V bay ?
When you leave intercostal city launch going out 4 mile cut, along the way to the right looks to be some sort of weirs and also looks to be some in onion lake. Are they open to be fished? Just trying to scout out some spots with the map.
I have heard about the GW camp but don't know where it is. And know that some spots around it are closed at times. Trying to put a trip together Friday evening if I get a chance. |
Gm camp is south of North lake, Which is by fearman lake. And there is a wier in that area too.

No weir inside 4 mile cut, there is several inside redfish point. Onion lake is silted in,don't go in there unless you have a surface drive. You can still fish the canal going to the lake but that's about it. Mostly catfish in that area.

The top marker is 4 mile cut and the bottom is the game warden's camp

Is 4 mile cut just the opening to the bay from the canal?
|
Thanks guys. The weirs or what lookalike weirs are to the west along 4 mile cut. Just looking to find spots to start at so i dont have to run all over Friday evening.
|
Those are not weird they are terraces. Strips of grasses planted to prevent erosion. No fish in onion lake but the reds will get round the terraces on west side of 4 mile cut

Like montauk said no weirs off 4 mile cut. There is a reef just to the left of 4 mile and all the bank where the blue line is drawn is good for reds Attachment 52933
|
The whole north shoreline of redfish point is good too

I've been told to fish the back side of the berms along 4 mile cut. How tricky is it to get back there through the mouth of what's marked on this map as the vermilion? |
Just Motor down and troll if you can. Don't take someone's word for it because things change overnight. I say troll if it ain't far which looks to be the case

Better to fish the mouth of 4 mile cut, near the channel markers. The little chevrons on the west side of 4 mile can be treacherous, and not worth the risk. You can also catch croakers with dead shrimp on the bottom of the north entrance to Lake Fearman. As you round Red Fish point and head towards the game warden camp, if you travel about 200 feet from the bank idle down and look at your depth finder. As it goes from 4 feet to 1.5 feet, you are right on top of Redfish Point reef.
|
That sounds like a plan! Thanks for the advise!
|
I've only fished that area when I was young. I remember catching fish on the bay side of the mouth. A pretty good ways out. It's been along time. We caught specks when they was on. I remember them trots nailing the bait. Rip a zebco out ya hand kinda hard
|
Also be careful if u get in Lake Fearman its very shallow all over.

My first year living south of I-10 me and bro in-law went thru Onion Lake when the tide was high and fished around south of there a while. Fished til dark and headed back in. Tide was ripping out, and we went about 1/2 mile into Onion Lake kicking up mud and got stuck. 1 hour of pushing and got back into deeper water and kept running onto mudflats so finally tried to go back west and ran out of gas:rotfl: Put trolling motor down and tried to troll out against the tide, and finally ran out of juice. Had to call Vermilion Parish Sheriffs Dept to come and get us. They will NOT tow you back to the ramp, but they will come and pull you to 'safety'. They got there about midnight because they had to get an airboat. Pulled us almost to 4 mile and made us tie up the boat and they took us back to the ramp. Lost a quart of blood from mosquitoes that night. Trust me, that place is shallow:grinpimp:

These are some places you can enter the Lil bay off of the four mile safely. I've been seeing crabbers use these paths, so if they can pass, I think almost any bay boat can pass. |
stay all the way close to the left bank when running onion lake, stay on step, canal turns to the left when you get to the end of the lake, also goes straight, but very shallow there. It ends in a dead end, I have caught bass and reds the same day back there. but thats been a few years, only thing back there now is flounder.
|
I would say 3-4' never checked it with a depth finder, but passed it many times in a bay boat. I would be careful pretty much any where in lil bay and fearman with a hard north wind in the winter though.

Thanks ill be giving it a try in the morning...
|

|
Thanks for the info guys. I'll use it next time I go out there. It looks like I am not going to make it this Friday. Hopefully soon.

Nice info
I like the info sent concerning 4 mile cut, etc. I would appreciate some pointers as to how you guys are able to draw lines and input messages upon the maps shown. I'm no big computer expert but would like to be able to do some of the stuff you guys have done. Thanks in advance for any help

I use a simple, free app called my maps.
|
Looks like my trip is back on. The only thing is ill have to leave work at 5 pm. Puts me at the launch at 6 ish. Better than going home to an empty house to do nothing.
