Hard to steer to the left

I have a 250 sea chaser bay boat with a 250 suzuki. It is very hard to turn to the left. Turns real easy to the right. I guess it has something to do with engine torque. It has a 3 blade suzuki prop, jack plate and trim tabs. I have to be going about 40mph before it gets easier. At 40mph you aint turning much. I am told by some people that a 4 blade prop would make it easier to turn? Jusy need some ideas. It has hyd. steering.
What about the little trim fin on the cavitation plate of the motor?

You sure it's not a steering problem?

CajunChristian 08-07-2013 03:36 PM

The torque created by the direction of rotation of the propeller makes it harder to turn left. That is why the motor always pulls to the right if unattended.

What stearing system do you have?

Matt G 08-07-2013 03:48 PM

You have to stand on my steering wheel to make my boat turn left when running on plane. It was like that with the 3 blade and still the same with the 4.

So I guess there is no fix?

Moody 08-07-2013 04:02 PM

Have you tried turning the trim tab anode to the right ?

latravcha 08-07-2013 04:03 PM

I have a 250 yama and with a sea star and have no problem turning either was. I know suzukis have a lower ratio lower unit and a diffrent type of prop may be the issue.

rustyb 08-07-2013 04:05 PM

No not yet. I wasnt sure if that would help. Would that make it turn left better? I thought it stopped it from pulling, if u let the wheel go. Mine tracks straight.

I think you are right. Lower gears and a 16 inch prop where as the yamaha has a 15. I guess that could make a diff.

Montauk17 08-07-2013 05:07 PM

Install it and and turn your tab on the motor to the right a few degrees it should eliminate most of the torque.

My podna has a heavy 19' robalo that had the same problem and it fixed it.

rustyb 08-07-2013 05:25 PM

All the reviews I read seemed to do exactly what I need.

Montauk17 08-07-2013 05:27 PM

TH marine makes some good stuff....their g force trolling motor handle with cable da bomb. No more snapped ropes.

BROWN FIN 08-07-2013 05:45 PM

You sure you don't have air in your system?

Yes I had it checked. It has no play in it. It is solid.

BROWN FIN 08-07-2013 06:15 PM

You have the sea star 1 or 2?

rustyb 08-07-2013 06:17 PM

How can I tell?

express5 08-07-2013 06:33 PM

you might wanna check if your motor is exactly vertical, that will make a world of difference.

Doesnt say. It just says sea star

alphaman 08-07-2013 07:17 PM

I have a suzuki 175 and it is pretty stiff when turning either way. Though I was a problem but I was told that's how it should be.

Did you try to bleed air while turning the helm at the ram?

You should be able to turn it with your pinky wide open. I have twin 175's on one boat that I replaced all steering (2 pumps, ram and lines) and can turn doing 50 with my pinky. It takes a lot of time and patients to get every last bubble out of the system.

rustyb 08-07-2013 07:50 PM

I had a cat with twins that I sold last year. You could turn it with a finger but I think its because they were counter rotating engines. According to my mechanic I have no air in the system.

All the NASCAR drivers complain about it not turning left good on Sundays.
They always change four tires and top off the gas. Maybe a round or two down on the track bar. Hope this helps! Boogity Boogity!

rustyb 08-13-2013 08:25 PM

I painted it and It looks good enough for me. It took all of 15 minutes to do. What an easy fix. O yeah and it cost 15 bucks. Took a couple of days to come In.

Montauk17 08-13-2013 08:26 PM

Good deal...makes it much nicer like I mentioned my buddy's boat did the same thing and it fixed the problem.
