Anyone know anything about Bad Boy lawnmowers?

1 Attachment(s)
Thinking seriously about getting me a new Bad Boy mower. I'm cutting 3 yards totaling about 3.5 acres. I'm looking at their commercial grade mowers. They are quiet expensive and they look like they are very durable & looks like they are pretty easy to work on.
I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about them or has personal experience with them?

My brother has one. It is 10x's better than my Gravely for damn sure. Rides a bit rough, but his yard is bumpy as Hell. He cuts about a 4 acre yard with it. Matter of fact he lives in Indian Bayou on Casper Rd.

kibb 03-14-2014 08:44 PM

What sizes are you comapring? What makes it better than the Gravely?

PaulMyers 03-14-2014 08:55 PM

The only real problem will be getting it serviced if you are buying from a big box store. For the most part, the dealers selling commercial mowers in the Lake Charles area only repair what they sell. for that kind of price I would only buy it from a servicing dealer.

Matt G, I have a commercial Gravely that is 9 years old and has never been in the shop. Just keep the engine oil and air filter cleaned/changed. What kind of issues have you had with yours?

bjhooper82 03-14-2014 09:04 PM

i have the badboy outlaw 54'' cut with a 31hp kawasaki and it a frickin beast to say the least. i cut a little over 2 1/2 acres and it takes me right at an hour. i looked at gravely also before i bought the badboy and they are very good also but the deck on the bad boys are a little more solid and were just more comfortable in my opinion. you really can't go wrong with either one.

cajunforeman 03-14-2014 09:23 PM

My neighbor had a gravely and just recently bought a bad boy and he claims the blades dot turn as fast. I personally have a 42in deer and paid what he paid for a 54 and I say it's worth it.

MarshRat89 03-14-2014 09:47 PM

They are some beast. I have a buddy that is a dealer in Abbeville.

Don't get me wrong.... I love my Gravely almost as much as my left big toe. I have a ZT60HD and it cuts a little over 2 acres every week and before by brother got his Bad Boy, it cut his yard too. The only issue I've had with it was the starter. It was under warranty and I haven't had any problems since. Turn the key and she's ready to roll. Before that I had a commercial Gravely with the front deck and I think that thing was older than me, and we still have it as a just in case mower. My brother has the Outlaw (I think) with the 61" cut and I just find the law mower itself to be much more comfortable. Also the cup holder is in a better spot. Sounds stupid, but it bugs me where mine is. I find the cuts to be comparable. Both of them are level and give a nice finish.

Thx Paul! I completely agree with you bud! The one in the pic is at Tractor Supply & I really had no intentions on purchasing from them for that same reason. I only wanted to compare cost & extended warranty cost. Those places do not stock the high end commercial grade mowers. I will not mind spending a little more money on a mower that will last a long time & is easy to work on.

Yes sir MarshRat! Christian is on the top of my list! The guys at Abbeville Lawnmower are OUTSTANDING!!!
Christian started servicing my Snapper Yard Cruiser a few years ago & I didn't even buy it from them. He actually has fixed things on my Snapper that was away from the factory design & I have never had a problem with it again.
That kind of service my friend is as honest as the day is long. He deserves my business!!!

What ever you buy, get one with a welded steel deck. Those stamped decks are trash.

Ztr

That's a great price compared to a comparable Kubota. Have a 27hp 60" cut, paid over 8K for 4 yrs ago. That same mower is 10,500 now.

PEACEKEEPER 03-15-2014 10:03 AM

I love my 50 in Badboy! If you get one ask about the seat upgrade! It is well worth the extra 250 bucks I paid for the seat! When I checked out I paid $5300! They also had 0% interest for so many years! I also had it narrowed down to Badboy, Gravely and Exmark.

MarshRat89 03-15-2014 10:38 AM

Anyone know anything about Bad Boy lawnmowers?

Abbeville Snapper is having an open house today if anybody wants to go check them out.

