Semi Cleaver

I talked to Mr. Danny here and he'd mentioned Yamaha OEM black painted semi cleaver is a great prop in many applications. I'm running a 10.5 x 13p NREB and Stielleto Triad II. I read that I'd almost need to go up 2 pitches beings the props I'm running have moderate cup. So the smallest semi cleaver i can get is 10.25x14p, I'm just looking for some guys that know more about prop designs should I go with 14P or 15P?

almost all the prop manufacturers have sales service that will take your motor and boat info and give you the correct prop for your boat and be very close pitch wise. anytime you go with a new style prop you have to expect you may need to move up or down a pitch size from the standard recommendations.

tell em what you had and what you had in mind and maybe they have a better idea to get you the performance you are looking for.

14 would prolly run good on it.

CajunChristian 03-05-2014 07:10 AM

14 on a stock 50 will turn right at 5700-5800. Sprinkle a little magic dust in that motor and it will turn that 14 about 6200. When I'm done porting a 50 Tohatsu, they normally turn a 15 pitch Yamaha 6200 loaded.. Tohatsu and Yamaha are not the same port mapping.

Danny, how do these props run on a tunnel? Will I need to add some cup to it?

Yes cup will be needed for a tunnel....the cleaver has little to no cup.

I thought that they come with slight cupping? Correct? I can run my Round Ear Blades 3/4 trim 35-37 MPH at 5500-5700 RPM. With the semi cleaver I'm guessing that prop will run right once trim angle puts ventalation plate and keel parrarell? I would like to run one before i spend $360+ because every time I've asked someone about props Yamaha semi cleaver is mentioned.

VERY light cup. Not anywhere near as much cup as for a round ear prop. Semi cleavers are designed to run surfaced, so they hold extremely well in a high application, such as a tunnel. The fastest marsh tunnels I have set up run with Yamaha semi cleavers on them, they sacrifice no hole shot.

He is the daddy

Friend of mine let me borrow a 14p yamaha prop. I had 3 people 18 gallons of fuel 2 batteries and ran right around 5400rpm's. Good mid range and hole shot was pretty good also. It seems to be as fast or faster than my stiletto triad. I'm impressed to say the least.

CajunChristian 03-09-2014 07:34 AM

You might experiment with raising the motor with the Yamaha prop, 1/4" at a time. The Yamaha blade material looks thin, but, I have one that is 20 years old and is used in the marsh every year. Yamaha uses some superior stainless to build that prop. Same props we used on our inflatable raceboats in 99 and 2000. We would buy 16 pitch Yammies and have them raised to 18 pitch props.
These are inflatable tunnel boats that weigh about 125 pounds, with tiller 50's on them. We had a co-pilot to act as trim, I had a 15 year old co-pilot that was fearless. He would sit on the transom down the straights and slide to the front to set the boat to turn. All I ran was Yamaha props pitched up.

That some fast little boat!

The motors were "stock" as defined by the rules.. Mine would run mid 60's. I propped the motor for that long start, the first guy to the turn usually has the race won unless someone has 5 mph on him.

Gonna need cup on mine. Ran it today on the 18' tunnel and it slips with very little trim. Best I got was 36.8 on gps. Then try to get more trim and she'd slip

This one only got 5300 with just me in it full fuel and 2 batteries. I'm going to try to get the rpm up by raising it a little at a time. Top speed was 33.6 and any trim passed parallel with keel it wants to ventilate. But that said the overall performance is best this far I'm thinking picking it up 1/4-1/2" will get me running perfect.

CajunChristian 03-10-2014 10:36 AM

If the prop is stock, have someone put very light cup in it. Light cupping allows you to raise that semi cleaver unbelievably high.
That Yammie prop has been the best all around prop on everything we have run it on. PowerTech makes a knock off copy, it does not run as well as the original Yamaha.
The semi cleaver design is available in 14-15-16 pitch. Their 13 pitch is not the semi cleaver design.
You guys know that you can have any brand hub pushed into tht Yamaha prop. I had a Merc hub pushed into mine, have seen numerous with tohatsu/Nissan hubs in them.
It will take a bit of playing with motor height, but when you hit the sweet spot with that prop, it is nice.

The one I tried comes from a prop gu, he uses as his spare, i was surprised on how well it turns while trimmed, my round ear blades blow out if i turn as sharp as i did with Yammie prop, it's very impressive I'm going to play around with it this week and see if i can get motor height just right. Again thanks all you guys for input.

No, I took him riding once just for giggles, threw myself out of the boat jumping a big wake.
My co-pilot was a 15 year old kid named Nick Lee. He was fearless, watch him in the video, this kid was nutz!!!

D, I raised motor 1/2" yesterday i got 5600-5650 consistant and 37.7mph. The prop is best so far and i can keep trim angle same taking off or wide open only have to trim down for sharp turn, again thanks for the chat yesterday you're very knowledgeable man!
