NFR

Don't know how many keep up with rodeo, but Casey Martin, steer
dogging, and Shane Hanchey, calf roping, are competing in Las Vega at the national finals rodeo. They are either 1 or 2 in the world and both are from Sulphur.

Louisiana boys know how to cowboy up.
Havent been following it but GOOD LUCK to them.

SaltERedneck 12-08-2013 10:52 AM

Casey got 4th on day 1 and 2... hoping he does a lil better.

jchief 12-08-2013 11:59 AM

Casey and Shane tied for 2nd last night. They are both leading in the world in their events if I am not mistaken.

cajunforeman 12-08-2013 01:27 PM

Tuff is still leading the world in the tie down roping but only by 30k. This isn't much worn each round is paying just over 18k and the average will pay over 40k. Casey will have to stay very strong in the rounds and let the average take care of itself. Casey and Shane both represent the state really well along with Randall Carlisle. Randall is actually riding a horse that belongs to jade Conner who lives right down the road from me. These guys are tuff, many of these guys are hurt but continue to compete unlike the rest of our pro sports.

jchief 12-08-2013 01:39 PM

Also noticed there is a guy in the bull riding from Elm Grove, I believe, Louisiana last night.

cajunforeman 12-08-2013 01:47 PM

Heith demos in the saddle Bronc is also from Heflin la.

I think Shane got a no time in the 3rd round and believe hes sitting 3rd in the world now and Tuf still leading.

jchief 12-08-2013 02:11 PM

Here is an up to date standings

This is wrong....Shane won 2nd in the round last night and Cody Ohl won it. Shane is also winning the average and sitting 2nd in the world standings behind Tuff. Big shout out to some great guys representing our state in a great way!!!

jchief 12-08-2013 02:13 PM

Shane came in 2 last night and is currently 2 in the world.

And Casey is 1 in the world.

cajunforeman 12-08-2013 02:18 PM

Shane was 6.9 last night and placed 2 to Cody ohl who was 6.7. Not really sure why Cody demoss didn't make it this year. I'm sure he just stayed close to home this year. He rides really well and usually consistently in the top 15.

You are right about "Hot Sauce" DeMoss, can sling some iron and is always in the top 15. Came really close several times to holding that gold buckle. He is also married to a girl from Holmwood area.

cajunforeman 12-08-2013 02:39 PM

I know him and Margie got married not long after they got out of high school. I think they still together but not sure. It's funny to see all these guys doing so well. Cody team ropes really well and Casey use to ride broncs. It was always fun to watch him rode with him being so y'all.

Goose 12-08-2013 02:48 PM

Cajunforeman-we most likely know each other. Used to rodeo with all these hands and stay in touch with Shane on a weekly basis. His older brother, Jason, and I are good friends....Jason trained the horse Shane is riding "Reata," and is one hell of a horseman. Also good friends with the Martin tribe. Did you used to rodeo?

cajunforeman 12-08-2013 03:11 PM

Yea, Shane was a little younger. I graduated in 99 but rode high school with Cody and Casey. I left LA and went to a Juco in Borger Texas then to alva Oklahoma to rodeo. I'm pretty sure we know each other.

Andy C 12-08-2013 05:47 PM

I rodeoed with Martin at mcneese, but we kinda lost touch after college.

Yes, I actually got chance that scholarship.

cajunforeman 12-08-2013 06:51 PM

We roomed together up there and had a blast in such a small town.

Raymond 12-08-2013 07:20 PM

Brent, what's a better than avg roping horse cost and what's it cost to keepem annually? How long can they be competitive with the schedule?

EXPENSIVE

Go buy a barrel horse. OMG $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

cajunforeman 12-08-2013 07:50 PM

Some of the horses that are at the NFR right will go anywhere from 50-100k. The horse that Cody ohl is riding there(Pearl) is one of the best I've ever seen. You can get a pretty decent one around here for 10-15k that good for a high school kid and some amateur shows. Web you compete on that level it's a whole nother story. I've seen some of them last 10 years if well taken care of. I believe Shane's horse that he's on now has lasted a good while but he gets the best of the best treatment. Vet bills, injections, shoes, grain and hay all add up fast. When I quit diesel was 2.90 a gallon. I can't imagine their fuel bill a month goin full time. Not to mention the $100,000 rigs they drive. There is no way these guys make it unless they have great sponsor.

jchief 12-08-2013 07:54 PM

Buddy of mine used to rodeo a lot and his girlfriend did too. He team roped and she did barrels. If I member correctly, the last horse she bought was about $240,000.

A lot of the guy's that I know that used to travel to ropings around the southern states have gave it up for the reason Cody said. Travel cost.

How long does it take to get a candidate to the point they can compete? Do they remember you when the training is done? Are they a horse or robot in the arena?

Raymond 12-08-2013 08:02 PM

Lol, I knew this was where you were going. Id say very samilar to dogs. A 6 month minimum in the pratice pen before they seen a rodeo. Some progressed fast others were slower. Just like any other animal if they love it they can do both. Enjoy being in the pen and enjoy just being a horse. I always thought of mine as a partner. If you watch Shane rope you can tell how much he loves that horse and he knows he wouldn't be near as successful without him.

MarshRat89 12-08-2013 08:09 PM

It's not uncommon to see 1d barrel horses going for 50k though

Yes, I was talking about the horses at the NFR. You can get by with a lot cheaper if you not riding pro. I never had those caliper of horses. Mine was more on the 15 to 20 level with a much smaller trailer. I was blessed enough to have have full rides scholarships for college and great parents to support me going down the road. Trust me its not cheap but neither is robot dogs and duck hunting.

How much per month? I just might get me some Shetlands and trainem to be ropin horses. They have a midget cowboy rodeo association?

cajunforeman 12-08-2013 08:19 PM

Lol, u gonna have out hands full with those mean little suckers. I'd say easy $300-350 a month to maintain a horse that you rope on.

Just like dogs, they start about what charge month then go up from there. I'd say a decent one will charge $750 but you bring the feed. We never really used a program just did what Dad said. That's why my hard headed butt took me so long to buy mikes DVDs. I always thought I could just see someone do it with dogs and then Id make my own decisions from there but boy was I wrong. Lol

Raymond 12-08-2013 08:43 PM

What's a good Shetland pedigree look like???

cajunforeman 12-08-2013 08:47 PM

Lmao, don't know never seen one. If u find one with doc bar, pudden head and maybe a little peppy sand badger helm that sucker up and ill go in half with you.

Mitch Martin is one proud papa right now... I like how the commentator said something about Casey having his own little "herd" down in Sulphur!! LOL. When they come over to the house they arrive in a commercial caravan LOL.

jchief 12-09-2013 07:36 PM

They just bought a Nissan van right?
