Flounder feeding????

So yesterday while fishing I came across a group of flounder that were going crazy on a school of shad. I pulled up on them and started casting away but nothing. I threw the whole tackle box at them for 20 minutes and not one single hit even with Gulp. I would not think to much of this except that this is the second time. The same thing happened earlier this month with a school of small trout feeding on shad. I have noticed that the amount of bait in the lake is tremendous but the bite is slower (at least for me) this year than it was last year. Is it possibly the fact that there is so much bait that the feeding schedule is fast and short?

I came across the same situation with school trout slashing shad at the Cameron Jetty beach. I threw all kinds of artificials (including shad look-alike rattle traps) and not a bite. I had to go cast net for some finger mullet on the river side of the jetties and put them under a popping cork to catch.

If they were feeding on shad, maybe they were pretty honed in on shad. Throw da castnet and catch some shad:)

tim3516 07-29-2013 02:25 PM

I saw the exact same on Sunday. Saw a few jump out the water busting on them shad

Clampy 07-29-2013 03:00 PM

I had that happen as well except a white gulp with just a kale hook thru the nose smashed them. Carolina rigged nose hooked gulp will work too. Just drag it in the mud. Did you try a mirodine ?

sometimes u gotta work the bait a bit faster in this situation to get them to bite...Try a silver spoon?

DeeCee 07-29-2013 05:03 PM

There are times when I can't make the bite anything. I find the shallower the water they are in, the harder it is to get them to bite. Lots of times when they stop busting bait, you can get them to eat. Also mark where they were and come back later. That being said, I seldom use live bait.

Clampy 07-29-2013 05:10 PM

I have had them do this in less than a foot of water and when they blow up the go right back in the same spot. Look for a dust cloud and drop in on his head and jig it up and down on top of him. He will get mad and eat it sometimes.

That's good info. It was a foot or less of water. Never thought about marking the spots but damn that would have been a good idea. Saw the dust cloud but I fished where I thought he might have moved to, just a few feet away. Lost my patience with them. Like OP said I tried a shad like plastic with no luck. Wish I had a castnet with me. It'd be something to film to see me try to throw it once out of the kayak. Lol

Like Clampy said, a lot of times they go right back to the same spot...some fearless fishies

getonfish 07-29-2013 06:41 PM

They were busting the water in my case as well. I tried white gulp, pink gulp and chartreuse. I even tried a mirrodine and nothing. I would have pulled out the cast net but I was to busy throwing the tackle box at them.

I forgot to mention in my original post that it was pouring down rain on me the whole time I was doing this.............

tim3516 07-29-2013 06:45 PM

If I could Have I'd have just thrown the castnet on them flounder lol. Just joking.

Nice pic,

That is the smallest Halibut I have ever seen.

BIGV 07-29-2013 07:02 PM

Been there, done that.
It's very hard to get them to bite when they are in the tiny shad/pogie mode.
Even with live shad it's not a sure thing.
I'm going to try the nose hook drop shot or Carolina rig trick next time.
Maybe with the kayak, you could sneak up on them and catch em in the landing net when they jump. HaHa!

Clampy 07-29-2013 08:46 PM

When they are like that they are reluctant to give up their position. They are primarily a ambush predator they just sit in mud and wait till the school of bait passes by and they explode up then bury right back in same spot. So you should be able to get right on top of them. I've done it in a 24' boat. So I'm sure you can get real close in a yak

Clampy 07-29-2013 08:50 PM

A drop shot with about 5-6" from weight to hook would prolly crush. I bet one of those tiny mirodines would be a flounder machine and here is one more trick. Wacky Worm smashes flounder.

Not as small as you think, those are pterodactyls flying above

Flatfishfreak 07-30-2013 04:35 AM

Encounter this quite often with flounder... All great tips given and here is another little jewel. Small white red dot beetle spin will get smashed in this situation most of the time. So bring them ultralights crappie rods with you when you go. Tons of fun also!!!

10% of the fishermen catch 90% of the fish

tim3516 07-30-2013 06:37 AM

Thank you. Never would have thought of that. Do you rip it pretty fast on top or try to hug the bottom?

getonfish 07-30-2013 08:44 AM

Really good stuff in this thread, thanks for the input. I will definitely try some of these tricks next time.

Gulp swimming mullet

Flounder seem to love the tails of gulp! I loose 2 tails for every 1 flounder i catch. Anyone else have that problem? Seems a trailer hook would fix that up.

I've put a trailer hook on my gulp when I was missing a bunch of short striking trout under some birds and it increased my catch. Trout didnt seem to mind that extra hook.
