Hwy 27 Beach Restoration

Anyone have an inside scoop on it? That's where we like to fish and each trip the dozers are a little closer. I understand that it is a much needed project to protect the highway. From what we've read they are restoring the beach out to 285 feet from the hwy. Anyone know anything else? Still gona be public accessible etc? Gona ruin the fishing for a while?
I know there are plenty of other great beaches to fish but when you have a spot you can count on you hate having to change. Either way it will be what it will be and if we have to we'll find reds in the surf somewhere else.

duckman1911 01-02-2014 09:09 PM

No, it's south of Creole/Oak Grove. About the same distance from Cameron but to the east. You go south from Lake Charles instead of Sulphur.

Roger that. I figure we have two months/two trips max before we have to do something new. If it still public access we'll just roll back to where they started and try there. I figure if we can fish there the three month delay will have things back to normal. I may be wrong though.

Rutherford beach has some good fishing, is less crowded and deeper water then where you are fishing now. You should give it a try sometime. Really!

fishhawk 01-09-2014 11:28 AM

x2 on rutherford, havefished it several times and not seen a soul!

BuckingFastard 01-09-2014 11:34 AM

i fish both, still prefer the area towards holly. rutherford is good too though!

BassYakR 01-09-2014 12:09 PM

i have also fished both... The beaches are much nicer towards holly but ive caught alottttt more fish near rutherford.... Not trouth tho... the water dont clear up much at rutherford

duckman1911 01-09-2014 01:16 PM

Gona fish the hwy 27 beach on the 25th if the weather is decent. Will probably check out rutherford the following trip. We try to make a trip once a month if schedules allow.

The project will cover about 5 miles of beach, West of the west jetty. See link:

well there goes vehicle acess

MathGeek 01-17-2014 07:58 AM

I'm not so sure they'll limit vehicle access. I drove out there twice within the past week and parked next to the big pipe. Other people fishing did the same, and several others parked in the sand closer to the road. We were out there for four hours each time and both police and several project hours passed during that time. No grief.

From the link describing the project, the big pipe is for moving the sand, so I expect it will be removed once the work is completed, allowing vehicle access closer to the water. The project seems to be close to completion as the length of new sand is now close to the file mile target mentioned in the article.

fishhawk 01-29-2014 11:13 AM

fingers crossed

duckman1911 01-29-2014 12:59 PM

I was gona fish there when we went last weekend but the entire stretch was barricaded off. I guess they got tired of seing MG catching all the reds :)

Beach will be off limits to all motor vehicles after they restore it, you can bank on that.

kibb 01-29-2014 04:43 PM

I was thinking about taking my new ride out there to do a lil fishing in the near future.

buddybeagle 02-09-2014 12:27 PM

how far down the beach do y'all go at Rutherford?

tojoe 02-10-2014 10:27 AM

Just to let you know, they are finished pumping the sand, or will be in the next week. After that it will take a couple of months to pick up all the pipe.
I have a relative who is working that job. Now I don't know if it will be off limits or anything.

Catch one for me.

I pass by it every day, as of yesterday afternoon all their personnel and equipment were still out there on the beach and it looked as if they were just starting to break down the piping.

fishhawk 02-14-2014 10:14 AM

thanx for the update purpleback!

hgwy 27 beach restoration

Is all the beach closed to vehicles? Or just east of holly beach?

MathGeek 02-20-2014 07:12 PM

There is no signage indicating beach is off limits to vehicles. It looks like they are constructing some fencing that allows pedestrian access, but not vehicles. They are leaving a 30 ft wide strip along the road that should allow parking. The fence construction looks to have started at the east end (channel) and is making the way toward the Holly Beach end.

fishhawk 02-20-2014 07:23 PM

Gotta lotta memories on that beach....late at night...in my truck....drunk!!! even fished a few times!!! lol So theyre building a parking lot where they had previously kept us from parking???? Go figure

duckman1911 03-10-2014 11:55 AM

Anyone have an update? Looking to go fishing in the next week or two. Would like to fish that beach if its open. If not i'll hit Rutherford.

I'm almost sure at least parts will be open, but I'm expecting to have to park outside of the fence within a few yards of the road and walk to the surf.

It might be kind of a pain to either have to get a special purpose battery or have to walk back to the vehicle each time to pressurize the bait cannon we're working on. It begins to be quite a haul for the ice chests also, once they are full of redfish.

The beach looks great though.

Purple Back 03-10-2014 12:51 PM

They left an area open in the fence all the way to the east side, I can see where vehicles have been traveling through it. Not sure if it is permitted but it looks like they left it wide just for vehicle entry. As of now they are no signs indicating that vehicles are not allowed.

Thanks for the update! We'll look for signs before driving on the beach. I definitely wouldn't want to get cited if there are signs to keep vehicles off the beach, but given the long history of accessing the beach in vehicles, I wouldn't feel bad about doing it if there is no barrier and no signs to the contrary.

If anyone sees signs or hears of folks being cited, we would sure appreciate an update.
