Caught this little sucker in my back yard and not exactly sure what it is. I checked his eyes and its not poisonous. He was only about 10 inches long so I'm assuming its a baby.

Crap. The pictures don't look as clear on here as they do on my phone.

BIG-C 06-27-2013 10:43 PM

Looks like what I call a ground rattler.

inchspinner 06-27-2013 10:44 PM

Chicken snake!

specknation 06-27-2013 10:53 PM

ratdog

Mako19 06-27-2013 11:07 PM

I have never heard to check a snake's eyes to determine if it is poisonous or not.
What is it in their eyes that tells you one way or the other?

Dink 06-27-2013 11:15 PM

Pupils. Diamond shaped is poisonous. Round is not

Mako19 06-27-2013 11:28 PM

Gotcha. That sounds like something that I would check after the head has been detatched from the body of the snake!

I don't think that's always the case, just like all poisonous snakes don't have a diamond shaped head

Yer_Corks_Under 06-27-2013 11:58 PM

Looks like a prarie king snake.

Lol. It was a tiny little guy. I actually just let it go, I think that's the first time I've ever let one live but I'm pretty sure it was harmless.

Every poisonous snake has a elliptical eye ( like a cat ) but some nonpoisonous do too. Like pythons.

Yeah but even he has a built in "danger, I'll kill you" message-- "Black and yellow, kill a fellow."

Fishmaster19 06-28-2013 07:36 AM

Its a garder snake.

Fishmaster19 06-28-2013 07:37 AM

I find them in the yard and flower beds all the time...and the cats love to eat them. Its not a baby. they are just small and eat insects.

Fishmaster19 06-28-2013 07:38 AM

Garter*

Clampy 06-28-2013 07:49 AM

Ok one doesn't

Not saying your wrong, but don't garter snakes usually have yellow stripes? This one looked like it had more diamond shapes on his back. Or, are there different breeds of garter snakes?

Dink 06-28-2013 08:14 AM

Did it make your hands stink?

Texas Garter snake. A baby one.

Mr T 06-28-2013 09:27 AM

its not a garter snake, it is a Brown Snake. Much smaller than a Garter Snake, that's about as big as they get, found in gardens etc. It is about as harmless a snake as you can find. Garter Snakes have a much whiter background.
Prairie Rattler? are you kidding me?

swamp snorkler 06-28-2013 10:02 AM

You did good letting it go, keeps the bugs and mice down.

specktator 06-28-2013 10:43 AM

Yeh def not a garter snake. I have one that I caught 2 years ago that I still have today. My daughter wouldn't let me let it go. Pretty cool little guy. Like to watch him eat goldfish.

kenmore_mo1 06-28-2013 01:45 PM

Yeah, I wasn't too worried about it being venomous. I almost just stomped him out but decided to be nice.

nimbus73 06-28-2013 03:20 PM

It's called a Dekay's snake. google it. It's in the brown snake family, prolly cause you brown yur drawers when you find it. Startling to find them in the flower beds around the house, but they are harmless.
