directions?
Headed to Opelousas tomorrow afternoon with the wife. Never been there before. When I Googled the trip it looks like Airline Hwy is the way to go from Red Stick. Is this true, or, is there a better way? The one thing I remember about the one time on Airline is a traffic light every 88'. How far is it like that?
Also, if anyone has a good eatery....I'd appreciate it. Thanks |
Hwy 190 is definitely the best route. Whatya doing in Opelousas?
|
Take 12 to 10, cross Miss river bridge. Second exit (Lobdell), north about 5 miles to 190 west.
|
Be careful on 190,the speed limit is constantly changing and watch out for all of those little towns along there, they are always radaring.
|
So, I never get on Airline?
My wife has a vendor's meeting over there and I'm just taggin' along. Was initially scheduled for next weekend, but, got moved. Thanks for the help. |
190 is the way to go. Watch for Speed Traps.
|
Correct, never get on Airline.
Big-C is right, when you cross the Atchafalaya bridge, do NOT speed in Krotz Spings |

I got it. Do I continue on the I'state until I cross the Miss. River? Maybe I'm not following, but, I thought I exited long before that? Sorry for the ignorance. ;) |
I always cross on interstate 10. Lobdell exit is about 3-4 milws after bridge.
What kind of food are you looking for? I work at the hospital and have eaten everywhere in Opelousas |
airline is horrible. do as these guys said and exit lobdell off 10
|
mriguy, ain't lookin' for anything in particular to eat. Surf 'n' turf'll do. Any suggestions?
|
I really like Crawfish House, if yoy want Chinese both Peking and Creswell are good
|
Damded traffic is gonna be st00pid, ain't it? What's the latest I should leave? I'm prolly 2 1/2 hours from the bridge.
|
Opelousas is about an hour from BR
|
Salty yoy cant hit 190 on the Northshore and ride that all the way into Oppy? They do have a bridge across the MS on 190 im pretty sure.
|
Salty, traffic is decent going that way (west bound) till about 4:30pm then it gets STOOOPID! Anything before you'll be fine.
You can go across the New Bridge on Interstate & get off at Lobdell exit & go north to Hwy 190 or stay straight onto I110 & go across Old Bridge which is Hwy 190. |

If you got heat you might want to pack it.. Opelousas doesn't have the most "friendly"crowd... Someone didn't make this for nothing!!

Our hotel is on Creswell somethinoranother. Racetrack, casino, hotel. |
Creswell lane extension
Evangeline Downs |
Stan call me when u r passing thru BR .... I know yer old azz will prolly need a bathroom break or something!! Lol.
|
If you eat at the casino. Black berries has good food.
|
Kings truck stop on 190 between Opelousas and Port Barre has good inexpensive diner food. If you like boudin stop at Borques supermarket in Port Barre. They have the best boudin and cracklin in my opinion

Yes sir, that sounds familiar. |

I added it to the list. Thx. |
U hit airline for about 3 seconds out of Baton Rouge then take 190 bypass atchafalaya bridge. Try the pizza shack they got pretty good pizza and very cold beer.
|
190 is the best route, get on at 415. Speed traps are Livonia, krotz springs, and port barre all 3 towns are 45mph. Only other trap is pointe coupee parish which 190 is 55 mph (erwinville-krotz springs). Just pay attention and you won't have any problems. It's about an hour from 415 to Opelousas.

Is this better than going all the way thru BR to the M.R. bridge? I'm about as confusioned as a redneck can be.  |
I've ate at notya mommas around Livonia and its good. Wife is from Eunice and she said soileus is pretty good seafood.

Salty, you don't have an iPhone or GPS?

To take 190/airline through BR and cross the "old bridge" is nasty with traffic lights and car traffic. Not yo mamas in livonia has great food and huge portions... |

Stan.....I am going to disagree on the Hwy 190 route being the "Best" and I drove this road not long ago.
Yes, taking US 190 is 10 miles [just guessing] closer. But I think staying on I-10 to Lafayette and then going north on I-49 would be just about the same driving time and an easier drive. Interstate traffic can be very slow going through BR, so avoid 7-9 AM and 4-6 PM times, and hope there is not a wreck. Also.....FYI, I drove from BR to Lake Charles [7:30 to 9:30 PM] this evening. I saw Sherriff cars in 6 different places between the Atchafalaya basin bridge and Lake Charles, all watching the traffic. |

That's the way my gps routed it...thru Laffy...and that's the way my wife suggests we go. But, she ain't drivin'. This means I gotta go across that slow, long-azz bridge.  :help: Last time I went to Big Lake, it took about 3 1/2 hours to get to Laffy. That would make the trip 4 1/2 hours or so going that way. Gotta be farther than 10 miles difference? |
Katc just posted that the old bridge was closed. Not sure what direction traffic flow was restricted but you may want to check it on it before you head that way
|
Dude Stay on I-10 to Laf.. Take 1-49 to Opel. U only talking about 15 minutes from I-10. If U take old 190... Speed traps along the way..
There several good restaurants... For Lunch. RAY's.. Or "Back IN TIME" near court house... Several good restaurants at race track.. Good Buffet's for night.. |

Come on now, need to "pack heat" to go to Opelousas? Man it must suck going through life scared all the time. I agree on taking I-10 to I-49, it's only about 20 minutes from Lafayette to Opelousas. I used to eat lunch often at a place called Kelly's Meat Block. It's a combo butcher shop/plate lunch place. Good stuff. |
Thanks for the help, fellers. We're about to head out. Gonna try some of this food.
|
Might want to consider The Steamboat Warehouse in Washington for supper. One of my favorites, about 15 minutes or less north of Opelousas up I-49. Not far off interstate. Hope you can open it. Love the Gangplank... crawfish etouffee on top of a ribeye on top of a piece of homemade bread. Most entrees are $15 to $20. Great stuff!

Well, we made it there and back. Hotel was nice and the food we ate was a knockout. We ate at Steamboat Warehouse and at Blackberry's inside the casino. I can attest that the Catfish Lizzy and Steamboat Gang Plank at the Warehouse and the stuffed flounder and blackened tilapia at Blackberry's are excellent. The folks in that area were very friendly and neither of us got mugged.
