps put up that show what is open.. you can go to the stores in pitkin and get a permit. these are good for all year. but you still have to check in..

as far as maps use the ones on wlf website they are easiest to read.

the campground there is several we use the one by fullerton when looking at the map off wlf. look at the right side of red leg and go all the way down to the bottom boundry. there is a check in station we camp there there is also a campground in fullerton on fullerton lake. alot of people camp there. that lake is full of fish. the check in station where we camp they put the maps up in there. it is confusing it took several years before i figured it out. as far as where everything was.

that place is weird you will be driving down some road or walking in the woods and you will just walk up on tombstones there is cemetaries all through there. when you have some time to just make a run pm me and if i'm free i'll come take a ride with you.
