1st trip offshore

Gonna make my first trip starting Thursday and coming back Sunday. I'm kinda nervous about getting sea sick so throw me out some tips. I know about the Dramamine it also heard it makes you drowsy. Let me know what you got.

swamp snorkler 06-19-2013 11:33 AM

Start taking it today and you will be use to it by the time your trip comes around. Don't get to drunk the night before.

Montauk17 06-19-2013 11:40 AM

Don't think about it and you won't get sick.

Top Dawg 06-19-2013 11:49 AM

Don't worry bout it. That's what gets you sick. Get a prescription for the transoderm scope ear patch. Bring along some ginger ale and make sure you eat while you're out there even if you're not hungry.

meaux fishing 06-19-2013 12:32 PM

Do you get car sick or air sick? Also people who get ear infections are more prone to sea sickness I find. I would say make sure you drink water and eat. Bring some dramamine with you just in case but its supposed to be pretty calm all weekend.

cajunforeman 06-19-2013 12:39 PM

Yes, I've gotten car sick and sick in a helicopter before. Both times I was sitting in the back seat and I've flown in the chopper 3 times before this time and never got sick.

Top Dawg 06-19-2013 12:53 PM

If the boat has a cabin on it don't go down below until you have established yor sea legs

SaltERedneck 06-19-2013 12:57 PM

scopalamine patch!!!

or meclizine presciption if you can get it.

swamp snorkler 06-19-2013 01:10 PM

Honestly, the best way for you not to get sea sick is to let me go in your place.

cajunforeman 06-19-2013 01:40 PM

It does have a cabin. I got a call into to the doc to see what's best. Hopefully I can get something prescribed before we leave.

Capt.B 06-19-2013 01:40 PM

Bonine the night before and that A.M.....bring some with.....doesn't make you drowsy like dramamine...you can buy Bonine over the counter

Finfeatherfur 06-19-2013 01:44 PM

If you get car sick or sick in a chopper, you need the Transderm patches. They are good for 3 days once applied and will dry you out in the mouth and nose. No matter how calm it is, sounds like you have an excess amount of fluid on your inner ear which will lead to motion sickness. You will be miserable without it so put it on before you get there, and change it out on Saturday morning. Don't ruin your trip fighting that or anyone else for that matter. Good luck and let us know how you do. Also, Dramamine will make you sleepy, but you can bring some anyway in case you need extra help. You can take it while wearing the patch!

Spunt Drag 06-19-2013 01:45 PM

Dramamine (anti-motion sickness) works good coupled with a syringe of promethazine (anti-nausea) in cream form. You squirt the promethazine onto your wrist and rub them together til it dissolves. But as stated before, a lot of it is mental. I feel queezy everytime I go but I know it's gonna pass. If you freak out and worry yourself to death about getting sick, you will be sick.

With that being said, I've been sick as sick gets, so it does happen. People who say, "I've never gotten seasick" haven't been in rough enough seas!

Top Dawg 06-19-2013 01:46 PM

I have inner ear problems. And when it's bad I get seasick on land.

calcutta37 06-19-2013 02:35 PM

It's gonna be slick don't think about and have fun. The water out here in MC 809 has been puke green for the last week.

cajunforeman 06-19-2013 02:53 PM

I hope it will be slick out there . I think we will be goin about 150 miles out so hopefully it's calm. I just or te scopolamine patch called out and ill get the bromine to go along with it. I'm done worrying about the sickness part of it. If it happens it happens, I'm teddy to catch some fish and enjoy being out there.

Top Dawg 06-19-2013 02:54 PM

If y'all are goin way out u will have a blast. Ill take a yellowfin steak and a chunk of wahoo!

cajunforeman 06-19-2013 03:20 PM

That's what we will be going for, gotta love a fresh yellowfin steak. They said they caught some tile fish a couple of weeks ago so I'm pumped! I never had it but they say its good!

puke green?

ScubaLatt 06-19-2013 08:13 PM

stay away from greasy foods like sausage. eat ham/turkey sandwiches but not too much mayo, preferably just a little mustard. don't eat a lot of sweets like honey buns or eclaires or doughnuts. drink plenty of, but not too much, water. if you feel yourself getting queezy look towards the horizon. avoid bending down to get bait or pick up fish off deck. this can get you sick faster than anything. stay out of the back of the boat and engine fumes. don't get too overheated either. stay in the shade when possible.

The first time I fished with sammich I had a bundle of promethazine syringes in my tackle bag left over from a offshore trip. Jared needed something out of my bag and found all the syringes. Man y'all should have seen the look on his face. Priceless. *****. Btw my wife makes this at her work. She runs the lab for Boudreaux's new drug store. Ohh. They work awesome for a hang over.

Hahaha yeah! I bout **** myself. Didn't know you very well at the time and almost decided to swim back to the launch.

Those do work wonders though. I used to work there too and it was one of the more popular prescriptions. Goooh, just ask your doctor for an Rx.

Bdub 06-19-2013 08:48 PM

I'm also making my first trip offshore this weekend...glad its supposed to be nice for the first trip out. Don't know if we will be going as far out as you, I believe last time they went about 40 miles out and fished for snapper

cajunforeman 06-19-2013 09:47 PM

Thanks for all the tips. I got a script for the patch scaloppine and got some Dramamine. I'm sure I will still get quezzy but I hope it's not bad. I just want at least one full day of fishing and be able to enjoy being out there. Ill report when we return.

fishinpox 06-19-2013 10:55 PM

Start taking ginger capsule a few days in advance, then get some Bonnine in your system a day before even if it makes you drowsy you'll be so pumped once that first tuna makes a reel scream you won't give a crap! No greasy heavy foods, try fruit, plain sandwiches ect. Also bring a few cans of ginger ale that helps. The only time I get screwed up is on long runs 150+ miles in big sport fishers once we go inside and watch tv or play cards. So I try to hang out on the stern and watch the wake in te flood lights or if I can focus on a platform I do that. But by the 1st night you will be ok

Mako19 06-19-2013 11:10 PM

If you do start to feel queezy dont give in to the sickness.
Keep fishing or moving around or anything to keep your mind off of the sickness.

One question: I have never checked into a three day trip like this. I am sure it is bad *** but can you still only catch two YF tuna over the entire three days? That would kimd of suck.

Anyone know how limits apply to multi day trips like this?

I wonder the same thing, some boats go out for 3-4 day trips. How many Tuna can they bring back?

I read that you can possess your limit for each consecutive day out there up to a maximum number of days

Top Dawg 06-20-2013 07:28 AM

I believe the daily bag for yellowfin is 3
