dead pet rabbit

found the rabbit on the ground under the cage that is about 4-5 feet off the ground. hole in the wire part of the cage was about 1 foot around. the weird part is the rabbit's eyes were both hanging out and a little blood around the mouth, other that that, no other bite marks or wounds?? any idea what would kill the rabbit but just leave it there??
there are no dogs around and we live in a subdivision so no woods for about a mile??

I have killed them in the yard before... just never thought they would kill a rabbit just to kill it??

Chupacabra

Clampy 07-10-2013 09:44 AM

Snake. Then it realized the rabbit was to big to eat.

What kind of marks are in the wire that was cut? Does it look like something chewed through or snipped? Got pictures?

FF_T_Warren 07-10-2013 10:18 AM

I'd bet fox. We live in a neighborhood and several months ago I found all my chickens dead but they weren't eaten. Few months later same thing with my neighbor's chickens except this time we saw the foxes in the area. Just killing to kill. Didn't even eat em

That was my first thought however I don't think a snake can break through hardware cloth.

fun w son 07-10-2013 12:42 PM

chicken wire was busted

Loneshark 07-10-2013 01:28 PM

I'd say a coon.

I'm gonna set up the live animal cage tonight...hopefully the mystery will be solved.

Game cam!

CajunSteelsetter 07-10-2013 04:28 PM

Yeah coon or possum. Young coons sometimes kill stuff just because. They like to grab em through the wire and just yank on em till they pull em through the cage. It's happened to one or two of mine back home.

Maybe a mink, I had one that snagged 3 of my chickens a while back. I've also seen one chasing a rabbit while I was bow hunting.

Put another rabbit in the cage and and set up a trail cam

Pat Babaz 07-11-2013 01:47 PM

maybe the rabbit got hung up in the hole in the wire by its neck and strangled itself. Then after it died it fell to the ground?? Idk, this is interesting though, let us know what you find.

Think I found my answer to the dead rabbit

swamp snorkler 07-22-2013 08:52 AM

Leave him in there for a week or so and feed it some corn, let it get fattened up. Then cook it.

fishfighter 07-22-2013 08:53 AM

rice

cook some rice!!! them things are usually too smart to get caught in a trap, but when you do catch them they make a good gravy
