Any of you guys working down there? If so what area and do you like it? I just accepted a position down there working 14&14 south of Gonzales.

swamp snorkler 05-14-2013 02:18 PM

there was a thread last year sometime on it, quite a few if I remember correct

jdm4x43732 05-14-2013 02:20 PM

Search showed up nothing. Thought I remembered reading one.

southern151 05-14-2013 02:24 PM

You're gonna work on land now? I think it may have been RedDevil that had posted it up.

mcjaredsandwich 05-14-2013 02:44 PM

Gonna have some great local Mexican food joints.

Raymond 05-14-2013 03:00 PM

Have heard the Sheriffs deputys suggest having a loaded gun or two in your possession at all times.

joeymaloz 05-14-2013 03:18 PM

what r u going to be doing?

bmac 05-14-2013 04:23 PM

Cuero was about the most depressing oilpatch town I've seen. Gonzalez is decent size with a couple restaurants. Floresville to the west was where I spent most of my time. Not bad with a HEB. The walmart was an oldschool one though.

The thing I remember most was they have some amazing patches of wildflowers everywhere right about now.

jdm4x43732 05-14-2013 04:24 PM

Production operator.

I stayed in George West once and, didn't have any issues. We were working in 3 Rivers, about 20 miles away. The only problem was the buzzards!

Swlatiger 05-14-2013 08:00 PM

I hunt near whitsett in McMullen county. That whole part of the state has changed so much it's not recognizable from even 3 years ago! I would definitely recommend having locks on everything.

jdm4x43732 05-14-2013 09:14 PM

In 1999 I worked in Brownsville for a while. I've heard that it changed quite a bit down there. Only thing can go wrong is not like it and come back offshore. I just got to try to get Sammich down there with me. I need someone to do my paperwork!! Haha

latravcha 05-14-2013 09:44 PM

Make sure they have a place for you to stay. Housing is impossible down there.

As our old coworker would say, I don't make enough money to learn that, they gotta pay me more.

Got a new trailer on location for us to live in. Company truck to run around in. We will be taking care of 3 locations spread out over 40 miles. Excited to go. I may not make this whole hitch offshore giving my notice tomorrow they may send me in. Oh well but I plan to complete this hitch not to burn any bridges.

shellman 05-14-2013 10:15 PM

Shell has a lots production @ Carrizzo springs...

southern151 05-14-2013 10:30 PM

Well, if you get in early, maybe you can come get your rifle! You can use it to shoot stuff in tx!

jdm4x43732 05-14-2013 10:33 PM

I forgot about it! Man its been like 5 months. I wont be able to have a gun with me but there is a lot of damage a fella can do 3/4 ton truck if needed. Haha

Big Kahunaz 05-14-2013 11:06 PM

U shouldn't have any issues where u will be at Johnnie. That's as long as u stay away from Nuevo loredo(way southwest) . Not that u wanna be in loredo either after dark but that's just covering ones ***. I've gotten to know lots of locals that say the same before I moved to hawaii that if u keep your nose clean u should have no issues. We do business from cuero to south of three rivers to cotulla etc. not the first issue....yet and none heard of....

I think most problems happened when everything was new and spread out and pickings were easy. Now.... It's a huge boom and there is a ton of traffic coming in and out at all times of the day and night. No time for sneaky BS. Carry a pistol if u wish as I would think that would be the smart thing to do no matter what the option.... but its safe enough if governed by ones company to not have to.

biggun 05-15-2013 08:14 AM

Good Luck Johnny..

jdm4x43732 05-15-2013 08:38 AM

Thanks Gunner. I should be able to get more hunting and fishing in with 2 weeks off at a time.

OnePunchRex 05-15-2013 12:37 PM

Spent several years in that exact area, PM me if you have any questions.

PS - You're a long way from the border, not a dangerous place at all. If you don't take into account all the oil field hands down there. Lol

jldsc 05-15-2013 03:20 PM

yea the biggest danger in this area is wrecks...tons of over hour truck drivers and roughnecks getting drunk everyday.

I have been interested in making the move down there but haven't followed up on it yet.

2nd biggest risk is having to whip some drunk rig hand cause he thought you was looking at his old lady. Lol, kidding aside, I'd throw one in the console just in case; but I'd give you 100,000:1 odds that you'd never have to break leather, even if you lived there for the rest of your life.

slambin 05-17-2013 08:25 AM

its not bad at all around Gonzales. I've been on a bunch of wells on the Eagle Ford and havent had any problems. Drilled wells in Nixon, Yorktown, Gonzales, Kennedy, Karnes City, and Falls City. I bring my bike to location and ride it all the time on lease roads.

Like it was said, the main trouble is just the amount of people on the road. they got some crazy people driving 60mph on a crappy lease road.
