Teal Sightings

Anyone seeing any teal yet? I hear there are some starting to show up around Evangeline Parish.

Tete Dur 08-06-2013 01:52 PM

My buddy said they can't fit another teal in their ponds in Pecan Island.

BIG-C 08-06-2013 02:01 PM

Saw one flock with about 10 in it this morning, northern Evangeline parish.

AubreyLaHaye458 08-06-2013 02:50 PM

Just consider Evangeline Parish ready for teal season. Just like always, where there's water, there's birds.

Oops! 08-06-2013 03:11 PM

I saw a few last week at our camp south of Kaplan.

But do you have enough food n water to keep them there for a month n change. Personally I'd rather see them a week before so that u know they gonna be there cuz dey DEFINATELY not gonna eat the whole 100ac n a week. That's the best scenario and it happened last yr.... No teal in gc as of last of this weekend

Have never been short of food or water in the past. No reason for that to change this year, not to mention the 250 acres of rice that is about to be cut.

Same here, it works out really good because alot of the fields around us are still drained down for harvesting. Besides the fields that are already flooded back for second crop. We have some of the only water around.

It seems that area North of 1-10 has done very well for teal the past several years. However, duck season is completely different.

I hunt South of Kaplan and the past 3-4 years out teal has been great for one week and slows down a lot the next. My duck season has been good.

Glad to hear reports that some are already down!

Where in PI? I'm down close to Rockefeller. Anyone seeing anything in that area? We usually do OK for teal, not like rice field hunting for sure. We make it up during the duck season. I'm hoping we can get some food lagniappe teal hunting this year.

My buddy has family land near the harbor. Saw a handful of mottled ducks but no teal. We were there mid day checking on millet.Attachment 54250

No, but not far at all from Christian though. Some of the property is down Dennis road, and the rest is on the other side of 35.

Used to have a blind in that area for one season about 9 years ago from Neal "Crook" Landry. I think we killed 5 teal all season. It was a joke. There were some productive blinds he showed me. Then he sticks me in a blind I haven't seen anyone hunt since I leased from him, instead of just being a decent guy and telling me he leased all his good ones. He figured he would just take our money. We were young and dumb. You can see it from 35. I drive by it on my way to PI.

Luckily I had a place along the MS river I was hammering ducks that year so I didn't go for a few weeks. Show up to hunt one morning and my pond is full of crawfish traps. He said, "Man I figured you just quit hunting."

He has all the property surrounding us. The guys he leases to behind us look like they dove hunting the way they line people up on the levee during teal season.

We still do good for teal. All that pressure for big duck drives the birds out of the area. It's not just them though way too many people hunting the area.

all star rod 08-07-2013 11:40 AM

Marsh89 if you are near 699, 700 or Dennis rd you are north of kaplan...correct?

Exactly, where those geese hang out are about a 1/2 mile to the north of us. It's my understanding that property is no longer a refuge though.

I think that is correct but I never see anyone hunting it.

They still stay thick in there for sure. My dad just picked up some property adjacent to there. I think we should well there.

I used to hunt the blind on 699 past Leroy. Used to smack teal. My grandpaw used to hunt adjacent to the old refuge. They called it the airstrip. Seth abshire used to farm it. My grandparents used to own Cajun seafood on verot and he would supply them with crawfish and let my gpaw hunt there in the back. Used to do very well as a kid on big ducks. Now, well a few yrs ago when I hunted it before Seth lost it. We killed teal but no big ducks to speak of. Geese were really good in second split. Had to put 200 decoys out everyday though and hunt levy

A guy I worked with owns that refuge. That little house is his grandmothers house. She passed away a few years ago. They are putting it back into a refuge. It works on 7 year cycles. Should be back this year or next.

I can't decide whether that is a good thing or not. It's sometimes hard to pull birds off once they started piling up in that field. They can see that big flock for miles.

Chip Landry 08-07-2013 02:36 PM

Wether it's a refuge or not there is a sign at the road in front the house that says "NO HUNTING SO DON'T ASK"..

My grandparents live off of W. Liberty Farm Rd and we do okay for teal.. Nobody farms that much around us anymore so we get the birds that's already shot at..

Threadjacked:
I think those refuges are a great thing. At the minimum they keep birds in the area. If we didn't have the refuge the birds would be shot out of the area and the hunting would be even more sporadic than it is.

The guy that set up the Vincent refuge is working on setting some more up and I can't see that as a bad thing as much pressure as their is.

Oops! 08-07-2013 04:35 PM

Sorry. Wasn't trying to start thread jack anything. Just trying to give insight

specktator 08-07-2013 05:58 PM

That blind I had was about a half mile south from the refuge and they would fly over us all morning just out of range and pile in that refuge every morning.

YEP, when for example if you have 100-200 decoys it is very hard to compete with several hundred or thousand REAL BIRDS....

Unless you know how to BOUNCE DA HEN.....:p

BGizzle I think we talked about being close in Grand Chenier, whens the last time you were out there/seen birds? I've been trying to make it out for the past couple months but haven't had the chance. Last time I went there was still a bunch of birds. May try to pass through there if I head to Lafayette this weekend.

I went last week to check on millet and see if the marsh we sprayed died so we can plant jap to be ready for big ducks. We were there at the hottest part of the day didn't see much for ducks but everything is fresh and food is plentiful so all signs point in the right direction. We gonna go back for dove opener to hunt n move blinds. That whole area from PI to gc is chock full of doves. Big ones too. Year before last was plentiful but last yr was scarce. This first yr things seem to be on right track. Of I could get the owner out there more I think we would murk. We got rest ponds with food etc... For first time too. Last yr when water got high we laid hamma. First time we ever killed mallards out there since his granpa did back in the gap. Not far from booths as the crow flies.

Seen a handful of mallards in teal season but not many for big duck season, this is south of hwy 82, theres land I can prolly hunt north of the hwy that I'm hoping will hold some mallards, gonna give that a shot this year maybe try to get some geese there too.

That's what has me worried about that new property across the street from it. We gonna be able to see em on the ground the refuge is so close.

Re: The Refuge Off Of 35 North of Kaplan

That area (The Refuge Off Of 35 North of Kaplan) is in what is know as the WRAP federal program. It stands for Waterfowl Rest Area Program. They started it last year and it must remain that way for a certain period of time (Not sure if it's 7 years or not). If you drive around to the shell road that connects Gladu Rd. to Dulva Rd. you can see the WRAP signs. I had a blind in that area, the hunting was spotty, however the bird watching was and is spectacular!!!
