New Beach Report (BTW Holly Beach and Ship Channel)

Hit the (literally) new beach yesterday with the offspring. They've extended it about 250 feet from the HWY and it gets deep a bit faster than before. We managed 3 bull reds and 1 bull drum btw 1100 and 1500 hours on cut mullet. Not on fire, but solid, and the children had fun.

We've increased the casting distance a bit with two 12' ugly sticks and matching shimano reels with 40 lb pp.

MG , have you ever thought about using a kite to get the baits on out a ways?

Fragger 01-12-2014 07:50 PM

There supposed to be some nice phishing there per some of the natives, thanks for the report.

buddybeagle 01-12-2014 08:09 PM

how far towards holly beach have they gotten? last month they were almost half way. was that big a** pipe still on the beach? lol.

hmmm never heard of using a kite to get the bait out far...wonder how good a remote control gas powered boat would work.

MG, I must have met you at Calcasieu Point while you and the kids were cleaning those fish Saturday evening. Enjoyed meeting all of you. Keep at it.

Ive thought of doing the same thing, only how it seems your so limited by a north wind. People are doing some pretty cool stuff in NZ.

Mokau Beach Fishing With Kites Part 1 - YouTube

That looks pretty cool but seems like a line tangle cluster that I wouldnt have the patience for.

How far west are they going with the "new beach"? I know at Long Beach rd in johnson bayou the water is up to the road. A few years ago it was about 80 yrds from the road.

Thought about it, but I have a small boat (16 ft V hull aluminum), so when the N wind blows, I can usually launch the boat and get out further if need be. Surf fishing is a backup plan for when the S wind blows and keeps us out of the boat.

I wish I could be more quantitative, but the new beach has already covered most of the ground where the surf came right up to the highway between Holly Beach and the ship channel. The big pipe is still there, but there are some sand piles every 100 yards or so that make crossing it easy. You need to park on the HWY side and carry stuff about 200 feet to the surf.

Hit it again today and the children and I put 4 more big bull reds in the box on mullet. Three of them were on the 12' surf rods (Ugly Stiks), one was in closer on an 8 ft pole. No crabs today, so we fished cut mullet. It was awesome beautiful out there. Back to Baton Rouge now til Feb or March. Y'all knock 'em dead.

My children and I are now working on a design to freeze cut mullet attached to the hook in cut PVC pipe to load and launch in a potato cannon. We might get out to 200 yards.
