Strike King 10XD

Strike King 10XD..... anyone used them yet? What line you had the best luck with? I'm gonna try Sunline Sniper 12# flouro. I hope it's not too light.

SaltERedneck 07-16-2013 02:00 PM

Better have you a 5:1 ratio reel with a MH looong stout rod. They will work you. 10lb or 12 lb fluoro. I have always used 10lb seagar abrasion resistant with no problems.

apous 07-16-2013 02:02 PM

Got a revolution winch with 7'6 castaway skeleton crank bait s

SaltERedneck 07-16-2013 02:06 PM

I just cant see spending that kind of cheddar for a crankbait... i go through 6XDs like it aint nothing. guaranteed to lose 1 per trip lol. at $17 a pop that bait better catch a 8lber per trip. The 6XD will touch down to 22 feet if you chunk it far enough.

BassAssasin 07-16-2013 02:06 PM

man id run heavier than 12 # with a bait that expensive, they say it will still hit 22 ft on 16 lb fluro

apous 07-16-2013 02:11 PM

Special*

apous 07-16-2013 02:41 PM

My dad bought me 10 of them. I throw SPRO cranks. I'm used to expensive trips

wow!! heck of a dad!

apous 07-16-2013 03:02 PM

I don't want to throw bigger than 12 because I'm gonna be throwing other cranks with the same rod. And the other cranks optimum performance is with 12# line. Smell what I'm stepping in? I want to get away with using one rod.

apous 07-16-2013 03:04 PM

He gets on a kick and it usually lasts about 3 years. For the passed 48 months he been throwing swim baits because 4 yrs ago we came out second in a tournament using swim baits. Lol! Now he wants to throw 10XDs

jchief 07-16-2013 04:27 PM

Why not throw it on braid with a limber rod???

Or have a GOOD lure retriever.

Montauk17 07-16-2013 04:47 PM

Hard to say what rod would be best for a 2oz crankbait!

apous 07-16-2013 05:08 PM

Tried other cranks with braid and they don't perform as well as with flouro. I mainly want to know the 12# line hinders the action any. I know the line can handle the lure. Hell I've caught plenty 5 pounders on 12# line. And that's heavier than the lure. As far as hanging it up and losing it.... you gonna do that with any line 10,12,14,16 or 20. Unless you have a damn good retriever!

Yea I feel ya. I throw mine on 14# with a skeet Reese s glass crankin rod. It's not near enough rod for the 10xd I have to lob it pretty easy but that sucker still goes a mile

buddy of mine built one since he fishes alot of cranks.

he used an old reel mounted on a old rod, cut off at the eye closest to the reel, with some nylon string and bought one of the retrievers at Academy that look like a fish with two big rings under it..... works very good

jldsc 07-17-2013 07:36 AM

I believe TS Marine makes a retractable one

BIGV 07-17-2013 07:43 AM

I don't think the retractable retrievers will reach a lure that's 20' down? I use the lure hound on a old reel as mentioned above and 9/10 I get my cranks back.

SaltERedneck 07-17-2013 08:55 AM

sounds like a good deal... you would have to use that 90$ retriever atleast 12X to break even. the hound is like 8$.

apous 07-17-2013 09:30 AM

The retractable ones work the best. Unfortunately they won't reach deep divers😕. They are perfect for square bills and 9-10 footers. They also keep you from breaking off your rod tips. Whoever invented any retriever has their spot in heaven 😇!

All you'll need to break even is get back just half of a 10XD. ;) :smokin:

Don't know any company names. they make tons of different ones. I bought mine years ago off eBay for $7 bucks. They make some with retractable rods that extend 20 ft and some with heavy weights and rope.

jrdntboy09 07-17-2013 12:45 PM

Oops y'all have done covered that didn't read all the other comments

This is it.

RonnieF 07-17-2013 07:59 PM

When we bought the camp, the previous owner left a 20 year old lightning rod, 7' MH. I've been throwing a 10XD on that relic. They both weigh a ton. I've been throwing it on 12# CXX P Line. I keep waiting on the rod to snap while it's loaded up during a cast. I haven't caught a fish on it yet. I also use the lure retriever from Academy. That thing will pay for it self in one trip.

The hvy action and moderate taper is perfect for that big bait not allowing to much flex in the rod like lighter actions ex: fiberglass. And it is rated for lines 12-20 and lures 1/2 -3 oz. and it doubles for my RVC Rigs (a-rigs). I use 12# Sunline flouro for my cranks. And as for retrievers I use a 2oz. bass casting sinker tried to heavy nylon string by a swivel haven't lost a bait in 15 years since using it

How do I post a pic on here? I caught a Slaunch Donkey on a 10XD in Toledo this Sunday. Trying to send from my iPhone.

SaltERedneck 07-30-2013 12:12 PM

sweet! i think tapatalk app. or do like me and send it via email to a computer.

apous 08-04-2013 10:37 PM

1 Attachment(s)
Attachment 54153 7.63 caught last sunday on a 10XD in 27' of water on a ledge in Toledo bend. I was using a Castaway 7'6 Long Launcher on 12# Sunline Sniper FC with Revo winch. The set up worked perfect.

Montauk17 08-04-2013 10:41 PM

Nice!

apous 08-04-2013 10:46 PM

In 27' of water and a good 50yrd cast within 10 cranks of the Revo winch the plug was dragging bottom. I caught the fish on the 3rd cast of using the big plug. Definitely not the last time I'm going to throw it. It was fun

Montauk17 08-04-2013 10:50 PM

Did it hammer it or did it just feel heavy? Fishing a crankbait that deep is a whole new world.

apous 08-04-2013 10:57 PM

Almost pulled the rod out of my hand. But she choked it! The big hooks tore some gill plates. She died:(. I let it hit the bottom and would pause for a second or two. About the third pause that's when she hit it. I even backed off into 30' of water and the plug still reached the bottom!!! That's holding the rod at 4:00 about 2' off the water. This thing is a beast. But you do need some equipment to throw it.

Salty 08-05-2013 02:04 AM

Equipment at all you need.....patience is a must.

Nice fish.

BassAssasin 08-05-2013 07:15 AM

nice catch man!!!

apous 08-05-2013 03:54 PM

Thanks

Tygertailgater 08-07-2013 06:31 AM

I throw them on a 7'10" Duckett White Ice (Jason Quinn) MH Crank rod with a Revo Gen3 Winch. Works great!! Highly Suggest this setup. Biggest I have caught is a 3 and it just loaded up. Heard nothing but good things about them though. Also use the knock off brand retriever from Academy. Works just fine.

RonnieF 08-07-2013 08:50 AM

I caught on the 10XD for the first time this past Sunday at Toledo. I caught just over 20 lbs (5fish) between 3-5 pm, cranking a 17' flat dropping to 25'. Digging across the flat then pause/jerk over the drop off.

Dayum.... North, Mid, South Toledo??? Thats some studs!!!

RonnieF 08-07-2013 02:40 PM

I was in San Miguel. Really just got lucky, right place, right time. Plus, my buddy that came up to fish had to leave first! The fishing had sucked for me up until that point. I should be back up tomorrow night or Friday.

apous 08-25-2013 10:32 AM

I probly know where you were fishing in San Miguel. They got some studs in that cove.

RonnieF 08-25-2013 06:57 PM

For me, they've been hiding very well. I should be back up tomorrow afternoon late. I'd love to entice a few!
