huntin fool 06-22-2013 04:19 PM

Hummingbird bro.

shellman 06-22-2013 05:16 PM

Garmin 740 is the ****z....i love mine....

Montauk17 06-22-2013 05:26 PM

Lowrance HDS but Garmin is the most reliable and user friendly....their depthfinder isn't the best but if you fish mostly salt I don't see the need in down scan.

inchspinner 06-22-2013 06:06 PM

Keep em comin

meaux fishing 06-22-2013 06:34 PM

you getting a new boat to go with that gps? I saw you sold your old one...

I like the lowrance HDS. Im probably about to go with a 7 or an 8. Im not gonna add structure scan right away, but I like that you can. Garmin is a good unit though. I have no experience with hummingbird

Bdub 06-22-2013 07:01 PM

I like the lowrance models, but raymarine has a new one out with sonar and it looks promising, very very detailed images from everything I've looked at online. I believe its around 600$

alphaman 06-22-2013 07:50 PM

U saw my hds 7 touch /structure scan, and what it can do!!!

Elite 5, for the price you can't complain. Seems like they are always on sale somewhere.

That's the one!

drjay 06-22-2013 10:42 PM

Always had Lowrance in the past, but just switched to the Garmin 740s. The Garmin is just so much more user friendly, and it is overall less of a hassle (putting in waypoints, navigating screens, etc.). Everyone says the Lowrance has better imaging, but how much imaging are you using in Big Lake where everything is like 5 feet deep. If you are going offshore, then I think the depth finder/imaging becomes more important.

grizzon30s 06-23-2013 10:15 AM

I have garmin 541s and I'm happy with it. The maps aren't very accurate, often times I find myself traveling over land haha. Id really like to have one of the lowrance hds units or the elite 7hdi so I could run the standard mapping ecard. That thing is awsome!

getonfish 06-23-2013 11:31 AM

Dude just get an HDS 7 without touch. They are sale everywhere and you already know it since you had an HDS 5

Natural Light Kid 06-23-2013 01:09 PM

Elite 5 dsi will be on sale at west marine for $299 Monday only. That's hard to beat.

I finally brought the HSP 7 touch.. I'm still learning it.. IT has so many features.. I can NOT learn them all At once.. The Depthfiner is So Complicated to setup and learn... I still haven't marked a fish with it..

It's really sensitive... But I'm learning how to use of on each trip.. MY youngest son fished with me for 3 day for the fishing for memories tournament.. He was doing things with it that I didn't know it can do.. I'm Electronically challenged.

If I have to do it OVER I would have purchased the HDI elite 7 which would have been enough for me..

Only draw back U can't accept others chips.. Such as standard map.. Etc...

I thinking about getting an after marker transducer such as Airmar.. The Lowrance high speed transducer that's comes with it isn't the best.

I had standard maps customize a chip for me..

I did a lot of research and for the price the HSI 7 Elite with a Navionics platinum chart would have been just fine for me.. But I let a salesman up sell me to a unit that would accept his chip..

I have over 2,2K in a HDS 7 Touch with installation..

ACADEMYPROSTAFFER19 06-23-2013 06:03 PM

Should have came see me at Academy Gunner.....long time no see hoss ! I would have kept you from getting sucked in from lame arse that you are talking about.

cajun bill 06-23-2013 07:30 PM

I recently bought the HDI 7 and while I don't find the down imaging very useful yet, I haven't been in an area where I think it could be valuable. Love the big screen and I find the menu very user friendly. I'm trying to download Capt. Paul's Edge maps into it, but so far, have not been successful.

If anyone has experience with loading Capt. Paul's Edge waypoints/maps into a HDI 7, I'd love to discuss with you.

alphaman 06-24-2013 07:13 AM

Are you suppose to here the ping signal coming from the sonar while it is on .. just wondering bc I heard mine this weekend. I could have been the dirt in the water.. first time hearing that

Academy in Lafayette had the Elite 5 DSI on sale for 270 off so i think it was like 249...I got an Elite 4 dsi from them for 199 bc they told me the wrong price at the reel bar!

SuperDave 06-24-2013 09:56 AM

I've got a Ankona Native SUV that you could go under cover with!

I use a Lowrance Elite 5 DSI and its user friendly. Next one will be a Lowrance HDS 8 with a standard mapping chip.

Damn, it all makes sense now! Every time I would hear "blah blah needed at the real bar", I was looking for a place to buy a beer.

Xpress21 06-24-2013 11:04 AM

740s hands down best one i ever had. Have used the lowrance hd models as well. nothing close to the 740s.

The Elite 7 will accept a standard mapping chip. I talked with the guys at standard mapping a few weeks ago and they told me it would.

Copied this from standard mapping's website:
This software works on all Lowrance HDS models. The Elite-7 HDI is the only Elite model supported. E-Cards are also supported on Simrad.
I would not buy a new gps if it didn't fit into the above category. I wish they would make it compatible with garmin...
