Proper way to set anchor
What is the best way to set the anchor, I have trouble setting it in oyster bottom/reef.
Throw that SOB as far as you can
(unless in Big Lake, just drop in water with a 4ft chain) |
What type anchor are you using?
You need to use a Danforth with 4ft of chain and let it out farther.
Danforth, I would cut the engine off and go to the front of the boat drop the anchor and let some line out and hopefully it would catch the mud or something. Maybe it is time to invest in a pole pole.
Make sure you have the chain.
Defiantly need a chain.
Do you have a chain? If not you should get one....

This Too!!

The chain is the thicket! If you have problems with 4ft, then do 6ft of heavy link chain!
This is usually need in deep moving water! Enough rope needs to be released also, you can't pull strait up or it will pull every time! And last but no least, if you do or attempt the OLYMPIC ANCHOR TOSS of the bow of your boat then be prepared for a good ole fashion a$$ woopin or the figure 8 fairy to inflict multiple zigzags around your fishing party! Seeing how far or high yo can throw the anchor does not help it hold any better, in fact it scares fish and attracts more a$$ holes! |

Just noo OLYMPIC ANCHOR TOSS! |
So how much do those Power pole go for with install?
1500-2400 depending on model!
It may surprise you how much line you need to let out. Rule of thumb is 7 foot of rope for every 1 foot of water depth plus the height of your bow above the waterline. So if you are in 6 ft of water and your bow is 2 ft high then you need to let out at least 8 x 7 = 56 ft of line.
Think about the times that due to wind, current and/or bottom conditions no matter how many attempts you made to set anchor...none were successful. Enter the PowerPole! No muss, no fuss, silent and is even a remote control operation.
So you need chain?

Yeh, it makes the anchor lay down. |

PP is great, but doesn't always hold on a reef when water is moving and it's rough. Plus, it swings your stern into the waves which is loud and not as comfortable as putting the bow into the waves.
Powerpole doesn't fit every situation |
claw

The claw anchor works easy. just set it down and it grabs on just about anything mud shell sand and reef. Got to use some chain
So what I've gathered here is that you need a chain and a power pole works on asphalt.

Danforth type is not the best for oyster beds. get a mitey mite/ grappler type for reefs. For non reef locations, I use a 7 lb Fortress with 5ish feet of chain. I noticed this past week end that in deeper water with current that I had to let out twice as much line for it to catch. once caught I would pull in some to have us where we needed to be.
A claw anchor is a must for the reefs. There is nothing better
Rustyb hit the nail on the head, get a claw anchor and your problems will be solved. they are fairly cheap too. make sure to use a chain as well.
Okay Boys ran out to marsh island today, and made sure I had couple ft of chain on the anchor and it worked great. If I can find a good deal on a power pole I would jump on it, seen like it would be much cleaner.
