Filet knives
I have an electric rapala filet knife and it sucks. It's like the motor doesn't move the blades fast enough to cut well.
I was wondering what knives you guys use so I can fit in with the cool kids. |
Black and Decker. I have a Mister Twister and its junk.

I use Black and Decker also.

I can work my way through a pile of gafftops or channel cats pretty fast with just the 7" Dexter fillet knife and a pair of pliers. First I make cuts scoring the skin so the pliers peel it off easily, then I take off the fillet, staying outside of the ribs and never cutting any bones. I've watched many a charter boat captain work their way through piles of specks quickly with the electric knives and overheard them talking to customers about their favorites. They really don't have favorites, they treat them as disposable, getting one season out of them in the best case, and burning through blades and motors on a regular basis. Maybe someone on here can tell you different, but as far as I can tell, a set of Dexters is a long term investment, an electric knife is not. |
Black and Decker, they were $9.99 at Walmart, I bought 4

Black & Decker or the Hamilton Beach. Both found in kitchen appliance section at Walmart

fillet knives
I've used the Black & Decker for years due to it being inexpensive, easily replaceable and during the useful lifespan..do a good job.

i have never had a problem with the old green and yellow mister twister. had one for about 7 years until i left it at the cleaning table at spicers. Got a new one that has been through about 25 reds so far

Hamilton Beach

I have a mister twister. Bigger reds I use a Rapala fillet knife. I've tried others and come back to what works for me. I couldn't imagine cleaning a ice chest full of trout with anything other than an electric knife.

Buy whatever you want it and treat it as a disposable.
Or get a cordless sawzall, put the longest blade you can on it and use that. |

I like my Hamilton Beach. I used one the "sporting knives while we were in Grand Isle this year and, it did half what my Hamilton did.

Have any of you tried the "Bubba Blade" I have seen it advertised on TV during Louisiana Sportsman TV episodes.
|
I got an "old" black and decker redfish wrecker.....Thing is a beast....Don't make them like this anymore....nice.
Paw Paw had it still new in the box and never used....I inherited and put it into service....will cut limbs.... |

Dexter (not electric)

I have the 7" bubba blade and I love it. I actually prefer it overt other electric knives. It's just as fast also, the 9" flex is amazing for redfish and IS faster than a electric.

They say to never sharpen it on an actual sharpener but just run it a few times on honing steel. I'll usually run it just before every use but I have used my father-in-laws 9" flex on 10 reds ranging 16-20"s and didn't have to sharpen it the entire time issuing it. Which was only about 8-10 minutes to clean all the fish. It is really fast and I for one will probably never use another electric again.

Bubba Blade! Always used a Rapala. For years used a Rapala, after using the Bubba Blade once last summer I won't use anything else. As smooth as an electric but better control!
