Kids in the blind with you? How old?

I plan to bring Huey with me in the morning. My Wife is giving me grief about it. He is 5.

How old were you? Or how old were your kids when you brought them for the first time?

Micah 09-19-2013 09:04 AM

5 is the age that I'll most likely bring my son.

MarshRat89 09-19-2013 09:05 AM

I was probably right around there. Now would be the time of the year. Later on it will be too cold. Hell I have pictures of me riding on a horse with my dad working cattle when I was 4.

goldenrod 09-19-2013 09:15 AM

Perfect age, bring him a BB gun and let him shot at decoys.

Bson 09-19-2013 09:37 AM

I brought mine when he was 2 under very controlled conditions. 5 is fine, just bring plenty of snacks and drinks to keep him busy.

BassAssasin 09-19-2013 09:41 AM

killed 2 deer with my daughter in the deerstand with me last year. She was 4 at the time. Go for it

Micah 09-19-2013 09:54 AM

To me it has a lot to do with the conditions of the hunt. If it's a easy boat/4wheeler ride or not is what makes the difference.

midwestorig 09-19-2013 09:57 AM

I was six when My old man brought me out the first time. Controlled Circumstances. Bring a game and some snacks!

T-TOP 09-19-2013 10:06 AM

Wish my phone would load pics! I started my son around 5 or 6. But for the past few years we have been packing all my buddies little ones to the blind.... 5,6,7,8 bunch a little duck hunters!

yea an iphone with several games and snacks is super clutch

Josh C 09-19-2013 10:57 AM

Mine has been fishing and hunting since he was 2. He is if 4 now and can shoot the BB gun with the best of them!! Look out decoys this year!!

Finfeatherfur 09-19-2013 11:03 AM

Biggest advice I can give you ***** DO NOT BUY THE KID RUBBER BOOTS**** when it gets cold.

Find some good boots that will keep his feet warm and dry when cold weather gets here because my kids taught me quick - if their feet are cold, I am not going to have a good hunt!!!!

5 is the perfect age for a BB gun in the blind, however if you take him against her will like I took Lil-c fishing saltwater against my wifes will there may be cosequences as there were in my case,Good Luck.

So what did you have to do in order to make that up to Momma C?

Made Lil-c tell her how much he enjoytd and took her out to her fav restaurant, that type of stuff then it was all good in a few days.

Dink 09-19-2013 12:09 PM

Its a very controlled hunt. 100yd walk from the truck. No water except what were hunting over. And only Him Me and my Brother. Plus a weekday, so shouldnt be another hunter for a few miles.

swamp snorkler 09-19-2013 12:23 PM

Make sure if you let him it's just him shooting and give him specific diretions to shoot.

Also, me and 2 of buddies and his daughter who was about 8 or 9ish at the time were making an afternoon Teal hunt. When we came out of the blind Green Jeans was in the canal waiting for us to get out. He checked us for our limits and we had 4 limits.. He asked my buddy who was in another blind with his daughter who shot the 4th limit and he said his daughter did. He told her to pick up the gun and load it, point it at the bank and shoot. She picked it up, loaded it and was about to shoot and he told her to stop she didn't need to shoot. He told us if she would not have been able to laod the gun then whe would have got a ticket for being over the limit. What I'm saying is, if you shoot 3 limits.... make sure he can load and shoot a gun.

Goooh 09-19-2013 02:54 PM

Just put heating protection on them. I have permanent damage from a .45 colt that happened as an adult, the youngsters are more prone. My ear doc told me you wouldn't believe how many kids in the 5-10 yr range go in with permanent damage/loss and a ringing in there ear that will last a lifetime.

I'm stuck with it... I've tried everything now for the ringing and have had no relief.

They may not look cool, but at least you can live everyday without them, unlike a hearing aid before you're 30!

nice tip, thanks

jchief 09-19-2013 05:18 PM

What did he say????

In all seriousness, make sure he has hearing protection.I am paying for it now. Just had a hearing aid upgrade and there is not much more they can do. Mine is from sirens and guns

My first trip to the blind, I was 6 years old with a 410/22 over/under. I remember shooting 1 duck that day on the water in the decoys. Greenhead.