As mentioned before, pass an eye on the Kubota ZTR... I use to run a 42' gas and 60" diesel for business and they held up great plus made a awesome cut... Kubota also offers 0% on their machines

boggycreek 03-15-2014 12:14 PM

been running a 27 hp kubota diesel zero turn since 07 , havent spent a dime on it other than oil and filters. Cut 4 acres with it , best mower I have ever owned.

kibb 03-15-2014 12:54 PM

The problem with these comparisons are they look like apples to oranges. For example a 27 hp 60" from a big box is not the same mower as the same brand at a dealer. Even at a dealer there may be four or so models with the same specs, but different qualities.

Elbert Chamblee 03-15-2014 03:57 PM

bad boy

The gun club has a Commercial 60" cut bad boy and have had it about 5 years and cut with different kids driving it and has held up good. Only thing they talked about was it breaking belts when they hit something. I have a Ferris 44" w/24 B&S. Great ride and cuts pretty good. Have a 260Z w/22 Subaru Robin that I am giving the Church and it has the suspension seat but don't ride like the Ferris and the ferris cuts a little better. But in wet and muddy conditions the ferris will get stuck. That is the only complaint of the ferris line. A little shop in Iowa, La carries the Ferris line and a nice guy to deal with. :) One upgrade is to get the suspension seat on the Gravely. :) I bought the Ferris thinking it would outlast me but with 21 hours on the meter we had IKE and it went under water so I hope now for 15 years out of it.

Ed32 03-15-2014 06:02 PM

I bought a snapper pro from christian at Abbeville snapper excellent mower and dealer check it out before you buy

Repeat

I have owned two Gravelys, and can not be any more satisfied. I never operated others so I cannot comment, other than repeat what was said.

Whatever brand, get welded deck, not stamped manufac!!!!!

I work for an outdoor power equipment mfg.
Owned a shop at one time and repaired them, and now been working for a large worldwide OPE mfg for a few years.

We sell to the residential big boxes and commercial dealers.
Badboy is an ok mower made in Arkansas, idler pulley not up to a light commercial grade of other mowers in the price range.
For the money you can get a better commercial unit from a dealer that will service you.
Big problem with Bad Boy from a big box is the same issue we have getting the local dealer to service you.
If you get a Bad Boy buy from a dealer that offers service.
We are bigger so we have more of a dealer network where they don't.
They have pissed off their dealer network, and it is not as big as ours, so service has been an issue on those.

If you spend that much money buy a lot better lines (Gravely, Dixon, Hustler, Cub Cadet Z Series, Exmark, Ferris) from a commercial dealer due to they will back you up with service. Most commercial dealers that are larger have financing programs also if that is an issue.

Different mowers have their place in the market not matter what the what to be shade tree mechanic from idiot ville tells you
I been to the testing facilities, worked with R&D, and most companies but a lot into their testing to idiot proof them, quality of cut, and price point.
But Leroy the shadetree mechanic that know everything about nothing knows more than me LOL!
Each mower has its place but without service none of them are any good due to guess what they all break!

Stamped boxes gives a better cut due to air circulation and really made for subdivision lawn which has its price point & price versus quality
(Husqvarna, MTD (Troy-Bilt, yardmachine, lower end Cub Cadet, Craftsman HOP & MTD makes, John Deere D series, Ariens made by Gravely or Husqvarna)
Yes your green & yellow John Deere D series in Lowes and Home Depot just a low end model to get you to go to their dealer to buy a bigger one down the road, but it has its place. Toro in Home Depot guess what yup low end residential mower nothing wrong with that even with the KW engine it has its place.
Yup, I been to where snapper is made and guess what is it made on the same assembly line as some other brands I mentioned. Yes Massey Ferguson is made at the same plant too oh know this really throws off Leroy the shade tree mechanic!

This is a market that will take care of a lot of people with residential lawns especially if you take care of the mower.

Fabricated box on lower end level will last longer than stamped, but lose the quality of cut.
lower end commercial and light residential boxes.
Massey Ferguson lawn & garden series, snapper upper level,
Huster, Bad Boy, Cub Cadet 54" fabricated Deck, Ariens made by Gravely, Husqvarna series in Lowes & hardware store with no service dept
(This typically is not an issue when you are cutting 2 to 3 acres of field grass)

True Commercial Fabricated box will give you a balance of both, but you are looking toward 8k to 12k for that quality of cut.
Heck I can buy 2 drive shaft light commercial mowers for this.
These are for the pros and going toward diesel engines, water cooled engines, and thicker metal made for longer usage.
Dixion, Ferris, exmark, grasshopper, Cub Cadet Tank and Z, Gravely upper end,

jlsch1 03-16-2014 08:15 AM

I will give everyone advice to get more out of any outdoor power equipment.
1. 80% of returns or service calls are the carb.
- Ethanol is corrosive and within 30 days or less of sitting it will do some damage.
- How to solve this
A. Use a fuel stabilizer like Stabil or your favorite brand
B. Best way when you know you are not going to use the equipment weekly drain the tank and run the carb out of fuel.
C. Fuel solenoid which goes up and down in the carb shuts fuel off and on.
This gets stuck a lot if ethanol sits and it an easy fix.
Please don't get back yard Leroy cutting down your fuel solenoid, and put a fuel line with a fuel shutoff on your unit.
It does work, but if you forget to shut it off you get fuel dripping all over.
Good idea but you run into 1 stupid person that screws this up plus it voids your warranty.
D. Please don't ask me on lower end commercial or residential which motor is better.
Briggs has issues
Kohler is better but they had their run of some bad models not as bad as briggs
Kawasaki has issues also on their low end commercial models not as bad as briggs

Low end rider units (got to make the motors in china to keep the riders under $1,200)
Yup skippy not made to cut 5 acres. They will do it, but it just won't last due to hours this units designed for will be reached quicker.
They guy that has a little yard if he takes care of it these mowers will last due to he will never reach the hours they were built for.

Briggs made in China Not bad have a larger percentage of service than other two below but not huge like people think
(no oil filter in this price range)
Kohler made in China Not bad like others has a small percentage of bad units
( I think they do have oil filters)
Powermore made in China MTD makes not a bad engine for being out 6 years very few complaints.
(surprised me that it does have an oil filter and lasted as long as it has without a lot of issues)
It is made in a plant that Chi***** use to be made which everyone thinks is so great
I put the Chi infront due to it throws people off to what motor was made in this plant before powermore.
I been surprised about this motor also in a low end motor its a pretty good little engine.

Now remember change your oil per mfg's recommendations and filters.
Good fuel and use a stabilizer
Run engine fuel out of the engine if you sit it up.
Change your mower blades or sharpen blades

weedeater 03-16-2014 09:21 AM

I personally couldn't be given a machine with a Kohler engine, I along with several people I know had to replace these on Dixie Choppers with below 500 hrs and mine only had around 100 hrs due to them blowing head gaskets which cause damage resulting in catastrophic failure.... we have all replaced them with industrial 30+ hp engines for less money and far better warranty.... My choice would be a commercial machine with a Kawasaki engine unless I bought the Kubota then I would have the diesel or possibly their gas engine but I am not sure about the quality of the Kubota gas engine since I haven't used the newer models.

pathfinder2200 03-16-2014 09:32 AM

Boy a lot of misrepresentation here! Bottom line find a dealer that you are comfortable dealing with and runs an honest business. Dealers don't just sell brands they sell themselves. Brands come and go these days because of corporate buyouts and the like. Any local dealership keeps money in the local economy and you can always reach management not somebody in another state. There is a lot of good equipment out there these days but there is also some less desirable. Ask around word of mouth is any dealers best advertisement. And yes follow manufacturers recommendations they have lots at stake and know there equipment better than anyone.

TNP 03-16-2014 09:34 AM

Simple answer here. JD D665. 60 inch cut

If you have 6k to spend, it will eat stumps and keep going

Have to go to the JD dealer to get one. Nuf said.

I had to replace head gasket on my Kohler engine with 500 hrs. I also have a generac engine on my com. mower with 700 hrs that has had no issues at all.
Anybody else have good luck with generac

Generac is what's on alot of commercial generators, not saying that's the same motor on the mowers but they are supposed to be good engines