MarshRat89 09-19-2013 05:23 PM

Same here, only 25 and can't hear worth a crap.

hankscke123 09-19-2013 07:35 PM

had my grandson shot first teal at 5 with 410 and this year he is ready to do agian also bring bb gun to keep busy.

biggun 09-19-2013 07:50 PM

5 is a good age to start..

Both my sons had BB guns.. I instilled in them gun safety and had them handling their BB guns just like they're shotguns from the very beginning..

Dink 09-19-2013 08:54 PM

He's in bed and all ready to go. He laid out his clothes and packed his red ryder in a gun case so his would be like mine. Got his face cover and ear muffe packed. Not sure who is more excited, him or me

3FLa 09-20-2013 08:48 AM

This very short post may be the best ever on this site. Please share the outcome of this hunt.

swamp snorkler 09-20-2013 09:22 AM

Awesome Dink...... Hueys going to remeber it for a long time.

grizzon30s 09-20-2013 09:24 AM

Mine has been coming since he was 4. It was easy rice field hunts at the time and I always made sure to take him on nice easy conditions. Didn't want him to be uncomfortable at all. He'd pop the decoys with his red Ryder in between flights. Got his 410 at age six or so. He's now 12 and been shooting a 20 pump for 3 years. He's a trooper, he actually has less trouble walking through the marsh now than I do.

Off the tit and in the pit! :D

mailreg 09-20-2013 04:02 PM

That would be illegal. No air guns on duck hunt.

Dink 09-20-2013 07:07 PM

Want my address to bring the ticket to?

People like you piss me off. I'd gladly take the ticket to spend that time with my son. In fact, ill give you my schedule and you can write me one every day that I'm there. Just be ready for what I give you in return......

Wanna come on a forum and rain on a kids parade.......what a faggot

homerun 09-20-2013 07:28 PM

Dont worry about him dink. Sounds like he a duck in a bad position. Keep up the good work as a good dad.

homerun 09-20-2013 07:37 PM

If you take them when they are young . They will take YOU when you are old.

Its not an air gun. Its a spring loaded bb gun. Do us a favor and hold your breath...forever.

AubreyLaHaye458 09-20-2013 10:46 PM

I didn't know red riders qualified as air guns anyway?

Got the chills reading this! I remember my first hunt like it was yesterday eventhough it was 20 yrs ago. I still remember exactly what the duck looked like when it was at the end of the barrel sitting in the decoys! So much more great things I remember in such detail but I won't digress. Good luck, and safety first!

Dink.......Clayton has been going since he was six........His birthday usually falls on the youth hunt weekend ......November the 6th.........

My wife gave me a picture book from shutterfly with all his youth hunts from the first to the last......which was last year......

I am getting choked just writing this......

He is now soon to be 17, working and going to school, already thinking about which college. Our hunting days together are getting less because of all his endeavors.

But those years...........well let's just say, they forged a great young man to be around.

You my friend are starting something so important to our society and our culture.

Thanks.........

From one dad to another.

I started with my son at 4 with fishing close by in the Basin. He showed potential with being patient and we slowly expand from there. Longer saltwater trips then to the WMA for some squirrels as the year progressed.
This year I went out and got into a lease; first time in 8 yrs with the intent ro introduce duck hunting. Like most others very controlled conditions, short walk to blinds, snacks and something to keep him busy.

So far its been a great success. He looks forward to it so much that I get the best behaved boy all week, knowing his reward will be a weekend hunt.

One other point; it really helps if you're in a lease with kid friendly members. Growing up hunting young I can speak to some negative experiences that I'll be certain my kids aren't subjected too.

We also started gun safety at home. Showed my wife what we were learning and that he was capable of comprehending the dangers. She has since felt alot more comfortable.

My 2 cents.

More like a nickel's worth! Great points

MathGeek 09-21-2013 08:43 PM

I took my children deer hunting with me from the very youngest ages and had them squeeze the trigger while I held the gun to my shoulder. We killed a number of deer this way, with my children (as young as 3) squeezing the trigger on successful deer kills. They were killing deer, shouldering the guns themselves, by age 9 or so, as well as effectively using a crossbow for successful kills.

Safety and comfort are the key to both hunting and fishing with children. Early success is also important.

My daughter (15) is now an excellent rifle shot, regularly competing well (and occasionally winning) long range rifle contests and bench rest. She's also acquired an NRA Junior Instructor certification in Basic Pistol.
